Frosted is the best description. Seem to be meant more to let light through than to be a sort of window.

Most impressive piece of kit there Mr Swallows I had my eye on this one but was not sure about all the chat about not being the right shape and this and that wrong that some people find to complain about.In your opinion is it worth the effort to try and get it past the Missus or can I put the tin hat away

Hi Keith,
Difficult question. If you get your kicks out of measuring kits instead of building them don't think there is much on offer
The flight deck is apparently the wrong size and the hull is apparently the wrong shape according to the "men who stare at rivets".

On the other hand Merit's rendition doesn't have 5 elevators or an angled flight deck or a swimming pool behind the bridge so I don't think there is a serious risk of anyone mistaking the kit for the Titanic or the Cutty Sark.
It looks to me reasonably similar to the CV-8 USS Hornet and the aircraft supplied seem to bear out that surmise

All comes down to what you are looking for, and this model went from store to my car in 5 minutes flat when I saw it so you can gather that I liked a lot

If you do buy it good luck smuggling it past the Boss

January 25th update:
Filling up the ejectorpin marks on the forward elevator shaft. A hefty construction that shows how big those elevators were in reality. Also blackening the shiny gold anchorchain with the "Uschi von rosten" blackening liquid which I can thoroughly recommend. Capstans, bollards etc. starting to show up on the focsle- and poop deck. I bought what I thinks should be the necessary paint for the Hornet. I have deliberately bought a shade lighter of most colours because the recommended Vallejo paint looked too dark for the model:

Hi Russell,
The Big B took 1 jar of Lifecolour Hull red and 4 jars of Lifecolour Hellgrau. It also took about 1 jar Dunkelgrau and a jar of black. The Vallejo needs thinning so goes quite a way.
I'll see how far this goes

I managed to get hold of the rather ancient movie
Enjoyable except for the saccharine sweet scenes before the Hornet sets off to teach the Japanese a lesson.
Interesting footage though and enjoyable to see it again after all these years. If you can find a copy buy it, a painless way to spend 90 minutes.

Vallejo Model colour Hull Red, has a nice dull brown/red tint.
Took half a bottle thinnned down so very economical too

January 26th update:

Underwater hull painted and protected with a coat of Vallejo matt varnish. Work continues on fore- and aft elevator shafts.
Interesting to see the internal construction of this huge ship.
