Isn't it just great how quick some campaigns get on the go and are indeed able to draw a new crowd.
I have dug myself into the "Dunkirk" chapter of Harry Plevy's "Destroyer Actions" to identify destroyers participating in DYNAMO to find a suitable and attractive subject with maybe a realy cool story to tell. As my shelf is full of choices in terms of destroyers, I shall very likely chose one of those.
This is going to be a very good one and I hope to see a lot of progress shots here!
Cheers,
Guido

Having already asked guido about doing a destroyer for his campaign (torpedoes away) i think this is a much more suitable campaign for what i had in mind. It will be a destroyer from me but as to which im unsure as of yet. This will be my first build since slapping kits together as a kid so should be interesting. Great idea by the way, certainly plenty of smaller royal navy vessels with even the calcutta C class cruiser present.

If it's destroyers you are interested in, at Dunkirk you had RN classes S, V/W, A, B, E, G, H, I, J, Tribal, Canadian Fraser, Polish Blyskawica, French Bourrasque amongst numerous others on patrol, so a fair bit of choice.

Following on from Harry's generous offer I would like to put up a prize for the second voted model, both of our Fine Waterline sets 1 and 2, hospital ships and coasters, also the Hunt class sloop of which many were involved.
This will of course be exempt for myself, Roy and Don who have participated in putting the packs together, so the field is even more open!

Great opportunity for me to learn history and ship building My meager bookcase (and even meager knowledge base) consists mostly of US/Pacific information. Already learning a lot about Dunkirk.. find the story of the "Little Ships" even more fascinating the more I read. Some priceless nuggets of some of the participants:

- A Yangtze gun boat (the Mosquito
- A launch by the name Count Dracula, once owned by a German Admiral and scuttled in Scapa Flow and later salvaged
- America's Cup challenger Endevour
- A yacht ( Sundowner ) owned by the senior surviving officer aboard the Titanic
I will probably do a destroyer

Hi Everyone,
There is only one thing I do not like about voting contests.
The poor fellow who is in last place.
But, not this time.
A “Special Prize” for last place will be given.
And it will be a nice surprise.

The prize for last is usually fly fishing, Harry.
So, welcome aboard shipmates, and in accordance with international saftey regulations, please reda the rules and regs on the campaign page - in short, almost anything goes but check if you are not sure.
And, it was 70 years ago on this day that OPERATION DYNAMO was launched, and resulted in the saving of 338,000 troops.
OK, let's get those troops off the beach!
Best wishes to everyone,

That last paddle steamer above is Gracie Fields, and above that is the Medway Queen.
And for those who do not visit the Finewaterline site, or haven't seen the kits, here is a selection for your perusal.
The larger ships, Thanet, and Guernsey are already available with a number of the smaller ship and boats released today.
The sloop, and the trawler are also already to be purchsed however the Gracie Fields paddle steamer, right at the front, will be released shortly or sooner if you demand it!
Rob Kernaghan has already built the Gracie, and I have a test casting which I shall use - not the master as shown.
If you are in doubt how these kits go together, then watch this space..........
(All money received for these kits goes to charity).

The paddle steamers answer a question I've always had about that famous image of the line of troops wading into water chest deep towards a larger vessel with another man peering at them from a deck railing.
The 'day tripper' paddle steamers had very shallow drafts for their displacements, and unlike propeller vessels, their paddle blades did not have to reach deep into the water to b e effective. The photo could not have been taken from a propeller vessel of much size unless it were aground--and the troops would not have been heading towards her.

Good to see the campaign is go.
My inspiration came from a visit to Ramsgate yesterday to see the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships assemble for the commemorative trip to Dunkirk. 50 veteran little ships from an MTB to a sailing barge made a fine sight, as did the human survivors of Operation Dynamo who were on parade. The harbour museum featured a number of large scale RC models of civilian tusg which participated in the evacuation. The guy in charge of the models had been a tug man himself and told me of the exploits of his father and uncle who had been on Sun XI at Dunkirk.
I will post some pictures when I have worked out how to do it

Thank you everyone for your kind input, and giving this campaign vitality.
Yes, Harry, I agree with you, Don McKeand is a master master-maker, and excellent resin caster. I've got these kits twice now, and I'm waiting for Pack 2 to turn up but it's tempting to have those again as well without seeing them.
So, here are some more pictures from the books I have, and I have added my own illustration as to how I see my dio progressing. I also included a more detailed Gracie Fields (my master) which I shall be building.

And, I've started - with the base this time. I haven't modelled sand before so I thought to do that first. I've used coloured powders mixed with pva to make it stick down, and then water to blend it all in. I then added more powder to get that grainy look, and stuck the whole lot together with matt varnish spray. Not very scientific but I like it.

I continue.............

Ahoy, all ye MSW members, take heed!!!
Don't "Miss the Boat" on this campaign, mates!!! This is an ideal time to join in on the fun and learning experience of building a specific dedicated model subject!
There's no better way to build camaraderie with the other participants, and most likely will learn a lot about modeling techniques, as well as the various vessels at hand, than to join in on a campaign! Don't be shy, hit that "Enlist" button and get busy!
And the added "extra's" provided as prizes by Battlefleet Models and Finewaterline really help to sweeten up the folly!
So.....what are ye waitin' for???

Here is my entry. Finewaterline Isle of Thanet. I will probably build her as the Hospital ship 'Maid of Kent' - sister ship to Isle of Thanet (see photo #2 in Peter's first batch). A diorama will probably be built round her.

Oops!! Not only can I not post photos to this thread, but in researching Maid of Kent, I find out she was sunk a few days before the start of the Dunkirk operation.
Slight change of plan. I will use Don's excellent Isle of Thanet kit as the basis for a ship I do know went to Dunkirk - several times! TS Canterbury.
Expect to see some WIP photos once I've read (and re-read!) the how to post images.
