Large-scale and U-Boat fans rejoice, there is a new submarine in the works!
Bronco has sent us a few teaser photos depicting the box art and the sail of their upcoming 1/35 German Type XXIII U-Boat Coastal Submarine (kit number: CB35104).
These ultra compact submarines were designed to patrol the shallow coastal waters surrounding Europe, and to be transported across the continent by railroad. The latter requirement partially dictated the overall compact dimensions of the hull. It was also specified that this new design use the standard 53.3cm torpedo tubes, which unfortunately limited the armament of these subs due to their very compact size. Because there was no additional room for storage of torpedoes, the hulls were designed with two forward facing torpedo tubes which had to be loaded externally by raising the bow above the water allowing a support barge or other vessel to access the tubes. The hull was intentionally streamlined and is credited with being the first submarine to utilize a fully welded single-hull design. Combined with improved battery technology powering the electric motors and a snorkel for the 6-cylinder diesel engine, the Type XXIII proved to be a very efficient and highly maneuverable vessel.
