The 'Lake' Class of US Coast Guard Cutters were built and commissioned into service in the early 1930s and carried out numerous search and rescue missions in their time, including Itasca being involved in the trans Pacific flight of Amelia Earhart and the subsequent search for her after her plane went missing. The Lake class were then transferred to the Royal Navy for use as convoy escorts after the outbreak of WW2 and became the Banff class of Sloops. At the end of the war they were returned to the USA but saw very little service before being sold.
