Mark, would a US WWII sub be eligible for the campaign? I intend to do it in the three-tone (dark grey, light grey, black) camo, but since there is so little of the dark grey, I wasn't sure if it would qualify as a "disruptive scheme." Jan's boat is a good example of what I intend to do.

I am going to finish my WWI ship before this one, but when thats done ... its sub-time again

I look forward to that. Your subs are always an inspiration!

Ahoy Sam!

As the rules and reg's state, my friend, "Any type any scale as long as it wore camouflage scheme - no fictional ones!", so I would say, get building, mate!

Cheers,

Thanks a lot, Mark. I'll get building soon.

My overall plan is to convert Revell's 1/180 USS Lionfish submarine from a Balao class to a Gato class, although I haven't decided yet which specific boat I will model. I hope to scratchbuild many of the missing details in addition to the basic conversion. Here is a rough list of what I plan to do.

- Drill out free flood holes/sand off Balao class specific ones
- Scratchbuild the railings in place of the poorly molded kit ones
- Drill out the torpedo tubes/add shutters
- Redo sail details
- Miscellaneous: scratch rear flagpole, radio wires, early war color scheme, detail/omit deck guns, scratch diving plane hydraulics, and maybe add signal flags.

This will be my first major attempt at scratchbuilding and conversion, but I think I will enjoy it. I have wanted to build a Gato class boat for a while, and since Revell's 1/72 kit is too expensive and big, I'm trying this.

Thats a huge chunck of resin! - give it a try on the keel, after all, it points downward and if you do a wooden base with not too much distance you can hide alot. much easier than turning it into a waterline model.

Completed entry for the campaign:

HMS Obedient (G48)
HMS Offa (G29)
HMS Emperor (98)

All OOB Tamiya 1/700. Base is a photoframe with plaster sea painted with acrylics. It's supposed to represent the North Atlantic with the confused water created by the close proximity of the three vessels.

More photos in the campaign gallery. I'll post these in a seperate thread so as not to clog this one up too much!

Hello Dave,
Great work.
i have not even started my Predread build. What are you eating or drinking so I can get some to finish my builds.
Your water base looks great.
Cheers,
Bruce

Nothing special. When I start a model like this I already have a specific effect in mind. As with my large corvette it was an overall impression that I was after, rather than a show standard model. About 15 hours here altogether, 1hr after work most days and a weekend when SWMBO was working - one finished dio!

Glad you like it!
