Cracking on.

Main and secondary battery Fire Control Directors are built. They were quite the finicky little things.

Mk-37 Fire Control Directors: Kit parts replaced with 3D printed parts from Model Monkey. They look amazing, especially compared to the kit parts. Nothing more to be said about them really.



Mk-38 Main Battery Fire Control: I had intended to use more #D parts from Model Monkey since they are far superior to the kit parts however I was not able to get either of my 2 PE sets to work with them. I ended up using the kit parts which started at blank lumps of featureless plastic.

Used some spare PE to represent up the viewing/optical ports.



PE from one of the sets added to the top.



Really fiddly antenna built.



And then added to the Mk-38




Will paint these up and attach tomorrow and then its time for a short break as I will be travelling with the Mrs.

On my return I will start on the ships boats, boat cranes, catapults and plane crane.

Nice job on those fire control systems, glad you were able to work out the fit issue with the 3D part.

Directors are painted and installed. Apart from the floater baskets and weapons, the superstructure is now fully built. I also went back and did a bit more work on the SK-2 radar and make it look a bit more robust and sturdy.

Got back from my little mini vacation and got to work on the Floater baskets.

I think my biggest hate when building ships, especially the bigger WW2 vessels is the repetition of certain parts.

Today I folded 22 baskets and that's not all of them. I have almost 60, 20mm Orlikons to do and 20, 40mm bofors. It does get tedious though not as tedious as building tank tracks at least.

I hear you Rory! WW2 ships are the masters of repetition!

I thought BB's were bad, but then when I started looking into building a carrier, wow! All those planes! Egad!

Nonetheless! Exceptional work and great progress!

Midweek update time.

First up the 2 ships boats/cradles/davits. Nothing to exciting but they are now built and done.



And finally, after 2 years my Missouri starts to get her teeth.

10 x Mk-28 Dual purpose secondary batteries. Base are the Model Monkey turrets, PE from my Eduard set and the barrels from the Chinese mystery PE set. They look really good and I am almost sad to put paint on them.



My plan is to have everything painted and installed by the end of the weekend.

Hi Rory,

great work, very fine etch work with all those FC and Radars. And it's always a very special moment when the teeth come on, I normally leave that pretty much to the end - I know I'll have the motivation to build the guns, I don't know if I'd possibly omit some hatches/ladders/... if that's left to be done in the end...

Minor progress this weekend.

Not pictured but the 2 ships boats and davits are installed. I then started progress on the AA guns and let me say I am not a fan.

Started with the 20mm Orlikons. I went with the kit supplied parts as:

A: The Eduard set are finicky and I am not a fan of the 2D look of them.
B: The Eduard guns are not correct. They have them as the Tripod mounted version and my brief research shows Missouri had the solid pedestal mounts.
C: The kit parts are actually pretty darn good. Suprising amount of detail for a 1980's era plastic mold.
D: There were almost 50 of them and I wasn't in the mood to faff with all that PE.


These have subsequently been installed on the ship.

And now we come to the Devils Hump. The Quad 40mm Bofors…

Unfortuantly the kit parts are not up to snuff. Solid and nasty so I am forced to use the Eduard set. This makes use of the kit guns with 100% PE mounts. The guns from the kit are meh at best.

The first of these took me about 45 minutes. Now that I know what I am doing I was able to knock that down to about 25ish.

1st attempt is the Left side gun, 2nd attempt on the right. I need to go back and reposition the gun shield. Its sitting too low.




Lining up the 2 sets of guns so the are vaguely pointing in the same direction and at the same angle was fun.

I have done 2. I need to build 18 more of these things. I am going to try do 4 a day so hopefully built buy the end of the week.

If I could afford it I would buy some Veteran Models ones but that would come in close to $80 on its own so way out of my budget.

After these are done I will be in the final stages of the built. Catapults, planes, plane crane, Main battery and the deck level railings will be all that's left. Also need to build my base for the ship.

As easy as BB's sound, unfortunately the later in WW2 that we model them, the more the AA suite seems to multiply

Modern ships do tend to be a tad more streamlined

I have the 1980's fit out USS New Jersey. Only AA on that are the 4 Phalanx CIWS's. Will be a nice change to build. Its waaaay down on the list though. After the Missouri will be a modern DDG of some description and then a RN Battleship

ooo-intriguing... Looking forward to seeing what DDG you've got planned... Also got a modern DD in my sights for the next build...

The alternative direction of course is going backwards with BB's... Got a WW1 BB planned and there's no AA on that

Ironically most AA fit was removed pretty quickly after WW2's end

I am undecided as I have 4 options, all essentially Arleigh Burkes or their derivatives. USS Hopper (Flight I), USS Momsen (Flight II) JMSDF Myoko (Flight I equivalent) and JMSDF Atago (Flight II equivalent)

Looking excellent Rory,


Much longer production than Ranger for the light AA. The 20mm look very good, the 40's will look a lot better under a coat of paint.
