Making a Water Base, Step-by-Step

While your base is drying, you can use this time to make some water splashes if you want to show your ship under attack.

I started with white handled q-tips as armatures, but ideally you would want to use something clear. For the splashes on my 1/35 sturmboot, I used the clear siphon tube out of an empty glass cleaner bottle. Empty ink pen tubes work for smaller splashes.
Cut one end off of the q-tips with wire cutters. (Photo 5) Squeeze out some clear silicone caulk onto the armature, how much depends on the height of your splash. Using a small scrap of wood, begin to work the silicone around the armature. (Photo 6) The more you work it, the stiffer the silicone will get, you want this. (Photo 7)
Once the silicone stiffens up, then, from bottom to top in a sweeping motion, pull out small sections of the silicone to create movement in the splash. (Photo 8) Set them aside to dry and get ready for the next step.
Once you get your area ready for the next step, your splashes should be dry enough to continue. When they are, grab your gloss gel medium, old brush and your splashes. (Photo 9) Dip your splashes in the gel medium, swirl them around and then pull them out. (Photo 10) Take your brush and remove most of the excess medium and then set the splashes aside to dry.
