Tone is slowly getting built. What I find interesting is modifications needed for making this 1941 Tone. Rear deck had ten or so holes to plug (these were for AA guns -- not well visible, these have some black marker highlighting):
Main battery is quite ready:

Been MIA a bit as the Arizona has been put on the back burner as I work on some other stuff but I had a little side project that I did that is very loosely related to the campaign so thought I'd post it for fun.
Just finished putting together F-toy's pre-painted 1:2000 scale model of a Kagero class destroyer. While this one is fictional, Kagero class ships were in the IJN order of battle for Pearl Harbor, so like I said very loosely related to the campaign
F-toy does put these little kits out in non-anime related sets but they seem to be a little less common state side in the Japanese markets I sometime stop by. They are not the most detailed kit, then again at 1:2000 it probably hard to keep a lot of detail but they are fun for a 1-2 hour diversion.

just for some size comparisons here is the Kagero next to F-toys 1:2000 scale Hiei form their Koncolle promo set of a few years ago

and here it is next to a penny

Hey everyone
Everyone has been doing some amazing work. Really inspired by your progress.
I know its been a little bit since I posted here and I know I have failed miserably in my role as oversight of this campaign but I promise to rectify that.
I have not made much progress on the Shokaku but the IJN Akigumo is moving along quickly.
here is a current shot of her progress.

I have put her to the side for now so I can focus on the Shokaku, will have some shots of her soon.

Howdy Y'all
I started my Fine Molds midget sub today. Here's the progress so far. Not many parts but the fit can be challenging.

The base is something I played around with for about a week. I found a piece of birch 1x2 lumber at Home Depot. After sanding it for a few days I've decided just to paint it. I've sprayed it with a couple of coats of Krylon rattlecan gray primer and sanded. I haven't decided if I'll paint the base flat black and the stands gray or paint both the base and stands gray.
Any suggestions from your experience?
Thanks,
Don "Lakota"

Hi Don,
Given a flat black sub, I would go with IJN (i.e., dark) gray stands on a gloss black base; that combination would complement the sub visually without competing with it.

@Tim-sounds like a good idea. I was thinking the flat, black-gray would get lost on a matt black base. The gloss will provide some nice contrast & complement.
Thank you,

Those outside pics - so Arizona. Looks like your HOA is pretty strict on choices of outside colors of your stucco. Welcome to cookie cutter houses...
Oh - nice model - what warts ?

Here are some first photos of the build. The 5 and 8in artillery pieces have been constructied and now await painting.
The smoke stack is finished construction and base paint. Now awaiting weathering, washes and dry brushing.

A lot of great work already in this campaign.

Hi Tom:
THis is coming along nicely. The guns look good as does the stack.
@ Robbie: I don't mind the stucco color, I don't have to shovel it or cut it.
Thanks for your comments about Pennsylvania.

Would it be the entire MG or just the cooling wrap and the exposed barrel?

I couldn't find any period pics in color, but these images from the movie, Tora! Tora! Tora! suggest the entire weapon would be unpainted gunmetal:

Then the entire gun will be painted except the ammo canister.

All,
Amazing work by everyone involved in this campaign. The 1/200 scale ships are truly works of art. Cant wait until I can get my hands on one.
I will have an update on the IJN Shokaku shortly.

Hi Tom:
It looks like you put the lattice yards on the forward part of the fore top instead the back side and the CXAM Platform is also facing forward instead of aft. You may want to refer to your references for the correct positioning of the lattice yards.

Lap Man,
Welcome aboard. Looking forward to seeing your build come together. Worked on one of these just yesterday, in 1/350 scale though.

I have a question for all of you (beginning, of course, with the campaign administrator):
I'm contemplating a build of the 1941 Combined Fleet flagship Nagato. So far so good... but would it be appropriate for this campaign to model the full sized mock up made for the 1970 movie, Tora! Tora! Tora!...?

It isn't the real ship, but the movie was all about the attack. So...?

Tim,
While the model you are wanting to depict was not part of the actual battle I think your concept is in the spirit of the campaign. So yes, I think this would fit in nicely.

Sal,
After a little reading (and believe me, I am no aircraft expert
)...the main difference between the PBY-5 and 5A is the landing gear. The 5's were strictly amphibious...landing gear was added to the 5A's. Most of the records point to 5's only at that time....I found from Dave's Warbirds site that "the new 5A's" showed up in Hawaii in Spet. of 42.

hi all. i am not a part of this campaign, just passing through from aeroscale.
todd i don;'t know if that is entirely accurate. i just came back from visiting my nephew who is a medical commander stationed at pearl. he brought me to an area not open to the public where the flying boat launch was.the cordoned off tarmac he showed me was a portion of the tarmac behind the hanger that had strafing bullet marks from the jap planes it. they were intermittent evidently because of where there was a flying boat parked that had been hit.if these planes did not have landing gear until 1942 they would not have been parked that far off of the water. perhaps the 5a refers to the radar dome on the top of the cockpit depicted in the box art
please disregard this if it has already been mentioned later in this post. i didn't read through the whole thing.

Joe,
I am no expert with regards to aircraft or anything else for that matter. I would assume though, and this is without research, that there was some sort of trolley that would enable the movement of the PBY-5 from the water to a hanger for the purpose of maintenance. That might explain why there were intermittent pock marks on the tarmac.
Again, I have no evidence to back this up other than all historical data showed that the difference between the PBY-5 and 5a was the integrated landing gear and that the 5a did not arrive in Pearl until 1942.
A good discussion though.
On a side note, this campaign is open to all aspects of modeling, so if there is a wingy thing that fits the bill come on over and join the campaign.

They used beaching gear. Crews would attach the beaching gear to the fuselage and the aircraft were then towed ashore, sort of like moving the old HUEY Helicopters, they put wheels on the skids and moved them. The 5A's had landing gear, the 5's didn't.
