Going off my usual beaten track, picked a Trumpeter 1/350th Jeremiah O'Brian cheap through a fellow modeller, the kit has sat in my loft for some time whilst I was deciding what to do with it.

I did start researching wartime liberties, looking for one with a history that struck a chord, as usual I got side-tracked into their post war careers. I knew they formed the backbone of the fleets of the up and coming post war Shipowners, largely Greek, sone Italian, (too many to mention) , a number of these were to become household names.

I started my career ashore in 1986 with Niarchos (London) Ltd, in their shipping department, starting off in Statistics and finished up as a shipbroker.

I knew the there were Liberties in the fleet, long before my time. The shipping side closed down in 2004, the old company was a dead end. I scoured the net, and found one photograph, on a website very strictly copyrighted, so I cannot reproduce it here.

The World Liberty belonged to the Niarchos fleet from 1962 - 64, and was commercially managed through my former office. She was a externally pretty unmodified, except for removal of all the armament and mounts, except for the circular part of the after gun platform, and an enclosed bridge was fitted.

The colour scheme is typical of it's era:-

Black upper hull,
Red antifouling,
White superstructure,
Reddish / brown decks,
Dull yellow masts & vents,
Black mast tops
Black funnel with white / red/white / blue white bands with a black outlined white N, and the same across the bow.

I am not 100% sure, but it is very likely she was under the Red Ensign, and London registered, Either that or Greek flag & Pireaus. Still have time to work on that.

Enough waffle, here is the start.

The Kit,

The Eduard etch,

Quite a lot of it is to do with the armament, but there are many useful bits for the hatches and derrick booms.

First job, filling the locating holes for gun positions on the foredeck.

The underside.

The topside cleaned up and ready for fitting.

The hull basic assembly done, a little filling and sanding to do.

More soon.

Si

I just received this book from Amazon and it has some very interesting stuff:

Liberty's Provenance: The Evolution of the Liberty Ship from its Sunderland Origins

Good stuff for the model builder. Drawings are in 1/600 scale so you must rescale them.

Simon: How much of a problem do you anticipate where the deck joins the hull? I have never built the kit, but I have seen the parts, and the anticipation of that seam gave me pause

Si, what a great little kit this is, I have fond memories of building up the Jeremiah O'Brien.

It was my first blog here on MSW which you can find here. As Chuck mentioned the fit isn't all that good in some areas, but with a bit of work, the deck seams will soon disappear as will the seam between the upper and lower hull.

It was also one of my first feature articles which if you wish to have a look for more reference it's here.

Be careful with how you position the booms, as many modellers have them in the raised position whilst at sea, but that is not correct, as you would rightly know. If at sea they should be down, but if raised, then they should be tethered to the deck to stop them swinging about. All old news to you though mate.

Really looking forward to seeing a Liberty ship in something other than grey!

Hi Chuck,

Welcome aboard, The fit of the bow bow & stern sections of the deck is not too bad at all, the seams across the deck will need a little careful filling, but the old masking tape method should work.

The worst join so far is between the upper & lower hull, that one requires more in the way of sanding, but I reckon it will be ok.

welcome aboard Russ,

Thanks for the direction to your build, the hull join I have already found out about. Will no doubt be an interesting read.

Welcome aboard Mark,

Hope you are making plenty, this may take a while, a few changes to make, and I will be digging all my old seamanship books for setting up the derricks.

Hi Russ,

I did take a look at that set, and very good it is too, also L'Arsenal too, I went down the Eduard Route because some of the walkway & cargo handling parts on it are more appropriate for a post war version.

Finally, time to post last weekend's update.

Filler going on the hull sides.

After much sanding. The finish is left a little rough to help with the effect of a hard worked Merchant ship.

The deck seems given the same treatment.

And sanded.

A coat of Halford red primer on, this has sealed filler the hull, and will be the Anti fouling.

next job, the black on the upper hull. a couple thing further research has dredged up, the deck colour was more likely a light grey, and superstructure decks were also at least partially planked.

try and get some more work done & another update before Christmas.

Cheers

Si,

Nice start, remind me of when I started that kit. Did you or will you script lines to merge the deck sections together?

Simon: Did I read you correctly? The Halford's red is a filler/primer?????

I have used filler/primer before, but have never seen it in red. Of course we don't have Halford's here in the Colonies.

Hi Chuck,

Sorry of I mislead you, I used Halford's red all purpose primer, Halfords is one of the UK's largest Auto parts (and a few other things) retailers.

Their primers are really designed for use on cars, but being acrylic they work well on plastic, and I haven't come across a model paint that reacts badly with them. (and they are better value for money than most Model company rattle cans). I would be surprised if there wasn't a US equivalent.

Thanks for looking in.

Oh there is a US equivalent. I use Dupli-Color red in the same way you use the Halford's red primer.

There are primers though that advertise themselves as filler-primer, meaning they are designed to fill in the rough areas left by sanding.

Your comment about all the sanding you did on the hull, then mixed in the primer led me to believe you had found a red filler-primer.

You are doing a heck of a job on that old tub, and I am following closely.

Hi Russ,

And on a fair few of the kits with horizontally divided hulls I have built. still the sanding can be therapeutic.

We received the finally approved plans for the destruction and rebuild of the old garage today. Work should start early in the new year.

A little progress last weekend.

The lower hull masked off.

And the upper hull sprayed black.

The propeller fitted.

No.1 hatch built and test fitted, all the moulded detail will come off, and be replaces with etch.

so I don't get confused as to which hatch is which.

I doubt I will much time at my little work table before Christmas, but you never know I might get lucky
