Update 24th November, 2017
Well, things are a little quiet at the docks at the moment as I focus on the Typhoon for Airfix IV, however I am continuing to add railings as time permits. Given the nature of railings there's not a lot to show at this time, so instead I thought I'd to a bit of a SBS on how I prepare the base ready to mount the ship! Hope that nobody minds, but until I finish the railings, there's really not much to show on the ship itself
So, firstly I take a piece of paper large enough to draw out the limits of the the ship from stem to stern and also the beam. Then I allow around 15mm all around to determine the size of the base I will use.
I also position the ship onto this drawing trace around it and then onto that I space out the chocks which are 12mm wide and work how long each chock will be.
Once I've done this I then contract out to have the base made. This is because I do not have access to a table saw or a router. The guy I contract to stains and applies felt to the base.
using the lengths i worked out for each chock I then cut them to length from 12mm square, dressed all round pine. A bit of a sand to chamfer the corners then 3 coats of the same stain.
Then the centreline of the base is marked with a pencil and a set square used to mark the central chock position. It is important to work outwards in case your pitching is off.
I use an offcut to make sure each consecutive piece is parallel and at the correct pitch.
And there you have it
Hopefully I'll be finished the railing in a week or so and then it's a question of clear coat first or rigging first?
Any thoughts guys as to which should be done first?

Hi Russ,
Thanks for the step-by-step on the base. I usually mount my ships on brass pedestals to better show off their hull lines, but I think I might try the wood "drydock" blocks next time. Your wood base sure looks nice!

Cool tutorial Russ.
I am along the lines of the brass pedestal as well so how do you attach the boat? Drill up from underneath or glue in place?
cheers

G'day Russ. Great to catch up on this build, super work on such a lot of details, and such a variety.
Very nice looking base as well, thanks for the process info!

Thank you very much everyone for your kind words!
And thank you too for continuing to stick around on this build!
I'd love to do brass pedestals but unfortunately I don't have enough vertical 'real estate' in my display cabinet for them, so chocks it is
It's all glue holding it together too! The chocks are glued to the base using wood glue (PVA) and I'd usually use a 2 part epoxy to glue the ship down: it's all quite secure

Very nice work on the base.
If clear coat you mean flat coat, I'd flat coat the model, rig, then add a final coat of flat coat to cover up and glue spots from the rigging. If you rig before you flat coat, you'll find the flat coat building up in layers on your rigging (ask me how I know).

Ditto with Martin's advice - I've made the mistake of clear coating after the rigging was on... it looked like the model had just gone through a storm in the Arctic!

Thanks Martin/Tim!
As I suspected, I reckon rigging will need to be done after clear matt coat otherwise it'll look like it's been serving in the arctic!

Ahoy Russell
Nice work on the base.
Uh oh I just learnt something about flat coat and rigging.
Gulp.
Even more potentially bad news for my already heavily stalled project.
Cheers

what is this mystery project?
If you've rigged already and haven't flat coated, just skip that part no-one will know except us

Hey, yes, I've seen that Sean
I wouldn't stress about not applying a clear matt coat now you've done the rigging. I've got plenty of models that are quite content without clear coat

Although work has slowed down on the Prinz at the moment (railings etc) it is continuing throughout the festive season and is on track for a finish early in the new year.
In the meantime I just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
Happy modelling everyone and may there be some styrene related boxes under the tree
