Hi Thomas, I can understand why now. I figure by the time I have finished decaling I will have assembled about 1300 pieces just for the planes. It will be a while before I do another carrier.

Very true. I am thinking about how to do that as efficiently as possible. There is a minimum of 8 decals per plane, with different size insignia and lettering for each type. I am hoping a concentrated effort this weekend can get it done.

Well I reached Russ' version of insanity over the last few days! I will be seeing white stars on blue circles for some time to come.
I finished Air Group 10 for Enterprise, though somewhat diminished. Only 56 planes but 478 decals to get them to the flight deck. A collection of Wildcats, Dauntlesses and Avengers.
VF-10 F4F-4 Wildcat
VS-10 SBD-3 Dauntless
Torpedo 10 TBF-1 Avenger
And Air Group 10
Should be time to celebrate but it doesn't get better.
While I was waiting for the gloss coat to dry so I could start the decals, I built a 20mm Oerilkon to see how it would go.
Here the details
A sheet of etch - the middle section is what I need for this task
Plus bases and barrels
The combo gets you this
The downside being the trial run took me almost 30 mins. I have 49 to go, though I am sure practice will see that reduced. I will be back with progress on them, sometime!

My technique for this sort of thing, is a production line, but in batches of ten, then I don't find it so daunting.

Hello Kiwi sailor! I really enjoy your work from start to now. Having be through IJN Shokaku (with photo etch), CV6 (with Toms model work and White ensign) CVL22 with pontos deck and l'Arsenal photo etch, I sincerely take my hat of for your labor of love. Well the arsenal has kept at it with Oerlikon having rolled out another 30, batches of 10 as Si suggested. Average build time down to 20 mins per gun. Here they are in their tray awaiting the final 19.
To break up the tedium of these I built a 5inch/38 Single open mount. 8 in total are required.
The breech and barrel is an effort in itself
In a surprise move Infini have retained some of the kit pieces for this, but positively dealing with some issues. The gun base had some annoying injection marks.
but a nice tread plate fixed that
It took about 2 hours to build the initial gun
After completing another round of 20mm, I built a batch of three
The etch is clever in that the breeches are held in place by tension so you can set the barrels at any elevation you like
four more of the 5" guns to go and with the 20mm that will be the last of the build repeat jobs done.

Thanks David. If you get Enterprise will you go with the Infini set? It is an amazing collection of brass and photo-etch but it is daunting once you're into it.

I have the Pontos set for the Nagato which is also pretty daunting, a good practice preparing for the Enterprise.

I didn't know Pontos did a set for Nagato. I have that Hasegawa kit but the Flyhawk set, which I think I got off you some years back
Once E. is finished it will be a while before I attempt another one of these mega etch sets again. Next one will definitely be out of the box.

If Flyhawk would begin adding more turned brass to their kits, that is more than just the barrels, they would remain a top level maker of upgrade kits.
Right now Infini, Very Fire, and Pontos are giving Flyhawk a run for their money.

I think what would be good is for Infini etc is to get the hull znd superstructure from the kit makers and sell those as a combined kit, so you can go oob or full monty. There is so much plastic left over in this Merit kit that I don't know what to do with it.
