Robert,
First, Thank you for the kind comment on the PBR. Next the water. I use a mixture of products. First, I crumple aluminum foil then flatten it out and glue it down. (This is to simulate relections in the water). This is then painted a very thin mixture of browns and greens (For muddy rivers, anyway). The next layer is Mod-Podge, a decopage product, this is tinted with brown lightly and spread out. Next is a layer of very lightly tinted green, then 2 layers of clear. All of this is topped off with 2-3 coats of future acrylic wax. Although this seems long and drawn out, once you do it once or twice it is no big deal. The biggest problem is mixing the tint into the Mod-podge - beware - a little goes an extremely long way.
Hope this helps. If anyone has further questions, feel free to ask. Keep building, Guys...Bruce

Hi Bruce
It looks very good indeed! I like the water, the wooden pier and of course, the PBR!
Although a simple composition it is very well planned and the curved base, gives it another dynamic!
I would add a little more exotic kind of vegetation, that can be easily accomplished with alumium foil (like the one you have used on the first layer for the water) - check it here
It's A Jungle Out There! Hope this helps makes you little dio even better

Cheers,
Skipper

Rui,
Thank you for the comments, and especially the tip on the palm fronds. This could be an extremely interesting use for the aluminum foil. I will definitely give that a try.
Although I think I'll take a break before getting into another diorama. I have several ideas running around in my head, so we'll see which I can actually get some good reference material on. Thanks again, Bruce

Ahoy Crew,
Well, it took quite a bit longer than I planned, but my entry is completed for the Riverine build. The majority of the photos are in the completed file, but a few are attached here. Please feel free with any criticism. And lets see how everyone else's projects are coming !
No criticism mate, only Praise. Well done Bruce!
Brilliant build and great 'muddy' water.
Cheers

PS I think there was a site run by a guy called Dan Blackenship (I think?) about the
LSSC. I will see if I have the link lurking anywhere still.

Great build, Bruce. Especially considering the small scale.
I worked on my M113 semi submerged yesterday and for once had some success with creating water. Pictures will follow.

I'm sure that not all of the rivers were muddy!
Looks good Jesper, did you use plaster underneath the gel water?
BTW Did you find that the gel water crept up the side of the M113 as it settled? I noticed this with my LVT and had to pull it out a bit when it had almost set to overcome it.
Ciao

Yes, I used some plaster with rocks, leaves, branches etc. as the bottom of the river/stream.
I had the opposite problem of you. Due to the surface tension of the gel it did not go all the way to the sides of the base and is half a millimeter or so lower at the edge of the base. On the sides of the M113 there does not seem to be a problem.
Here are the pictures of the finished diorama. I had to go through a lot of stuff and catastrophes to get this far with the water. I am pleased with the result even though I would have liked to have created waves etc. around the M113. Anyway, that will be for the next project.
It was fun participating in a "wet" campaign with you guys and I have learned a lot about what to do and not to do when creating water.
Now what about a amphibious landing campaign that involves air, sea, and land forces in the same style as this one

That would unite the forums even more

You have come up with a great entry Jesper, especially as you had to rebuild it after the water problem.
I like the amphib campaign idea, don't know whether it would come under this area or Armorama?
Might be a good idea to drop Gunny a line and see what he thinks?
Cheers

Thanks for the comment, Dus. I appreciate it.
I was thinking about a campaign that involved all forums except modelgeek, but it might be too ambitious. A campaign with figures from amp. landings, aircraft that provides air cover, the navy supporting and of course amp. landing vehicles etc.
Maybe a little too ambitious......

Gents,
It's been extremely quiet on this campaign for a while, maybe we just need to stoke the embers a little. So how is everyone's builds doing ? We need to get some more finished products into the photo gallery.
I really enjoyed my build, and have since started on my "No Guns Allowed" entry, so we'll see how that one comes out. But in the meantime, there are plenty more Riverine subjects needing to be added to our gallery. ....So what say ye, Crew ? Take it easy, Bruce

Hey guys and hello from the UK.
Im a newbie to this forum, and Gunny directed me here to this thread, as I am just about to start the Revell 1/48 swift boat and have been collecting my sources and info etc but was looking for a little help and maybe some ideas where i can find some aftermarket sets, anyone could advise, or maybe some build advice?
Thanks for sharing your work, its the kick up the backside ive been waiting for

Hello Andy
Good to have you aboard.
Must say that I haven't come accross any etch details for the Revell Swift boat. Maybe an American company produces it?
I think the unusual scale for a ship might be the problem.
If i come accross anything I will get back to you.
All the best

Thanks and good to hear from you.
The upside of the scale is the compatability of using figures and other hardware available but as you say finding any refinements isnt going to be easy, guess ill have to pull my finger out and get scratch building!

Time extension?
I have been approached and asked if the campaign might be extended for a little longer.
I personally would benefit from this as my modelling time lately has taken a hammering 'cos of work
So, what do guys say?
Can you reply on here if you do want more time AND give me an idea of what might be an acceptable new end date.
Thankyou

I'll fess up I was one of the people that asked sahariana for a time extension. With the holidays and all I was hopeing to get an extension of one or two months. This would give me the needed time to complete my build.

Time extension? Yes please me too - End of March 2008? Work these last two months has been frantic and I've still got tons to do...
Rich
I see a red door and I want it painted dark olive, dry brushed in sand and add some etched brass while you're at it, please. Failing that, paint it black...

Thanks Frank and Rich for your feedback, Anybody else got any suggestions on how long?
Sit rep on my build is that I am ready to undercoat and then scrathbuild a new canvas roof for the PBR. Hopefully over Christmas...

Dus,
Build is going slow right now. I'm not happy with how my lift arms came out in my scratch build forray. I might have to give it another try, for what ever reason I used the lift arm provided in the kit as a guide then when I looked at a reference photo it just didn't look the same.....imagine a photo of the ship not looking like the kit that was made in the 70's....

Hi Frank
Yeah, I imagine it would bug you if the part looks wrong (it would me).
I will give it a bit longer for you guys to give your opinions before I set a new end date with the boss (Gunny).
Merry Christmas to you all chaps.

Hello everyone,
I started finally on my entry for the Riverine build. It's a Monogram 1/48 F6F-5 hellcat and will be in French Navy markings from the 1950’s. I just finished primering the kit tonight.

Sincerely,
Brian

Hi Brian
Good to see your progress, we have had the finish time extended to the end of March so you have plenty of time.
Is that a carrier based aircraft?
