Nice recovery with the bridge. That is a lot of PE you have there in that last photo. She is looking to awesome when you have them in placed and painted.

I improved the ship´s breakwater as I thinned the part a bit for more realistic thickness and added reinforcement sheets out of Evergreen styrene. Looks better now

Great progress Thomas. Looking forward to seeing all that PE in place. As Mark said that is going to make a big difference.

Painting process finished - I had to mix two times the Color for the airbrush and did somehow manage to get a very similar shade so there is no difference visible at the different parts


One insider´s tip for the audience: If you don´t want to mix the suggested yellow beige Color out of four different Colors you can easily just use Gunze Hobby Color H71 "Middle Stone" which is an identical color shade - at least I can not see an evident difference to my elaborate mix.


Now I need to paint the funnels top in black, some of the gangways of the superstructures in Linoleum brown by hand and then it´s time to "mate" the deck onto the ship´s hull and install some of these superstructures

Hi Thomas, The color is really starting to tie everything together! It looks as though you may have blown off the footrail on the top of the middle funnel, though. Quick, do your search before the PE carpet monster claims it forever!

ARGH! You are right, didn´t realised this before. Will start a search and rescue mission immediately. Thank you for your hint!

Willkommen an Bord Jan! Another welcomed known passenger. Thank you for your flowers. I know well about crazy real-life schedules too, with two small daughters and a dog which want to be entertained too. But I was glad to have had one week holiday and that was the reason to be able to achieve so much in this short time. During the week I usually dont have the stamina nor the nerves to build after coming home from work.

Very nice work Thomas, I had missed this build. I will be watching now for sure! You posted some comparison photos of the aftermarket guns next to the kit ones earlier in the build. Would it be too much trouble to post some photos like that, but with the 3D printed ones painted? It is so hard to see the detail on those printed parts.

Some massive updates! Very impressive!

John - sorry for my very late reply but I was a bit lazy on that project somehow. The original kit guns are already in the garbage incineration plant.

The gun parts are not yet painted exept these under deck. As Tim said before the Colors does not adhere well to these parts. The black pinwash was still ok for the Mk. I Eyeball but not anymore for the 10 x camerazoom. I tried some more photos for you with a better light.





that huge blob on top of the gun is a small part of my trigger finger






Hope this helps. If needed I can make more pictures later. As I said these are maximal zoomed in pics. for the normal viewer these tiny guns look great.

Hello all,

sorry for the small hiatus in my build blog but during the last few weeks I was very busy in work and when I came home I ran out of steam somehow.

Nevertheless I was not completely unproductive: I was able to mate the prepainted and pinwashed superstructures with the ships hull and made the bridge windows with cristal clear. Now they look like real glass




Revell´s kit have a lot of simplifications and ommissions; for example at the top Bridge deck there should be a rangefinder located but there isn´t one. Luckily I was able to salvage a resin one out of a VETERAN´s IJN set which fit perfectly for the task.


at the stern platform Revell (and Eduard too) recommend you another compass repeater which is bogus as there should be the aft rangefinder located. I used another one of my resin VETERAN parts.


I found my first mistake inside an EDUARD etched set! As I wanted to install the etched beams for the lifeboats I discovered that I will need 4 x part 83 of EDUARD´s Emden Part 2 set. Eduard shows you two parts for each side (which would also be correct according to my references) but provided just two parts altogether. This way I was forced to build two more out of thin Evergreen sheet. Not an insolvable task...


As the shapes did changed because of the etched superstructures there were some slight misfittings with the real wooden deck. Some areas had to be complemented with some spare wooden parts or got just repainted with deck tan color. If you don´t know it you will not realise the difference anymore I believe.



Another ommission are some airvents which should be there. I accomplished that task with some small Evergreen rods, bended in cocking water and then drilled out with a 0,3 mm drill. There are two hooded vents at the ships stern. I made the domed covers out of punched out whine bottle foil bended with a pen.


Then there were all the lifeboat Davits waiting for me. The EDUARD etched set for them is tiresome but will improve the look a lot later after proper painting.



Thats it for today - tomorrow I will mix my special beige color again and spray all these tiny parts

Today there is another update of my build. I finished up all the railings and small stuff at my ship. The ship´s size is very small and there are a lot delicate parts and pe-parts. Now - from the distance - it looks like this:


I can say it was a good decision to buy me this MINI ship Building berth from LMG which is a huge improvement for Fixation of the kit while you can work with both hands at it. Especially for this kit it is very recommended!


This is maximum zoom at the bridge. She is completely consisting out of photoetched parts and I can say if you feel satisfaction and fun building it you might have a slight masochistic tendency... I did improved the top deck with adding two aperatures which are missing in the kit - I don´t have any clue what the real ones are for:



The photoetched covers for the coal chutes were added carefully, too


...and more stairs and railings everywhere


and finally a detail shot of the boat´s stern with all railings. vents, lockers, stairs etc. in position


Now we are tackling the lifeboats!
