Simon,
You're really making some great progress. I never thought to put on railing before gluing the parts to the main deck. I'll have to try that on my next ship.

Thanks Gaz,
It is a trick I have only just started using, three good things, firstly no issue with glue marks, secondly no chipping when you bend, and thirdly stops paint slipping over the deck edge.
You do have to be handy with the old hairy stick though, but then I think brush painted decks generally look more realistic, real ship's decks are always a bit patchy.
Cheers

Hi Si,
now that is quite some progress here - and remarkable progress! The work your are doing to transform the 1936 into the Hans Lody is really looking great, and it's quite a bit of scratch work you are doing there. And it's quite amazing to see the differences between the Z24 and the Z10! Fantastic work mate!
Cheers,
Jan

Thanks Jan,
It is quite a job, and getting the funnels right is going to be fun, I am also lucky in a way to have Bismarck to rob bits like the boat and Davits from, and Trumpeter providing the guns.
I would not be surprised, now I have got on with this that they announce a mod 34 or 34A.
Cheers

Nice and steady progress, Si. And cannibalizing seems a smart idea. In the big (1:1) scale it's been done all the time, but I guess you are familiar with the principle...
And - at least I would not mind somebody bringing out a 1934 or 1934a Z kit...
However, you're doing a fine job at your conversion!
Cheers,
Jan

Thanks Jan,
Yup, had to do it myself in the real world in my seagoing days.
Pleased with progress to date, the funnels are the really big job, more on that later.
Would be very happy if a Mod 1934, or 34A was released, interesting schemes and refits.
Always hope.
Cheers

Yesterday's progress.
The forward funnel being clad, the plastcard was bent round a paintbrush handle and given the hairdryer treatment.
Glued and clamped in place.
the rear section done as well and test fitted in place.
upper section of the funnel still to be formed, the vents at deck level need some work too.
main armament for both vessels under way.
Z24's 15cm at the top and Hans Lody's 12.7cm below.
All done, different views of both types.
Spot the "deliberate mistake on one of the Lody's guns.
One set of torpedo tubes decorated with Eduard etch.
Camo across the front of Z24's bridge painted in, still needs a clean up.
Z24 with all the guns test fitted in place.
Cheers

Simon,
I Appreciate the lesson in funnel building. My wife will be appalled to find that her blow drier is now fair game...lol
So, what was the purpose of installing one of Lody's 12.8cm guns upside down?
Z24 looks good!

Si,
that's quite some impressive work on the funnel! I hope you'll get front and back part aligned, I would imagine that this could be quite a challenge. Looks really good so far.
Z24 looks really nice, coming along really well! Those were nice boats!
As for Lody's 12.7's, certainly there's some kind of experimentation going on - be it whether the breach is easier to handle upside down or it has some impact on the aiming point...
Cheers,
Jan

Hi Gaz,
Thanks, Mrs Duster isn't aware I purloined hers for a little while, one of the few advantages of my workshop being close to out bedroom.
I will be honest, I didn't realise I had installed one of the 12.7's upside down until I saw the picture. I may find spares to make replacement, if not I will install it as No.1 gun, the error will be invisiivle.
Cheers

Hi Jan,
Thanks, quite pleased so far. Straightening out the starboard side top, The funnel cap will slot down inside the lower section for about 5mm, by overlapping the joins of the upper and lower sections, should be able to run Tamiya Extra thin into the join and clamp it. With a little luck should only need a gentle sanding should look OK.
The gun, was a simple loss of concentration, that I didn't notice till after I had uploaded the pictures.
May replace it, or hide it in No.1 position.
Cheers

Looking good, Simon. I am becoming very interested in all these DKM destroyers kits that are available. I think I will build an early version also.

Thanks Jan,
I am quite pleased with that, just need to get the angle right, then I can build the new deck house to go behind it.

Nice work on the 15 cm guns, nice detailing!
The red color comes a little bit as a surprise - I am well aware that the DKM turret tops had all kinds of colors during the war for aircraft recognition, I didn't know for the destroyers, though... However, would make sense for those that operated in areas where the Luftwaffe was active as well.
And it gives a nice touch!
Cheers,
Jan

Thanks Jan,
I am quite pleased with them.
The red is striking, I was surprised, even with the rafts attached to the gun-shields it is still very much in your face. Mind I suppose for a JU88 sweeping in out of the sun, it would need to be in your face, otherwise they wouldn't spot it before it drop it's load.
Cheers

Finally, a few minutes to update Sunday's progress.
Looked again at Z10's after funnel, looked a bit short yto me, so built Mk2.
looks a bit more like it.
Band going round the top of the fore funnel.
New after funnel in place, I think the superstructure is a bit wide for a mod 34, but I am going to live with it.
Cap under construction in the fore-funnel. the band has also been filled to shape.
Will trim to shape with a new blade, and add the grill from plastic strip.
Cheers

More progress on the fore funnel, angle of the cap defined with tape ready for cutting.
Cut to shape.
Grid inside the funnel cap fitted.
Stem pipes added to the rear.
Test fitted in place.
deck behind the funnel restored,
After funnel given the same treatment.
An overview of the project so far.
A small bit of progress on the Z24.
Quarterdeck winch assembled.
Lockers on deck.
More soon.

Fantastic job with the funnels, Si!!
And very nice progress overall to your Hans Lody!! - just the amount of white plastic gives a good impression how far it differs from the kit and the scratch building you have done! That's quite an endeavor!!
Cheers,

That's some superior scratch building. I like the steam pipes especially.

Thank you Jan,
I will admit it has been a bigger task than I first thought, and it is stretching my skills somewhat, but I am enjoying it.
Next bit of scratchbuilding, new deckhouse behind the after funnel, once that is done, and railings on the midships superstructure might get some paint on the superstructure.
Cheers
