I call shotgun

Here's what it's all about:

The box, or perhaps we should call it container .. it's sooooooooo big

The Maiden-voyage:

I thought the hull parts could fit lengthwise in the kids bathtub. I was sooooo wrong!

Now we just wait for the parts to dry:

I'll use the next couple of weeks for studying references (I don't have a lot, so I hope to find more) and planning the build, and further purchasing of aftermarket parts.

Happy modeling!

Whoo hoo, the fun comences!

OK, I posted this in the old thread, but it looks like this is the place. I've painted the flight deck of Shokaku with Tamiya deck tan. My plan is to cut small strips of tape and mask off individual planks, then spray with a slightly darker shade of tan, then repeat. My question is how many shades do you all think I should use to be effective, three, four, more?

This is my first crack at doing this, so any advise from the experts here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

You know, Niels, there's nothing that makes a kit feel like a good modeling session than a nice warm bubble bath first!

I would try to use only three shades for most of it with a fourth shade thrown in every once in awhile.

I'm not completely sure I understood the question, but if this is what you have ind mind:

then the answer is quite simple ..... it's not water .... it's foamed mil .. I bring you .. The Worlds Largest LATTE Maker

Naaaa, just kidding ... it's smoke from the funnel, which pointed downwards on the Akagi, so the smoke didn't interfere with the action on the deck

Was the exhaust funnel always pointing down like that or was it movable?

Seems like it would also assist with providing some type of smoke screen against surface and sub-surface ships. The design seems way ahead of it's time.

I believe that the smoke funnel was fixed.

Most definitely fixed and quite an innovative design, IMHO, albeit not completely faultless:

"Akagi was given two funnels on the starboard side. The larger, forward funnel was down-turned 120° with its mouth facing the sea and the smaller one exhausted vertically a little past the edge of the flight deck. The forward funnel was fitted with a water-cooling system to reduce the turbulence caused by hot exhaust gases and a blind cover designed to allow the exhaust gases to escape if the ship developed a severe list and the mouth of the funnel touched the sea"

I'm in need of some assistance. Hope somebody can help me.

I won't be able to get the PE A, B and C sets for a while, but I really want to get started on the build.

Since I only have the Super Detail Set, I plan to set out as Dave Wong did, with the deck-girders.

But I also want to start assembling the hull, and this is where I could need some assistance. I'd like to request somebody to send me scans of the instructionsheets for the A, B and C sets, so I can plan what to build and what not to. This way, I hope to avoid, to build areas, that then will be impossible to reach with PE later on.

Hope somebody can help me.

Thanks in advance.

Niels,

Help is on the way, but be careful what you ask for. Apparently the word "basic" means something different in Japanese than it does in English!

Thanks to Michael for the help. The scans are already in my mailbox, and will be printed tomorrow, for further investigation

Started work on my USS Hornet CV-8 on Jan 1st by washing all of the plastic and resin. I noticed in the kit that I only have 2 of each F4F, TBD, TSD, and B25b. They don't look the best, Where should I go for some nice aircraft? Does someone make some nive resin or should I stick to plastic.

Go here http://usshornetcv8.blogspot.com . Thanks for reading.

The only company that I can think of that makes 1:350 WWII aircraft is Trumpeter. I am not sure how well the quality of those aircraft will compare to what came in your kit though.

While I will not be starting for awhile, I too an going to do an Akagi. It will be the December 7th1941 version and it will be in 1:700 scale. It might not be until February until I start. Trying to finish a scratchbuilt Kitakami first.

Your off to a very nice start, gentlemen!
I'll be holding back a while, even though I am aleady in the midst of reserach. I hope to finish the "Ships fo WWI" contribution first, then finish up the Leipzig and then turn to the Bearn. Until then: have fun!
It'sgreat to see some new names in this campaigne, too! Welcome to MSW!
Cheers,

hi guys...

Some progress on my USS Independence (CVL-22)

I used Tamiya XF-50 (field blue) for the deck colour... looks alright to me! Next up will be the camo scheme, Measure 33/8A.

Cheers!
