hi all,
a month ago i started building the 4 (available) compartments for the revell 1/72 VII/C by CMK.
Being a beginner i am experiencing a lot of stress and i discovered a product called "putty".Im no Brett Green. But im having real fun with this project and thats what counts, right?
The 4 compartments are almost ready, just finishing and washing to do.
In the meanwhile i bought a "dremel" and started cutting out to exercise and to see where the compartments should come.
I can assure you the little saw-blades CMK added are rubbish. And not everything fits well!
The size of the "hole" ive cut out for the torpedo room is already ok, but i will make no round corners.
The other 3 i will glue together (diesels-officers-commandroom) but i wont make 1 big "hole" for the 3 in the hull (what hull? :-) )
Suggestions are welcome.
To bad the other 2 arent available(electric engine and senior officers compartment)
bye
Stefan

are the pics visible?

Aye, very visible... And tempting...

Um, four compartments but three cutouts? Don't you need a hole for the wardroom?

Can we have some close-ups of the compartments, please? The detail is hard to make out, but what I can see looks very good. I'm not usually interested in warships, but this one caught my eye.

From what I have seen of those CMK capmpartments, they are good enough to be stand alone kits. Glad to see someone took up the challenge and installed them and cut up the hull Mine was 3 / 4 done before the first two kits came out last year. I installed the metal replacement deck set (Modelbrass) and wish I hadn't. It seems to flex a lot during the winter months. It is most disconcerting to see it pop up and bulge in this cold weather (It is in the coldest section of the house). When weather warms up it'll go back down flush with the hull

Verrryyyyy Nice! Yes, close up shots please and I have to echo Steve, (the other Steve) it is nice to see someone take up the challenge as you have. I think you'll have something to be proud of when the project is finished.

Well done Stefan
Steve
Wow...another Steve. They'll need to number us before long.

Careful Dave, that's how it all starts. Next thing you know you're at the hobby store prowling the naval kits and you go home with a boat instead of a tank....

ofcourse a 4th cut out will follow, duh, i mean 45$ per compartment...
i will send close ups soon, but after ive seen al those pics from 'pro's' i am a bit scared... (++)
im building this in memory of my 'grand uncle' (passed away two months ago) who was commander on such a boat. (only trainingsflottile, never did feindfahrt) see on uboatnet, Horst Heitz.
pics to follow...
kind regards
Stefan
PS building this makes you understand how 'narrow' everything was
on such a boat and think about the mortality figure...

Hi Stefan
This is great work well done.
Yes the U-Boat was a "challenging" environment to live and fight in for extended periods. Like many submarines of the era.
Those that crewed the U-Boats were a unique breed as were/all submariners. I have nothing but respect and admiration for all past and present submariners.
Regards
Sean

still to wash and put a flat coat. Hard to find reference pics in color. Saw "Das Boot" a lot!
These are two of four compartments. As you can see im a beginner, started directly with a huge project.
But maybe a more experienced builder is inspired.
To be continued...

Beginner or not, that's pretty good. When you do your wash, don't forget to weather the heck out of the rooms. With the diesel oil and other smut, they were pretty dirty. Read somewhere that there was a oily film on everything.

Hello Stefan,
That is one fine model you are putting together.
I have a link for you and all the other u-boaters,
has got to be the best collection of interior photos
of the Type VII in Laboe, Germany.
Use them as reference, they are great. The site is in
German but very easy to get around.
http://hanshansa.piranho.de/laboe/versuch2/menu.htm
Just click on an area of the u-boat and you will see the photos.
Have a nice day and happy modelling!

@Doug
I found them on ebay germany hard to find in belgium, but i think you can order them in every hobby shop (takes a few months). So on ebay they are easy to find, also canada or US.
I paid +/- 50$ per compartment So quiet an expensive project. I didnt want to wait.

Note that they also have a an upper pressure hull by yankee model works but i dont think it fits when you use these CMK compartments.

Thanks Stefan, found them in a few places but they are not easy to find!!!! I found the pressure hull from Yankee, along with alot of the PE that goes with it, too!
At about $50-$60 a compartment, it will run to quite a fortune to do them. My little model that my parents got me for Christmas may end up costing ME alot!
But my birthday is in March, and I can always cross my fingers! :-) (I'll find out how much my daughters love me when I tell them about this. )
)
P.S. You've done a pretty good job on the ones that you've got there! Also, thanks for the link. I put it on my favourites so I don't lose it!

watch it, i dont think the 4 compartments (there are only 4!) go along with the upper pressure hull!! Almost sure! They take to much place, so you'll have to build two boats!!! maybe the new revell 1/72 sub to come in februari?

Actually I believe someone has used both the compartments and the upper pressure hull together. You just have to sand down the upper pressure hull a bit. I wish I could remember who it was...
