FineScale review was 2/24/2003. It is not a very in depth build review. There is a somewhat better review at Model warships.com

I see I'm not the only one tackling the 350 scale Akagi. I sure hope you had better luck with the underdeck PE than I did. i got some done. The front was a disaster for me, so I used pieces of rthe plastic stuff to supplement. I had better luck with the rear stuff, still no cakewalk there either. I got all the other stuff from the A, B, and C sets going well. and they look spectacular. Got the ship complete except for the island and above deck stuff. Got the hull and sides all painted and started to lay out the wooden deck. About half done with that. Still have a few lower railings to do as well as all the netting around the flight deck. Figure to have this done as projected (including aircraft) by end of March.

Speaking of Akagies, Here is some work done on my 1:700 one. Lost of stuff to correct and remake. The perforate bar you see is the underside of the overhang on the bow, no need to do a lot of detail, it won't be seen. Then the small walkway midship, then a photo of the stern motor boat storage with what the kit offered to the side.

Looking really nice. Glad to hear we have some people making progress.

I still have a full workbench with my previous/current projects but not to fear my USS Bogue will join us soon.

Thanks. Let me know if you want to know something specific. If you are going with the Lion Roar Super set, I quickly realized the instructions just have placement of their PE, not what needs removed from the original kit. I had to remove just about everything from the hull. Lets hope I didn't remove something I needed! The Lion Roar AA platforms are different size and shape from the ones modeled on the kit, you will not be able to just sand the upper detail off the plastic platforms and glue on the PE anti-skid. For three nights straight the Dremel and a chisel xacto blade was busy removing just about everything.

The stern boat deck redo, the midship walkway, and extending the bow overhang you see in the photos are all my work on making the kit more accurate. Lion Roar did not provide for these modifications, you need to get their IJN Perforate bar set for additional PE in these areas. I should redo the funnel area where it connects to the hull, but I don't think I have the strength.

Hello all some great stuff underway here just got myself the Dragon 1/700 USS Essex CV_9 with some PE in the box. This will be my first try at PE on a ship and I was wondering if any of you guys had info on this kit and the ship itself will be trying to get as much info as possible before starting the build
Cheers Keith

Hey guys.
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but was just wondering if this is open to anyone to join in? I have not moddeled anything since a kid and now at 34 i was hoping to start afresh. Joining in with others as part of this build campaign, i thought it would both keep me focused and hopefully be a great place to get advice. My tools are old, budget very low, skills unknown but i do have plenty of enthusiasm.

I believe anyone can join at any time. The goal is to finish your build before the end date, in this case the end of the year. There is a link on the very first post by Mark that will take you to the signup page.

Great work guys, and yes, I love to shower with my CVs., and great camo on the Indy, that really worked out well.

Also, I'm not asking to bend the rules but alas my new flat top build is the German Elbe WW2 which I guess counts me out as it never came to be built but I will post pix to the main site once it's finished.

Just joined. The 1 year duration will suite me

I will build, yet another Akagi This campaign should be called Akagi Cup. After much research, I finally bite it by sacrifice the 3-deck Akagi to supply the hull and other parts. This comes after I rebuilt the forecastle of the old kit, based on the new one! Now the new kit's part's going to be used anyway...arrghh..

Update 28/02

Minimal work required on the forecastle and boat deck.

Resin bridge is cut up and hollowed. Nagumo is sweating profusely.

I am affraid so since she wasn't completed and able to serve in the war, out of curiousity which ship was to be called Elbe? Would it happen to be the captured De Grasse?

ajkochev, Thanks for offering advice. could you clarify what you mean by the "bow overhang" please. Do you mean the alterations under the tub shaped part at the bow?

In the second pic you have indented the deck area. Ive seen that in another build http://www.h3.dion.ne.jp/~mokei/e-gallery-akagi.htm I was intending to follow. Im curious what pe your going to use as the second set of pillars as the Lion roar set only has replacements for the outboard girder pillars. Im using the Lion roar set also so I was wondering how to work around this.

I wont be able to start for about a month so Im avidly watching your build for direction

Thanks guys, i really appreciate being able to take part. I already have my inspiration photo for what i want to do, just hope im not a complete moddeling fail. On another note ive been looking through various campaign threads which have some really goo models. Do you guys maybe have a gallery of completed campaigns with maybe a shot from each model that was completed ?

Allan, if I may reply on your questions:

I think Anthony is refering to the hanger extension above the bow as the overhang. As for the supports around the hull, there are a couple of options:

1. Hasegawa triple deck akagi detail up sets A & B: triple deck akagi has a lot more of these supports than the modified version, both sets contain some support of varying sizes.
2. Gold Medal Models does an IJN carrier set which contains similar support structure, also with some useful parts such as crash nets however the nets may not be 'consistent' with the LR nets supplied with the Akagi set.

I have the same issue with my build, and using the hasegawa sets is perfect as they are designed to fit my hull to begin with.

Yes, the bow over hang is the tub shaped upper hanger. The kits is to filled in so I removed a section. As for the pillars in the midship walkway, I have several Tom's modelworks IJN Carrier sets with various parts removed. I'm going to cut down the masts on these and use them for the pillars. They are not square shaped like the pillars should be but it is close enough for me.

I'm going to redo the funnel area after all. The boat deck area should also be one level instead of the two different ones on the kit. I don't think I'm going to correct this though as the Lion Roar PE supports would be off and I don't want to have to correct them.

Its far worse than that, David as I have made some Fluegalrad, and Treifuegal plus Arado Blitz with V 1 atom bombs on board - no self respecting campaign would feature this outrage

The Elbe project was based on the Potsdam, and has been released by HP models - yes its them again I'm afraid.

Interesting, I tried to get a Frankenstein campaign going awhile ago but no one bit. I upguned a Baltimore class CA with 16 inch guns. Turns out that 16inch guns are a little too big the Baltimore's hull, but it doesn't look too ridiculous.

hi guys...

Just finished my USS Independence...

Kit is built OOTB. I used Gunze Mr Color 14, 307 and 338 for the Navy Blue, Haze Grey and Pale Grey camo colours, and Tamiya XF-50 for the deck.

As for the air wing, they are a tiny mini-project by themselves! But seeing that we still have the whole year ahead, I *should* be able to get them done..

Cheers!
