Thomas,

Those gangways look wonderful, nice job. The canvas on those railings did come out very nice.

Very impressed so far. She has an eternal link with Australia through her unfortunate demise.....Cheers Mark

Hi Mark, yes she have an eternal link due to HMAS Sydney. As far as I know it was the very first Australian naval victory in WW1?

Very nice Thomas,

The gangways look neat in place, and the detail work on the boats stands out. Canvas covers look good too, the old Krystal klear works well.

Happy Christmas,

Si

Thank you Si - Merry Christmas for you, too!

Thomas,
She really looks fantastic! The boats and davits add a lot to the deck detail.

I am really enjoying this build! I wish they made Emden in 1/200 scale!

Gaz

Hello Gaz, yes she is becoming difficult to touch - actually I already broke off and reglued quite some parts... An Emden in 1:200 would indeed be very interesting as you would be able to bring out much more details in this scale.

Cheers

Merry christmas to all shipbuilders!

Despite celebrations with the family and meeting good old friends I was able to get some progress here (the secret is never sleep ). I did finished the stern main mast. The railings at the round and oval platforms were very fiddly and actually I lost one railing of the lower platform to the carpet monster (*GULP*) and it was never to be seen again. It has to be replaced by a similar spare part:

I painted the last 3D-printed parts I do have for the ships, the searchlights. I prepainted them outside with gloss silver and after drying with blackgrey. I made a picture each of a kit part and the 3D pendant to see the difference:

Season's greetings Thomas,

Nice work on the masts, the 3d printed searchlights are a big improvement over the kit parts.

Cheers

The bow mast is finished, too. Again the searchlight platform railing was a tricky job.

Now the ship looks like this:

Some small works left (painting the masts, hatches for the lower deck guns, shrouds for the stern mast, steering apparatus for the stern searchlights) before I can start with rigging.

@ Si, Mark and Mark: Thank you so much for watching and commenting my build. If you like what I do then Iīll be happy.

Today I did continued with some very miniscule parts again. As Eduard photoetched hatches for the lower deck guns are just provided for two instead of all four guns I was forced to buy another etched set or build my own hatches with thin Evergreen. As the budged for this small boat already overstepped sanity I decided silently for the second option:

After this I painted both mast (last time mixing that ochre-like prewar color "yippiee" ) I made the connection lines for the telemotor of all the searchlights - thanks again here Michael! Then were the shrouds coming for the stern mast. After all they look like this:

Stern mast

bow mast

All hatches (etched and Selfmade) were added, liferings glued along the ship, some minor color improvements were done, anchor was installed... then I discovered there were no more parts (exept the anchorchain which will be installed when the ship will be placed anchored at its diorama base later) to be installed for this ship

Now, before rigging will start the ship looks like this:

Oh, and I discovered a company which offers metal-like plates out of your wishes for your finished models for a reasonable price. Their name is SAGITTA-MODELLBAU and the owner is Harald Schartel. You can reach him with email at [email protected] . I am not connected or affiliated with them - just a nice and honest guy to make business with.

This is the plate for my once in the future finished Emden:

Just to make sure I already ordered a plate for its sister ship, the Dresden, which I also do own and will build in its grey livery one day in the future

Actually I did order some more plates for different ships I already have in stash. Mr. Hartel is preparing for some more plates for some other ships I do have

Ok then - the dockworkers will have off now for this evening befor we let the spiders work tomorrow!

Cheers

Hi Thomas!

I'm finally able to catch up on all the amazing work going on here at MSW and comment, even though my own dock yard is quiet at this time.

Amazing work on your Emdem and it will be great to see her fully rigged together with her nameplate, which looks right at home

Thank you Russell! It will still be quite some way to the finish line. This ship has quite some rigging - I donīt know how much I can do here. Then I will need to create a base for my planned anchorage scene and then there is a need for crew members. I have some packs from Northstarmodels Deutsche Kriegsmarine which I plan to use here since these guys look very similar to the WWI sailors of the Kaiser (at least in 1:350 scale).

Thomas,

Nice work with those masts. Never knew searchlight could be control remotely. Those open hatches on the lower hull guns really add to the detail for those positions on the ship.

Hi Mark, I also didnīt knew that but Michael told me about that as he have scale plans about this ship. I also like the open hatches a lot but one need more and more carefulness to touch the ship now as more and more fragile parts are on now

speak about broken parts and just another accident happened: the one gangway broke off and had to be reglued. It was necessary to hold the tweezers until everything dried carefully with the tensed thread threre so I used my "third hand device". The unlucky harbor worker who was responsible for this mischief was immediately court-martialled

Before rigging starts the ship needed to have ist flag first. I discovered that my previous flagpole was to short and had to be renewed

I did made a new, longer one with thin wire and improved him with his appropriate flagpole holder

Then I beheaded another bottle of whine, putted the whine in the gutter (just kidding ) and used its lead foil for my flag. Iīve bended it with a toothpick accordingly to my wishes to resemble a flag of an anchored ship with just a slow breeze inflate her

then I painted her with Gunze offwhite as a base for REVELLīs flag decal

after enough drying time for the enamel color I applied the decals together with enough Mr. Mark Softer liquid which made the decals really soft so they slipped smoothly on the flagīs surfaces. After dry again I repainted some spots with black and red

and this is the way the flag look attached to the shipīs flagpole. Iīm very satisfied about it

Thomas,

Convincing scale flags are always a challenge, but your flag technique is simple and effective!
