Simon, that masking is not so difficult as it seems. I do have masking sheets of different width so you just need to decide which one you will need and then cut it in length. I also bought me a masking jig from Voyager not long ago and it did helped me too with creating the right size of the waterline marking:

Yes you are right - I do feel exactly the same. This morning before I went to work I felt the urgent need to uncover the final results and removed the masking with tweezers at the breakfast table. A feeling similar as Christmas for me

Ok the masking continued for the ship´s hull. First I did sprayed the antracite watermark and after that masked it with masking tape


Then I continued with the hull red color. I am somewhat suspicious about Revell´s color recommendations. I´ve bought me their red according to their manual but it seems much too bright for my taste. Luckily I do also own Lifecolors German Kriegsmarine hull red which looks much more familiar to me. So I did used this one

Then it was time for the white ship´s color. I used GUNZE´s offwhite which fits perfectly for my taste

the last color is a yellowish ochre color. Revell does recommend here 50% white - 40 % yellow - 0% ochre. There are many models of this ship which used a too yellowish color or just plain yellow. I can understand modellers who are afraid mixing such a specific color but as I knew what will come as I decided earlier for this scheme I was forced to create a suitable mix. I did used GUNZE colors offwhite - cream yellow - middle stone and wood brown in a ratio of 5-4-1-1 and I do think I hit the nail with the true original color tone. The only difficult is to repeat these mixes later as I will need to repeat this color again during later construction stages

...and this morning after one night drying I removed all the masking full of expectations about the things to come...


And I think everything was worth the efforts . There are some spots to improve (forgot to paint the insides of the middle deck) but I really like her already

I like the masking Jig, that looks to be a very useful tool. If they are still around I might well try and track one down. It is not that I find masking that difficult, just tedious and anything that simplifies is good by me.

I agree, Thomas! If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend mixing all the paint you think will need for this project, plus a little extra. In the past I've found it almost impossible to precisely duplicate my paint mixes later for touch ups, repairs, etc.

Anyway, you clearly now what you are doing - Emden is looking great!

Agree with you Tim. I will mix what I think will complete the model so I wouldn't have to try to match later.

Time for nerves exercise: I did started with improving the middle funnel. This is how the thing is looking out of the box:


Eduard ask you to sand down all the molded on railings and add their microscopic etched parts which almost can only be attached if you have accomplished a BA in heart surgery



Nevertheless I decided to change also that wrong piping around the funnel and made a new one with 0,4 mm lead wire. Just some stop-valve wheels are necessary later. I also drilled four holes at the top of the funnel for the later necessary funnel ropes (correct designation?!)



And - as expected - it was not a stroll in the park to add all those railings (had to fight successfully with the carpet monster to get back one MIA railing part). But the result is very satisfying to me:

It is done! I achieved all three funnels completely with their railings, pipings, serviceplatforms and antenna holders. It was not easy - lost two railings to the carpetmonster but EDUARD have wisely give you some more than necessary here.

At the end of the day (and of my elephantine patience) everything is finished for painting and looks that way:

Hey that sounds fair

I want to share some more of my todays work at the bridge and some other small parts.

first I painted the insides of the lower armored bridge and the upper bridge in offwite and masked the windows of the upper bridge not to spray the outside´s brown-yellow color inside. The masking paper can easily be removed after all painting occured later


Then I painted the deck´s surfaces and installed the steering wheel


There was a gap between the upper and the lower bridge part as you can never achive an 100% accurate fit at this scale (at least not me). I made a small Evergreen strip around the floor and after glueing the parts together I improved the look with putty. Looks better now.


I did finished the aft auxiliary steering post. It was a very delicate affair


Everytime when there was a need to stop because glue, color or putty needs time to get thoroughly dry I was able to accomplish some more small parts for the cruiser which all need to get painted later, too.


Will approaching the second painting stage soon...
