Thanks Jan, the kit is impressive. I think with just a couple of tweaks it would be better. It has some nice PE but no railings for the main deck. I know you can buy them from NorthStar pretty cheaply so it would be no big deal to include them price wise. The other is the instructions are not the most logical (but that might be my forgetfulness in remembering to follow the steps some times.

And on the Typhoon, I don't think I will ever find a reason to build it.

A brief update on some fiddly stuff that took a lot longer than I expected.




And the trickiest bit of railing in the kit.


which went more smoothly than I anticipated.


I hope this weekend to make some more progress.

Really a nice job bending that PE railing. How hard was it to get it into shape?

after a month I got sent 1 sheet showing no rigging and side views of parts here is part of the plans from profile morskie there's more detail in the instruction sheet from hobby boss than these so called plans total waste of money

I do the straight bits first and and focus on those then the areas to be curved I use either a paint brush handle for the smaller ones and a Xacto blade holder for the larger. It is of course a fair amount of trial and error but start at one end, test fit each section and after about 20mins of you get close. I don't think it's ever perfect but I glue short areas at a time and adjust.

Hi Peter,
I bought this for about 20quid from a UK bookseller through Abebooks

While it has some rigging diagrams for the radio aerials it has a lot of photos that you can use to form an overall view of the rigging. If you build Strasbourg it should give you some insight to that. If nothing else, it has a great story about the battle at Mers-el-Kebir.

Or you can follow my attempts to do some rigging once I have finished though I don't promise too much

Hi Peter, are you talking about the Strasbourg kit? I know it didn't have the rear facing searchlight platform.

One drawback of short stints of modelling means less photos.
Some progress has been made on the assembly and painting front.
This is how Dunkerque stands at present.


I was trying to keep with a OOB build but I have started some rigging on the main yards with mixed results.

I think I will redo the ones on the right.

And in another slight deviation from the kit I extended the rear mast and added a yard that appears in photos.


Main bits to finish are the boats, the various stairs and the railings. As previously mentioned there are no railings included in the kit for the main deck. I have a set of NorthStar railings which provides for about 130 cm, unfortunately is seems it will be about 10 cm short of what is required to cover the lot.

looking good cant wait to see the rigging done I am having a break got to do tax return but here are the 2 sisters together so you can see the differences just got the rigging and sea to do are you putting any figures onto your model I add some just to give a sense of scale when someone looks at it
but what colour was the uniforms

They look fantastic. Looking forward to seeing them in the water!
For my Dunkerque I am just trialling some different rigging ideas for the radio antennas. I am using a form of eze line which is difficult to get any sag with shape. Hopefully in the next day or so I can post some pictures of it.

On the Strasbourg main superstructure I can see the main differences. It's great that Hobby Boss have the caught them pretty well. I really hope they do a late war Richelieu.

Work continues at a French pace at the Dunkerque dry dock.

The back end, stern, aft, whatever it should be called is pretty much complete. Painted the Loire seaplane, shipped the loading crane, added the railings and named the ship.




The additions here from the kit here the railings, the catapult cord and the crane cable and pulley. A little bit of detail for interest.

Next up was the rigging. On the rear mast this time. A stop start affair, mainly because I got it half rigged then knocked the mast off. While the rigging remained attached it was impossible to sort out the tangled mess so a restart. I was also experimenting with the radio aerials. Let me know what you think.

Only half done because I ran out interest after completing the repairs.
You will also have noticed, that like the plane crane, I added some cables to the boat cranes.

Once the rigging is done I can add the railings and finally the boats.
