Last weekend's progress. (more etch)

The torpedo net boom mounts. The first mount assembled.



The first couple in place.



all sixteen done.



The first section of the net shelves assembled and ready for fitting.



Fitting the port side net shelves.









The first of the crutches for booms on place.



Not quite half way round, so a couple more sessions before I can think about paint.

Even at 1/200 scale those net shelves had to quite a challenge to get on straight, hats off to fine job.

It is "fun", fortunately there is one useful aid, the support struts sit on a join in the plating, so t least I have something to try and line up on.

And excellent job on those torpedo net parts! Trying to get those support legs on right would have driven me mad. Did you use regular CA?

I'm curious to see how the nets were kitted.

Thanks Gaz,

I used a Gel CA, as it grips a little more quickly.

I must admit, they made me a little nervous and I very nearly did wimp out and use the kit parts. The kit parts are simplified, consisting of three sections per side with the supports just needing to be folded down. I am sure they would look great in place, and that was the back up if I mucked these up.

Usual great Pontos design, I will add a picture of the next section showing the parts prior to assembly, it will be easier than trying to describe it. suffice to say it makes it easy to get the supports straight.

Pontos provide etched extended nets, nothing for stowed either in the kit or the Pontos set. I will be using the extended nets, because they are there.

The extended nets should be a real eye-catcher! And I'd be real keen to see some of your parts in-the-making.

In 1/350 scale, I know of some who have used shoe laces for the stowed nets with varying degrees of success. I've done an experiment with some nylons to try to get more of a mesh look. I still haven't had what I'd call real success. I sometimes wonder if there are just some things that can't be minimized enough.

Hi Gaz,

Apologies mate, but you may have a little wait, the booms and the nets will be going on last. I have to say what Pontos provide looks quite outstanding on the fret.

Stowed nets are tricky, I tried have nylons myself but the mesh is generally too fine and they ware way too soft. Shoelaces can work ok in 1/700th. If you can get hold of fine plastic mesh, the sort of stuff used in strainers quite stiff but it can be rolled and lashed. It is not easy in find in sheets on this side of the pond, but some smaller hardware stores may carry it.

This week's progress.

The basic parts of the net shelf.



The section assembled.



The starboard bow section is slightly different from the port, with a gap between two section.



A slight flaw in the construction, it doesn't look too bad with the Mk1 eyeball.

The starboard side all fitted out with net shelves and gear for the booms.



One small job before the Admirals walk, racks for the stream anchors. There are kit parts provided for this, do the holes need filling.



And the racks in place.



Work started on the Admiral's walk.

The underside structure underway.



That just needs some etched struts and then it can be fitted, then it is paint time.

It is a pay off. I agree there is a risk, the pros are you get a good clean plastic to brass join, and you are not risking the finish by adding the brass onto the painted surface. The con is the risk of knocking bits off.

The other thing, once I have paint on, only pick her up below the waterline!


I do appreciate your concern, the most inporting thing is not be complacent moving the model around.

This weekend's progress.

Quite a bit of progress too.

Brackets on the walk.



Fitted in place.



Ready for paint.



Primer coat on.



Anti fouling (Tamiya TS33) sprayed, doesn't look a lot different in shade from Halford's red primer.



Whilst this lot is drying, building the other three 3" bow & stern chase guns.









Barbette breakwaters, as moulded.



moulded detail removed, and fitting under way (on the larger forward unit).



The after breakwater completed.



The etched detail added to the forward breakwater, it did have to be annealed to get it bend. That is the discolouration on the brass.



The lower hull masked, ready for spraying.



Sprayed.



along with the 3" guns.



The barbettes and other deck areas not covered by wood sprayed white.



Next jobs, fitting the 3" guns then the maindeck.

Yes the admiral's walk will have a railing, that will go a little later. before that the etched wood gratings will have to be painted and fitted.

This week's progress.

The wooden gratings that form the deck of the Admiral's walk sprayed.




The bow and stern chase port hatches sprayed to be fitted in the closed position.



The first of the 3" guns fitted.



On the side with closed ports, the inner of the four part hatch will require ro be posed open, as there is no allowance for the barrel.



The hatches closed, well three out of four isn't bad.

The wood grating fitted and washed, and all around 110 portholes have been glazed with Krystal Klear.



The deck has also been fitted. I did have one small accident, when giving my pot of wash a shake the top leaked, a few splashes all over the quarterdeck. No biggy, they will be covered by the Pontos wood deck.
