I resigned from this campaign due to time issues. But I still might do this. Working on the USS Cushing has given me a boost in the "Tin Can" arena and the time issues are easing up some, so I may join again.

Greetings, I am still in with the 1:700 Dragon USS Charles F Adams DDG-2 Premium Edition, but will not start for a bit, still finishing some stuff and battling my PT boat.

Ordered a Hold & Fold for my first foray into PE bending/use, also ordered some WEM modern navy paints, first time using those instead of MM. Debating the use of a water base, but I think its enough "firsts" for this build

Looking forward to this GB! cheers, James

I am still deciding which PE tool I am going to get. I ordered the Veteran Models items for my USS Scott. The WEM set will be next. I am goingto have to operate on the hull for the mine to make her a waterline.

Hmm, having problems with posting pics.

Here is the 1/700 HMS Liverpool so far...

I've added a couple of very tiny extra radars that show on the box and ship pics made from styrene and solder.

And the PE Radar that almost drove me nuts!

Christer,
The campaign is open to ships that were classified ad a destroyer, destroyer leader, or destroyer Escort. The Knox class was originally classed as a DL, then switched to FF, so those would be fine, However the Perry class was originally classed as PFG then changed to FFG, so those are not eligible for this build, sorry.

Thanks chaps.

James, the radar doesn't bend. It's about seven seperate pieces that have to be glued together into something 3D the size of my pinkie nail.

Much of the afternoon was spent swearing, sulking and trying to unpeel superglued PE from table, carpet, model, various fingers etc. I'll try and get some better pics.

Nice looking radar array. I built the same one for the HMS Invincible and it will try your patience.

I've finished up Resin Shipyard's 1/350 HMCS Haida-modernised Tribal class DD in her 1953 fit. The first kit available from this company (I believe) and it's very well done. Darren will cast you a waterline hull if you request-as I did. The kit is very photo etch heavy. A few changes I would make are to cast the upperworks decks with the superstructure they sit upon and make things that overhang seperate parts. This would enable a "clean pull" from the rubber mold and would eliminate the need to sand down the cast decks to scale thickness. I usually have a problem with this because when you are trying to sand the underside of the deck you have to apply even pressure and that can be a problem with splintershilding, gun tubs etc breaking. Also if there is a structure molded to the top of the deck I find that area will be sanded quicker because it's a natural pressure point. The instructions, I found, are a bit out of sequence. For instance they don't have you finishing up the deck/bulhead basic details before they get into building photo etched details that should be added later in the operation. Over all though a very nice kit.

Photo etched individual porthole eyebrows-attached with future

The base arrived so the hull is wrapped in plastic wrap while the culluclay cures

This is what a ship looks like while I'm working on it
masking tape doubled over holding it to a piece of cardboard

The hull is just set in place for this photo-it's back on the cardboard for work

That's a cracking job Mike. Really nice! The rigging looks very intricate and the paint job is very neat.

How did you make the water?

Very nice display. Ship looks great, and I like the dolphins riding the bow wave. Nice touch. Did you make them yourself?

Thanks Guys,

Yes I make my own dolphins but they always tend to be a bit big-artistic liscence I suppose? I put them in front of all my underway 1/350 ships. Made from whatever I have about-sometimes sprue sometimes a toothpick with paper or sheet plastic fins. Murdo I did an article on water a few years ago-

Making Rough Water

This artticle on the USS Duluth also discusses water

As does this one

Wake up call!!!!!

How is everyone doing on the tin cans? Mine is still in dry awaiting the lazy shipbuilder to start building her. I do have most of my AM items for her and just need to get a couple more pieces.

I hope everyone else is moving along at a good clip. I am hoping we can get some nice builds out of this campaign that we can maybe turn into some features. So crank up those torches and start cutting some metal.(I meant that figuratively.)

Oh, I waiting for it to get warmer so I can paint the darn thing. I also have a couple of 1/25 trucks in the way for the campaign here & a CBP over on another board. Good thing this goes through November!

How many James/Jims in here?

I am still some time from start, since I am about 2 months behind build schedule. Here is some info on my kit, hope I can do her justice!
My entry will be the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Charles F Adams (DDG-2); Dragon Premium kit, 1:700. Will be my first foray in the world of PE.

I may have posted this already, but here it is again.. for a review of the kit (by Kenny Loup [ GATOR ]
) see here:
https://modelshipwrights.kitmaker.net/review/2339

For a history of the ship, see here:
http://bozair.com/adamsmen/history.html

The cool link to this GB, is that the ship was part of the US blockade against Cuba during the Missile crisis:

"Following commissioning Charles F. Adams took part in recovery operations for Walter M. Schirra's Mercury 8 mission. While engaged in this operation the Cuban Missile Crisis developed and Adams moved to the Caribbean Sea as part of the quarantine forces around the Island of Cuba."

The ship was decommisioned 1992 and remains at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on Donation Hold status. She is currently scheduled to be preserved by the Adams Class Veteran's Association in Jacksonville, Florida. For a donation or information, see here:

http://www.adamsclassddgvets.org/

And here she is, hope the links works:
