I only recently found this thread and wanted to thank you for starting it. I have Merit's Hornet kit and have been hoping someone would start a thread like you have done (i.e. good photos, detailed descriptions and fast progress). Like many people I think you are doing a great job and I really enjoy following along. Keep up the good work.

OK, showing my ignorance here...What are the rectangular cut-outs in the deck, just forward of the island running across it?

Not ignorance and if you don't know asking makes sense
I think you are referring to the two windbreaks that were fitted on the deck to protect the aircraft when stored on the flight deck. If you google you will find plenty of photos.

Yes, those are the locations for the windbreaks.

May 16th update:
There is more work to the island than I expected. Progress is being made though. The funnel catwalk has been fitted along with the extremely frail PA speaker mounts. Both directors are ready for fitting to the island. The main mast is ready for paint. The weird looking ladder at the front of the main mast really has me stumped. I really can't imagine it's a ladder at all although it shows up in photos with the exact bends.The only thing that makes sense is it being a cable run support between the scanner and the radar position in the bridge. Maybe someone can confirm that idea

Really one sees brilliant!! The detail of counterfoil is very good, I saw Daniel Zambide's construction and his Tiffy 1/24 and he looked like to me an excellent model ..... but but ... these birds are very big of guarding!!

I hadn't forgotten Jan's theory that the wheelhouse design on the Yorktown and Fletcher class of ships was more or less the same. In answer to Jan and Daniel:
I really don't think that these wheelhouses are identical. The similarities in the photo's seem to be a round forward bulkhead and a very big gun director on top, (hey ! I added the orange peel antenna on my Fletcher build ).
Anyone care to drop their 2 cents in this discussion?
