Here is all of the stuff I plan on using to make my small vignette of two British officers examining a mine that has broken free and washed up on a beach.

Thanks,

Randy

Hey Randy, great idea. I'm doing the same, but with a more "Aussie" feel. I have just got the balls for the mine, around 30mm made of paper. Going to be interesting trying to come up with one looking like a german ECM mine!

Nice work Sal, good looking figures

I have begun work on my VII D from Revell in 1:144 - and while I am at it, I have decided to build my VII C since they share many parts.

The D will be build using the Eduard "Tinsle" and the C will be pretty much out of the box.

A bit more progress on the Manxman.

A first with a White Ensign Kit though, and this may be down to me. A fit issue.

There are four vents that sit under the Pom Pom platform, so I test fir the Pom Pom platform.

tack the vents in place and refit it.

The seem to be to tall & the openings too large, also they would foul the etched support structure. looking at the drawings in the Profile Morskie, these vents were quite small and tucked under the platform. Plan is scratch four simple smaller vents, fill the orginal holes and move them in a bit.

Apart from the pom pom platform all major superstructure items are in place & camo has been added across them and the funnels.

again the figure with the rifle still needs his rifle sling and bolt
Photobucket
1 of the PE shoulder boards took a leap off the tweezers to parts unknown so I use the plastic 1's MOre to come

Sal-
Take your time. Figure painting is about patience and slow application of paint layers. Every minute you invest will show!
It's a good start til here!

I have been working a bit more on my "D" removing some of the molded on details to be replaced with the Eduard Etch first masking of the details that are supposed to stay:

Not sure I“m entirely satisfied, might have to sand off some more and replace the rivets with some Archer decal rivets.

I have allso begun detailing whats makes a D an D - namely the mine shafts housing aft the tower - the slobby work on the lids are intentional and are inspired by pictures in the 6th edition of uboats in focus, shoving some very derelict lids:

Besides that - some of the flood holes have ben opened up for a better definition:

Its raining today - so there is a good chance for some modelingtime

Love the battered lids, will add real character to the finished boat.

Nice progress, Jan. U-boot im Focus is really a great source of reference and inspiration. Great job on the lids.

Nice figures, Sal. Do not forget to give the skin areas and the uniforms a wash or two to bring out the details.

Looking forward to see more.

Hi, Jan!
Nice going!
BEWARE the D type subs had NO railing along the mine container compartment. I did that wrong on my D-Type. (...even though it looks real cool!)

Thanks Guido, I have to disagree, the pictures in U-Boot im focus edition 6 - page 36 and 38 clearly shows that U-215 in “42 had railing along the mineshafts and the lidtype included in the Eduard etch.

Mine are, for practical reasons (clumsy fingers) slightly overscale ... but I choose to make my own instead of usig the eduard flat etch stuff.

All the better!
Until here I have seen mislabeled pictures of a Type II having the same container with the railing. At the time of my building one of the editors of "in Focus" told me that no such railing should be seen on any of the D's at any point. It seems that history is still a fleeting thing after all! I gladly stand correced, as it makes my Type D more viable!
Cheers and keep up the good work!

A little progress over the weekend, mostly sorting out the troublsome vents under the pom-pom bandstand. In the end I shortened the supplied vents, Fitted the etched support structure, filled the holes in the deck and repainted, then refitted the vents. this time attaching them tio the underside of the bandstand, a few final adjustments and fitted it.

Also the cranes have been rigged.

The siren platforms have been fitted to the fwd funnel.

The rigging of the fwd and aft funnels is going to be fun, I think I am going to have to fit the tripod sections of the mast, as some of the stays pass outside the tripod legs.

More soon

Hello. I have several years as a combat engineer, and very familiar with landmine warfare. I do have a question.... Would an Improvised Explosive Device like what would be found in today's conflicts fit into your concept for this campaign?

work on the base over the weekend, not as much as I would like as the weather stopped be base coating it (I have to do all my spraying in the back yard)

My bases are generally very simple, just the ship either anchored or moving through a calm sea (too many ships to build, not enough time to work on complex bases)

step 1 - suitable base is dug out of the pile in my workshop, and as Manxamn is going to underway, also some plastic rod for the basic structure of the wake.

step 2 - the plastic rod is glued to the base to gibe the basic pattern of the wake (Yes it is a bit stylized)

step 3 - the base is covered in lightly crumpled kitchen foil, and the ship test fitted.

step 4 - this will a rattlecan coat of any suitable blue/green/grey to act as a base, colour dependant on where the the vessel is being depicted / time of year etc.

More soon

Good work there, Sal!

On the constructive criticism part I'd like to propose the following:
- The road looks pretty muddy. That should show as mud splashes on the car and on the boots of the soldires
- The car looks as if sitting on top of the road. At the given muddy look there should be tire tracks visible. As well it should looks lot better, if the tires were weighted. So you should sand the down down just a tad bit.
- The shrubs looks bit strange. I am not quite sure, but it may be, because the colour range of leaves on one shrubs is too wide. One shrub should have one colour, IMHO, while their individual colour may be altered by using some airbrushed colour.
- Airbrush a bit of dark wash where the car and the soldiers are placed to simlulate shaddow.
- Scene setting is OK, but I think it may look even better, if you'd move the upstage and place the clearing engeneer to the other side of the car, as though talking to the driver. The poses of the figures should look more coherent to the action going on.

Cheers,
Guido

Guido thanks for your help and suggestions
The road way was not intended to be muddy I was trying to go with a packed gravel type of road way, I think the paint may still have been wet but I will try and darken it up a bit
The color of the shrub look better in person but I guess the orange does stand out a bit, I was looking for a fall type look when the leaves change color, I never thought to air brush them but I'll give it a try
by upstage do you mean the clearing engineer who is standing, I did want to hide him behind the car
Ok, I'll try some stuff here and take some new pictures, thanks again
