Si, there are short range defensive systems mounted on these sponsons. The various ships in the Nimitz-class have a combination of Sea Sparrow or Rolling Airframe Missile systems, as well as Vulcan Phalanx gun systems. In addition to port/starboard forward, there are also port/starboard aft, and in some cases, stern mounted systems, as well.

RN carriers seem to have given up on defensive armament, not sure what the new ones have, but the Invincible class started of with Seadart missiles and two or three phalanx, and some manual 20mm, but if I remember aright ended up with one goalkeeper and a couple of manual 20mm, not sure what the new ones have got, but it the M.O.D. runs to form they will be relying on the type 45 destroyers escorting them.

Trying my hand at dot filters to give a little variation to the monochromatic hull gray. The streaks do not look as stark in natural light as they do here.

Yesterday's progress.
Propeller shaft support issue sorted.
The etched flight deck side details / catwalk supports all in place.
The overlap on the forward and mid sections hide the joins.
Work on the side elevator supports / mechanism.
The first one built.
More soon.

Wow! That's a lot of brass! Do you use superglue or solder brass-to-brass joins?

Well I finally finished assembling the tank I have entered in the Workhorse campaign and sitting in the paint booth. So now I can spent the rest of the year on ship builds.
Rapid progress was made these last two night assembling my entry "Akagi Three Flight Deck 1/700.
Drilled out the portholes and started on the PE. and some dry fitting.
Like other builders in this campaign I am going to open of a separate build log. That's all for now.

Mark, Looking forward to your Akagi 3 flight deck because I don't think I have every seen one.
Thomas, I like the weathering you have started. it looks great.
Si, looks like some serious folding in that lot. Interestingly, I don't it something in the Infini kit for E.

My weekend's effort. A start on the foredeck. The AA is quad 1.1".
A lot more brass to go in this area yet.

I tack the parts & folds together with superglue, then run extra this gator glue along the seams, makes a much more durable join.

Hi Michael,
Looking good, very tidy etch work mate.
Pontos do like their etched 3d structures, makes using their etch real fun, but their fold lines are clearly defined and generally make it easy to use.

Well, I am going to try and contribute on this group build. I am not sure what I will end up building, but the best chance is HMS Hermes, problem is which one.

I have been watching everyone with great interest and love the build progress.
Newbie question:
I have a many Tamiya XF paint colors, but do not know which would be appropriate for the USS Lexington that I am building. I also am wondering if the Buff or Deck Tan are too lite for the flight deck timber.
I have started the Lexington slowly.

Here is my USS Ronald Reagan deck bow-on. Still have quite a few tweaks. Need to add the ordnance jettison ramps, re-do the signal flag lines (use thinner line), and a few others... Oh, and maybe add a few planes... Hopefully, will get some photos of the hangar deck with the lights on posted this weekend.

Merit 1/200 Hornet but no PE set yet..
Trumpeter 1/350 USS Hancock, Franklin no PE
Hasegawa USS Gambier Bay with no PE
Drahon 1/350 USS Independence and Princeton with one PE set for either of them.
1/350 USS Yorktwon with Pontos PE (just like yours!)
Fujimi 1/350 Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku all with DX PE Sets
Fujimi Kaga with Fujimi AND Tetra OE (Don't ask.. it is a long story..)
Merit 1/350 USS Wasp and Intrepid with no PE..
So I really don't have an excuse not to participate, but I have the 1/200 Rodney in progress at the moment.. Decisions decisions..
