Now that I have my armor group builds under control I feel I am ready for another ship build.

My next build is going to the IJN Kirishima as she looked in 1942 just before she was sunk by the USS Washington during the naval battle of Guadalcanal.



Also purchased a few goodies.

I have the hull assembled and ready for painting but I been focused on outdoor projects now that is spring. Expect to have a few photos this weekend.

Well a month has passed since I first started this project. Due to work and other issues I only been able to get the hull put together and painted. I used Tamiya hull red and mix of Mission paints for the upper hull. First time using Mission paints, I really liked how well it spayed on and laid down.





Now that we are into a three day weekend and nothing planned but to relax I am hoping to spend many hours on her. Until next post.

Kirishima is looking good so far! I've always been impressed with the graceful hull likes of the Kongo class.

Outstanding work Mark.

I would ask though. Did you use Tamiya Hull Red or Dull Red? The reason I ask is that I have used the Dull Red, and my results with it are just like yours. The Hull Red seems to have more of a brownish tone.

Watching this one is going to be a lot of fun.

Thank you for the kind remarks. Chuck I used Tamiya Hull Red. It looks shiny because I have a good coat of Future to keep from scratching the paint during the build.

I fitted and glue down the main deck and dry fitted the middle and upper deck.





The next step will be painting the decks.

Are you happy with the quality if the kits parts and fit? I just bought this kit a week ago and unfortunately, it has to come from Japan as I could not find the updated version in the states. Am enjoying following your build. Keep up the good work.

I feel you pain Jon, I am anxiously awaiting a Fujimi Shimakaze from Japan as well.

Mark: Thanks for the paint answer. Don't suppose you have a Vallejo color for linoleum decks do you. I have used the Tamiya in the past, but for the Shimakaze build I would like to do the lino portion of the decks in a little lighter shade, and the Vallejo Mahogany is a little two dark.

Chuck, My reference book "Anatomy of the Ship" Battleships Yamato and Musashi the authors claims that the linoleum on Japanese ships was a yellow brown like milk chocolate with brass strips holding the linoleum in place. I purchased a bottle of Vallejo model color "Chocolate Brown" #70.872 and it looks like milk chocolate to me so I plan on using that color for the linoleum covered decking. If its dries to dark I could put a lighter coat over it depending how weathered I make the ship look.

I think the Mahogany would be to red, just my thoughts.

Thanks Mark. That should be just about right. I have little doubt that the Tamiya Linoleum was correct when first applied, but Lino fades fast when exposed to the sun.

Originally bought the Mahogany to try on pre-war carrier flight decks, but you are quite correct, there is far too much red in it for my taste.

Where are you in Texas? I visit San Antonio quite often.

I live on the north side of San Antonio 1604/281 area. I used to live in Denver from 84 to 91, Gun Club road and I70 area.

I am in Colorado Springs not far from Fort Carson. I should have said that I USED to visit SA often. I did while my daughter lived off of I-10 at Stonewall Bend out toward Boerne. Her husband was at Fort Sam Houston, and now at the Pentagon.

My grand daughter can't wait to get back to SA as soon as she finishes college next spring.

There was a nice large Hobby Town off of 410, and a tiny little shop but well stocked in Bandera, I suppose they are still there

Yes they are both there. The Hobby Town is still there but they cut way back on models in stock. More like a Hobby Lobby now. The other Hill Country Hobby must be doing good, they were at the last show in February and had a lot of business. It is such a pain to travel to their location. Haven't visit in almost a year.

There is a new line of paints out there from Scale Colors (https://scalecolors.com/). They have the entire line of IJN colors to include linoleum brown. Chuck, might be worth a look for your Shimkaze. I have all their colors but have not yet tried them.

I am also in TX, right now I am in Killeen but are moving to the Austin area here in the near future. Are you a member of the Austin Model Club?
