A little help on Jim's image posting....

Jim, a simple way of posting images:
- Choose image from your gallery (or whatever place, btw)
- Right click open in new window on the image
- copy address of the new window with image
- past it using the image tags (as you previously done)
. et voilá!!!

Hope this helps
Cheers,
Rui

Hopefully, using Rui's advice, I can now post a couple of pictures from Ramsgate Dynamo Day.

On the subject of inspiration for the campaign there are two excellent books by the author John de S Winser entitled "BEFships before, at and after Dunkirk" and "Short Sea: Long War" which are both in print. Out of print, but well worth obtaining or requesting from a library is "The ships that saved and army" by Russell Plummer.

OK nearly there - at least one came out.

Here is the second try.

The first should be of Sun X1 (again)
The second should be Sundowner and the third Southern Queen and Tahilla (previously Skylark)

Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the helpful advise Rui. I'm such a technophobe!!

I've made some progress on Canterbury II. Good photo references and potted history on this website:-
http://www.doverferryphotos.co.uk/pastandpresent/cbury2.htm

I've removed the features on the fore and aft decks, 'squared off' the front superstructure, rebuilt the aft superstructure and added a relocated hatch and companionway to fore deck. I've also developed a decal sheet based on the photos.

Here's some progress shots (fingers crossed)!!

Great work, everyone, and it's not only a ship building campaign but a website tutorial as well thanks to Rui.

And so, a fine feeling of shared building going on, and tonight it's onwards with my little dio. I've had a good time for research over the weekend, and now I shall start for real.

BTW, any ideas on the sea colour??? My dio is inshore so I think silt and brine = muddy colour turning to a light flat green going away from the shore.

In the meantime, come on, get those troops off the beach!

Hi, Peter!
I agree that a grayish-green fading to darker green toward the open sea will serve you best.

Probably you know this page
http://gallery.nen.gov.uk/gallery13587-.html
Plenty of inspiration here to litter up the beach of yours.

Peter,
For a suggested sea colour, check out my Royal Daffodil on the FineWaterline website. Sea is a mix of leaf green, cadmium yellow and burnt sienna acrylics.

The colour is true of the Thames estuary and a close match for the sea off Belgium (even on a sunny day!).

Jim Smith was looking for some PE figures.
So, I sent him a pack of Tom Modelworks Figures(120 per set)
Let us know what you think about their usability for Dunkirk.

Hello All,
Does anyone have a list of the ships that were used in the E-VAC so I can figure out what to build.
Thanks for any help,

That will be quite a list as I believe 933 ships took part!

However, in general terms, the naval vessels were mostly destroyers. Initially A to I class ships wre involved, but then the older ships (V & W classes, old S class and some of the WWI built leaders) were used as being less valuable.

One or two sloops were also used.

Minesweepers from the coal burning Hunt class and the newer Halcyon class were used extensively.

Paddle steamers impressed as minesweepers were used quite a lot.

Most of the other ships were impressed civilian vessels - cross channel ferries, Dutch and other coasters, lots of tugs from the old fleet tugs of the Saint class to impressed tugs mostly from the Thames area, RNLI lifeboats, and civilian pleasure craft.

If you can narrow down to the area that particularly interests you, I will do my best to help.

All the best

Hello Don & Stephen,
Thanks for all of your help. I hated to go looking through all my books for the few I have on the RN and Dunkirk, I do not even know which storage unit they might be in.
Again, Thanks,
Cheers,

Glad to be of help guys

The page was taken from British and other navies day by day This gives good accounts of action on certain days and obviosly the dates of dunkirk have plenty of entries .Also included is troop numbers picked up. If you have a particular ship in mind look Royal Navy service histories. This one is very useful as regard to what your ship did at dunkirk and when it was actually there. Again includes troop numbers picked up. Both the above are all part of Naval History .net

I agree, the Royal Navy Day be Day site is a very useful reference. If you are interested in the civilian or ex-civilian vessels, the de Winser and Plummer books I mentioned earlier are very good, but the on-line information is very scattered, although this one http://www.thamestugs.co.uk/ is good on the tugs involved.

I have decided to make a start and have posted a couple of pictures on the In Progress gallery for this campaign rather than try Rui's patience with yet another botched attempt to include picture here

My first diorama will include St Abbs and she is now complete. Now working on the string of cutters she will be towing and started the HP S class kit of Steadfast as Scimitar. Rather a nice little kit by the way.

The second diorama is in the planning stage and will include another Saint class tug as well as Kellett to be modified from the Finewaterline kit. The centrepiece is to be HMS Bideford just after she had been heavily bombed and lost 40 feet from her stern as she transfers troops already embarked onto Kellett. The plan for this has also been added to the In Progress section.

I have never represented damage before so any advice will be welcome. Roy was good enough to give me some hints last time we met, but I have decided to cast the hull of Bideford so if I make a mess of representing the damage, I can have another go without having to start completely from scratch.

This is becoming really interesting as its not just a ship in the sea going along or at anchor, this is something else entirely and a whole new area of modelling.

I have found so far.

1/. modelling the beach, and shallows together with colouring.
2/. damaged or half sunken ships.
3/. men in the sea up to their torso, and necks.
4/. explosions.

and what else is going to come up?

I've been looking at the sea effects but I haven't concluded at all, I need to keep on experimenting, so its continue time again.............

Did you hear that? ...........did you hear that?

Look what's just turned up - only the small boats set by David Griffith, and now I'm really spolt for choice. BTW, David Griffith wrote and illustrated the book on small scale modelling which everyone should have who's interested in this type of modelling.

The kit is available from Finewaterline at £8 inc. postage in UK - unless they charged me more?

Also, that sea I created above looks better on the net than in real life - I will try harder!
