Thanks Dave,
Still lots to do, not getting time at the bench at the moment, so there may be a bit of a hiatus.
I am looking forward to getting back to it.

Thanks Jan,
It is getting not only the major differences, but the little bit and pieces that changed between the wartime and the commercial fit is the enjoyment of this build,

Got back onto this over the weekend.
Base coat on the lower superstructure.

The davits and vents fitted and the deck painted light grey.

The boats with the etch fitted, (except for the oars)

the boats painted and fitted.

The after deckhouse changed quite a bit between war & peace.
The deck modified from.

to.

Cheers.

A bit more progress.
The basic assembly of the after deckhouse, and test fitted in place.

The funnel platforms and whistle are overscale and wrong for a 60's fit.
out of the box, test fitted.

cleaned up, and the derrick booms for No.3 hatch fitted.

from above.

The after kingpost and it's deckhouse assembled and test fitted.

An overview of the project so far.

Cheers

Si,
Very nice work on the Derrick assembly and installation. Makes me want to open up my kit and take it on.

Si,
I just started building the HMS Zulu by Trumpeter. It is for the National IPMS show coming up next month in Texas. My first choice for the show turned into a complete disaster with the paint work.
Anyway I am having a hard time finding references on the Zulu. I have read that during her last war modification that either 2 pounder (40mm) single barrel or 2 20mm single were added to the bridge wings. I been unable to find any close up photos of her after the upgrades to verify which weapon were installed. I know you are working on the HMS Eskimo diorama so maybe you may know a good reference source.
Thanks,
Mark

She's looking beautiful, Si.

That deep underwater hull shows the mission - these things rode low under those intense cargo loads!

Thanks Mark,
The derrick layout is a little unusual, I believe on No.3 hatch they were originally stowed vertically, post war shipowners seemed to prefer to have them stowed horizontally.
Looks right for the photo I have of this vessel.
On the subject of HMS Eskimo, I have had a dig through my references, almost everything I have Eskimo is early war. I did find, In the "Warship Special 2, Super Destroyers", a photo of HMS Nubian fitted with single Bofors on the platform between the funnels. It is not clear if, but they look like MkV boffins, she has twim MkV 20mm on the lower bridgewing. The only text states:-
"Towards the end of the war 40mm Bofors began to appear on the Dominion ships and at least one of the RN survivors (Nubian)"
Sorry I cannot be more help.

Thanks Tim,
From the photograph I have of the World Legion, the plimsol line sits a bit below the demarcation, for some reason quite a few ships kept the high demarcation which was well above post war loadline regulations.
Looking at photos of WW2 convoys they did load them deep, but as you say, that was the mission.
Thanks for looking in.

Not a problem Jan,
This is turning out to be a lot more involved than I initially thought, but she will be unique when she is done.

Sometimes more information when you are well into a build is not good. In this case, a friend of mine in the business has sent me a couple of drawings and pics from the ships pre - Niarchos days and it would appear she underwent some sort of conversion to a bulk carrier, steel hatchcovers, vents for ballast tanks, different winches for the derricks.
I am putting this on hold whilst I work out how much of what I have done needs re-doing and how much scratchbuilding will be needed.
The final question will whether to abandon this build and start again, and maybe find another less modified to finish this one as.
meantime I will lay new keel withing the next couple fo weeks.
Cheers

It is frustrating Tim, but then I did start when I had only one photograph to work from. impatience is the more often than not a short cut to disaster in this hobby. I will return to it, there are plenty of post war Liberty's out there, just need to find another one to inspire me.
I do intend to have another run at the World Legion, but I am thinking it is going to be easier to start again rather undo what I have done as there are quite a few structural changes at maindeck level, and I need to research late 50's / early 60's MacGregor hatches too, shouldn't be too complicated (he says) to do a decent job, but i would like to get it right.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers

Si,
very frustrating and sad, but yes, I'm with you there. This has been a really great build so far, I'd hope you don't scrap her but find an old original that comes close to your build as far as you got. Looking forward and will definitely following your next approach on SS Work Legion!

Hi Jan,
She is now the SS ??. This one I will complete as another more standard port war Liberty. I think I will look at Shipowners who are still trading today, Fredricksen, Livarnos & Bottiglieri to name but three.
For the World Legion it will be easier to start again from scratch, and then I will have an interesting pair of Libertys. Might need to build a wartime fit too, the three side by side...
I am going to stop there. I am going to take a break from this and build something else, then come back with a proper plan.
Cheers,
Si
