Ahoy Crew !
Thanks to Jim being kind and extending the deadline, My "Tin Can" build is completed. A few pics are attached. It is the USS Richard E. Byrd, DDG-23. This was the Dragon kit of the Adams class guided missile destroyers. A fun build, hope you folks enjoy. Thanks, Guys.....Bruce

GREAT work Bruce! I am building the same (I think) Dragon kit straight as the Adams

Love the water base....

one question: I really like the paint effect on the hull (pseudo-oil canning?). I have been researching a little bit trying to figure out how to achieve that effect... did you pre-shade stripes with fl black, like aircraft? or is it pastel weathering?

Cheers and happy new year!

I started my own entry, taking advantage of the extension... full hull, which I put together, and work a bit on detailing. Will start a WIP blog once I download the pics I have been taking.

Jim,
This is really strange. If I'm signed in, I can't see your notes. If I log out, I can see them...Strange...because this was on several different computers.

At any rate, in answer to your question about the painting. It is partially accomplished with pastels, and partially with "Slight of hand" ! What you also see is a slight reflection off the water from the flash. That is because when I do a water base, I start with wrinkled aluminum foil. I then put down base coats of thinned blue and green. I next build up depth with "Modge Podge", also using lighter and lighter tones. Then the "water" is dry-brushed with white. After that comes another clear coat of MP, covered in future floor wax.

Although this procedure sounds laborious, it really isn't. I'm happy with the results, I've tried the plastic "Ready-made" sea from Plastruc, but just do not like the result. But this is probably just me.

And BTW - Thank you for the kind words on the Byrd. Take it easy........Bruce

Gents,
Thank you for the very kind words. It really was a fun project (Other than running behind schedule, that is !)
The best thing was learning more, especially about the water base. This is an on-going experiment to try to produce the most realistic water base I can ....Still have a long long way to go
Take it easy, Gang. ....................... Bruce

Alright guys, just a few more weeks left to finish up. I know that extra time helped out a bunch of us.

For those who are done already make sure to add your photos to the gallery. For those getting close, keep plugging away.

I will post some pics of my Samuel Adams later tonight or tomorrow in here or will start a separate blog. I have most of the main structure done, working on the smaller subunits and antennae/radar arrays. Doing my first PE, its addictive actually!

James,

Good to hear it. PE and I have a love/hate relatioship, I love it or I hate it. I only wish I could report decent progress on my build. But, you gotta do waht ya gotta do.

Looking forward to seeing the Adams!

James,

I hear ya when it comes to PE. If you read my blog on my USS Fletcher build you'll read that I managed to glue it just about everywhere EXCEPT where I wanted it. I really need to get off my "fouth point of contact" and finish that Sprucan!

How many "Jims" do we have in this campaign, anyway?

If anyone has a problem uploading thier images to the gallery, send them to me on my kitmaker email.

How many Jims are there in this Campaing? I don't know, but maybe we can have a site wide Jim only campaign!?!?

Ok, I started my Samuel Adams and immediately (well, after a few days) got bogged down in detailing… will have to cut out few improvements I had in mind so I can finish on time (unlike the small craft GB..). I will start a blog once I get the dig cam from the better half and dload the pics.

Okay, one down... Here's my build: 1/700 JMSDF Hatsuyuki with P-3 from Pit-Road. It has the dedicated PE that Pit-Road released for it (most of it is for the mast).

I will be setting this build up as a feature story in the near future, and also as a water tutorial- I figured this way I could get it done sooner with this rather than waiting for it with the Hiryu. So, more on this soon.

Also, can a mod please delete the pictures I uploaded directly under the main folder fore this campaign. I uploaded the pics and THEN noticed the separate folders for "Unfinished" and "Finished". Sooo, if someone would be so kind as to remove the repeats and just leave the shots under "Finished"...

Well done Dade,

Cleanly built and well painted. You managed to get past Pit Roads greatest hurdle,... their decals (I find the majority to be off register, yellow and fragile,.... but that's just me! ) The P3 is a nice touch, I'd try and take a photo directly above as to hide the base attachment rod.

thanks for sharing,

Frank

Dade,

I like it! Very cool idea with the P-3. That plane must be very small. Good work. Didn't seem to take you very long.

Thanks, guys!

Frank, I agree about those decals. I lucked out with this kit, especially amazing considering its age (even the box art is different nowadays!). Regarding the P-3 overhead, thanks to the magic of Photoshop, your wish is my command:

The feature version of this shot still has the rod in it, so you'll be able to compare to this shot when it's posted.

James, the P-3 is about 1.75" long, so there's still enough to grab. The SH-60 is another story though...

If it wasn't for the extension, I don't think I would've finished in time. It was one of those things that seemed to be all sewn up and then took longer than expected.

Nice presentation and a clean built.... Hmmm where have I seen a P-3 Orion on a dio?
Good job, and what about a MOD?

Thanks Rui! Did you also do a P-3 on a diorama? I'm sorry, I can't remember...

Yep, I sent everything over to Mark for a MOD a few minutes after I posted some pictures here.

OK, once again we push back the clock on this one. I was asked by a person who shall remain nameless to an extra week, so I added two.

BUT!!! That is all. (Did I sound mean?)

Really?? YES YES! Was not me, but could have been! I can use the extra time, was debating whether to rush the build and cut corners, or bail out of the GB and finish the build properly... I can now continue my mano-a-mano with PE and finish the build! cheers

PS Photos to follow later
