Dragon had a previous Scharnhorst kit in the same scale that represented her as she looked in 1943. Now a new Smart Kit is coming in November that represents Scharnhorst as she appeared in 1941.
Scharnhorst and her sister, Gneisenau, operated together for much of the early portion of World War II, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping. During her first operation, Scharnhorst sank the auxiliary cruiser HMS Rawalpindi in a short engagement. Scharnhorst participated in Operation Weserübung, the German invasion of Norway. During operations off Norway, she and Gneisenau engaged the battlecruiser HMS Renown and sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious as well as her escort destroyers Acasta and Ardent. In that engagement Scharnhorst achieved one of the longest-range naval gunfire hits in history.

This new kit (No. 1036) seems to be based on the previous one (No.1040 ) but will feature:

-New upper hull moldings
-New superstructure moldings
-New Arado Ar 196 seaplane
-New Crane

The kit is comprised of inject plastic, photo-etched and DS parts and is given an MSRP in Dragon's recent flyer of $159.99 (US).

Wish they would do a Gneisenau.

What Greg said, Might be tempted though, even though I am building the '43 fit now. Cheers. Si

I'm with Greg and Si on this one, should have been the Gneisenau. I already have the 1943 version so I'll not be getting this one.

Can't see why they really bothered with this. I'm certainly going nowhere near at that price. I have the '43 version and that has its own problems. I wonder if they've sorted the hull fit and the dodgy instructions?

Some parts have been re-done (obviously) and it is claimed the hull has been fixed. Freetime has it on pre-order for $140 USD. Not much more than the original Scharnhorst.

New 3D images of the kit design have been added to this news item.
