Dave,
I'd like to add my kuddo's to your Sampan builds. Very nice painting, extremely realistic looking wooden structure. You're doing Great, Mate, Continue On !!! Keep building, Bruce

Am I suppose to post the in progress shots here, or start a blog?

Hi Dave

I am happy for build pics to be posted here as people can just scroll through and have a look at what we are doing even if they are not aware that this a build campaign. Is that ok with you?

BTW. I agree that wood is deadly!

All the best

PS I Did try smuggling the kit, some glue and a scalpel into the case but alas, I was rumbled by the missus!

Ahoy Crew,
Just wanted to show all there is some progress being made on the "Mini-PBR" build. One photo is attached below showing some clean-up has been performed, along with some new build. The "Cockpit" plates and position are starting to go in, as well as the armor plate for the mid gun positions. I still have an extremely long way to go, but we'll see how this project does or doesn't come out. The forward gun turret is actuallt 7/16" brass tubing cut down. Enjoy.....................Bruce

Hey all,

I just recieved my USS Montrose today so I can get to work. Its a blast from the past, the kit was made in 1966. She was part of River assault squadren 11.

First off, Hello to everyone here as this is my first post. This topic is my all time favorite to model and I was quite excited to get to work. I had a PBR about 40% done when my wife got orders to South Korea about 4 months ago. Well, my things arrived here in the ROK and the box with the PBR was smashed flat and the boat is in about 1000 pieces. No hope of repairing it. Also lost in the crush was a Revell Saratoga(CV60)- that I bought back in '88 not long after my last cruise on the old girl- and some misc parts and extra's. So I'm back to square one. I'll have to order a new PBR and get back to work.

Happy Modeling

Welcome Aboard Doc,
I think you'll find you've thrown in with a Great Crew. This crew is extremely talented and always willing to lend advice with techniques or data. Plus for a few of us Ole Codgers, they are extremely patient with those us who are "Computer Challenged".
So sit back.relax, and enjoy. Semper Fi ......................Bruce

Thanks for the welcome. This old sailor appreciates it. Modeling doesn't seem to be too popular here on the Korean peninsula. I haven't even found a place to buy glue and paint in the Osan area. I need to check with the BX and see if they do special orders.

Cheers,
Doc

Ahoy Crew,
It has been awhile for any build update with this campaign, so here's a pic of the "Mini-PBR". The project is coming along slowly but it really is an enjoyable build.

There's no doubt it will not be a masterpiece, but hopefully it will look like a PBR. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. At present, I'm leaning towards a dockside scene with at least 1 figure for scale, any comments ? Semper Fi...............................Bruce

P.S. How about everyone else's builds ?

Hi All
Back from hols, had a lovely time, even found a load of pillboxes along the coast near where we stayed!

Bruce, your PBR is so outstanding. Neatest scratchbuild of any subject I have seen for many moons. In reply to your question about progress, not much further yet!

Guys, can I ask for some advice/help with my PBR please?

I have an idea to jazz mine up a bit, and as such I would like to find a Confederate flag to put over the top of the moulded canvas, as big as possible!
Planning on calling her 'Rebel Yell'( I like listening to Billy Idol too )

Also, can anybody recommend a set of 'Nam' Dragon figures where all (or most) are in firing poses? Planning to add some passengers....

All the best
Dus

PS Were any 'silly' weapons ever mounted on PBR's? Things like 106mm recoilless rifles, vulcan 20mm gun that sort of thing?

Hi
Would a Calibre 72 Seal team LSSC supported by an ov-10 bronco of the Flying Ponies or possibly a Sea Wolves uh-1b gunship be acceptable.
cheers

I don't see why not. I worked with a vet that saw a mini gun mounted on a Mutt.

".....a little VC quality time....."

...HeyZues Christo Grumpy....thx for the deep chuckle mi amigo.

Everyone's progress so far is stunning to say the least. Sampans, PBR's, and now even the Montrose!!...sheeesh, cool stuff. And having the addition of Buckets as part of the Campaign makes it even cooler {BTW, really nice camo on your M113 there SGTJKJ }.

But...I'm not seeing any converted LCM's, Monitors, CCB's or, my beloved Tango Boats so far ................{whispers} ..."horrors"
Then, who am I to complain? I am one of the ones most interested in the whole 'Riverine' conflict and I haven't built a bloody thing!

Somebody slap me.

Even though I have my Riverine arty barge on the bench {slow with the scratchbuilding endeavours}, I have been one of the buggers with the loudest mouth about these unique craft....I guess I better 'belly up' and build something.....................

Keep up the superb work fellas.

Tread.

Howdy wildspear,

The Arty 'boat' I'm building is actually a barge. Or to be even more accurate, a 'Nam era version of the WWII 'rhino' barge.
It was utilized by {not part of} the Mobile Riverine Force during conflict up and down the Mekong. These barges were quite often called upon for support fire during operations because they were easily towed into position closer to the conflict than 'standard' artillery emplacements.
And, after a significant amount of researching and ferreting-out on the subject, these quasi-mobile installations were utilized for cross purposes because of their size. Amoung these purposes were mini supply posts and even makeshift medical facilities {this latter is not confirmed as yet}.

Anyways, here's a quick pic for ya..........

Tread.

PostScript: Oh, and just for the record, I have already built 3 of the 6 pontoons I originally planned on building for this { intending to build the bigger 6 X 18 configuration of barge}, but may be forced to lower my expectations and build the smaller {and pictured} 4 x 18 or 4 X 12 version of same......
And, my pontoons are built out of leftover MDF, and dense pegboard, so are made 100% FREE.
No forests were harmed {entirely reprocessed materials}, no timeclock records were forged {performed what little progress I've done at 'odd' or unproductive times}, and no wallet waistlines were threatened during the course of this project.............. ;-)

Treadhead,

That is too cool. I hope your keeping track of the steps and progress on the work your doing so we can read up on this great build. Maybe you can do a write up for the site on this build.

Hi Gordon

I must admit I was hoping to build the PBR and have time also to do something with an LCM. However, life has got more complicated of late (work mostly!) and I will have my hands full with the PBR!

Can't wait to see your barge, what scale is it?

OK Gang, I have no doubt there are some gorgious builds in progress for this campaign. How about some pics or info on your progress ? Shortly we'll be coming up on the 3 month time line for completion. And since we have a good sized crew signed up, I have no doubt there are quite a few projects in work. How about share the info guys ?

Looking forward to seeing everyone else's projects !
