Further to this news writers report on the 2010 Shizuoka Hobby Show Dragon Models have released more detailed information on the impending release of their 1/350 German Battleship Scharnhorst 1943 Smart Kit.

The most exciting news is that this kit will be released in July 2010.

The retail price on pre order has been advised as US$139.95 inclusive of a free 1/700 Dragon kitset. This pre order offer is available at Dragon Models USA.

This latest kitset from Dragon Models is the result of 18 months of intensive work.

We understand that the lower hull is made as a single piece via slide molds, and the accurate hull includes the correct undercut shapes.

We also understand that the deck fits perfectly onto the one-piece hull, with a single joint line completely hidden beneath the superstructure. The deck includes fine lines representing the plank pattern, and the bridge superstructure is made to the finest possible thickness.

The bridge is also made by slide moulds so that there are no parting lines to mar this highly visible element.

The kit makes use of multimedia materials with the use of photo-etched parts. The canvas waterproof covers that fit over the guns in their turrets are made from DS in order to give the necessary flexibility and realistic texture.

The gun turrets, made by slide moulds, are fully detailed, with even their riveted construction depicted.

This kit represents the Scharnhorst as it appeared on its final mission in 1943.

Kit features:

  • Bilge keels are represented on lower hull by slide-molded technology;
  • Waterline or full-hull version can be assembled;

There are four sheets of PE included, but the railings were left our to keep the cost down below a specific threshold, from what I've been told.

I'd sooner have had the PE railings instead of all the other fiddly bits. So we are now expected to rush out and spend another $40 or so on PE railings now.? At least any included railings would have made the kit look more complete once built. Judging by the online pictures thus far, my guess is that many of the already included PE won't be seen once finished. A ship kit like this without railings just doesn't look finished. I can't help thinking that they've put the cart before the horse on this particular aspect.

plus postage & carriage charges............... The $200 Scharnhorst fats approaches...........

No matter what price they charge and what they include not all of us will be happy. I was seriously hoping for much closer to $100 for the kit, but of course that was never going to happen. But, when compared with other similar ships and what you get with her it does seem like a fair price. Now for the builders in Europe, I can never figure out the pricing strategy for over there. Since the Pound is almost double the dollar I would think the kit would be about half the US price in Pounds, but it is the same price. So that basically means almost well over double the possible price. Sure there might be some import laws that cause this, but it sill makes no sense. After seeing the Prinz Eugen and its price the Scharnhorst price is very fair. Compared to other battle wagons the price is also fair and I am sure there will be deals to be had after the initial wave of buying has died down. I hardly ever do a pre-order, but I did on this one. I am 100% looking forward to seeing this kit in person and I cannot wait until she arrives in about a month from now, if the original time table still stands.

I got mine from Freetime for $129.95 plus $8.95 postage so add the railings and it comes in just at $150. Sure I wish it could be less, but i also coughed up $225 for the Akagi then another $250 for PE and wood decks and more Kates. If you want to play with the big boys, you gotta run with the pack. otherwise do 700 scale...smaller cheaper and still pretty darn good.
JUN 23, 2010 - 08:09 AM
The omitted railings are available at Dragon Models USA's website for $20. If you buy them at the same time as the Scharnhorst kit you get them for only $10.

Well said Sean. Couldn't agree more, Steve. This is RETAILING for $100 more than the Nagato, Ise and Kongo, and by all accounts, it's going to be as good, if not better, of a kit. I, for one, can't wait for it to arrive.
