I was looking at all the many choices to play with for this one... I would've loved to do a Virginia, but alas, the USN elected to build her too late. Then I was looking around some more, and got a silly but entertaining idea. I'm already scratching a Suffren (D 602) for the Cold War Tin Cans build, and while looking at what's on the plans hard drive, and what campaigns I'm signed up for, I saw an interesting coincidence I'm also signed up for the Cruisers of the 20th Century build. The French thoughtfully built 3 ships named Suffren that fit nicely into the categories. So I'm looking at Suffren 1899 for PreDreads, Suffren 1926 for the Cruisers build, and Suffren 1962 for the Tin Cans. Obviously, the only one building right now is the Tin Can, but it might be fun to do a meta-theme into my builds

i have been kicking around doing the first nuclear task force 6th fleet,in 1/350 scale.still looking for all of the ships.
thanks for joining this campaign, and i cannot wait to see your 3 ships.when you get them done are they going to be put together in 1 dio?
cheers,
Bruce

Hi Bruce, I'm not sure... I'm working in 1/144, so while it'd be cool to have the 3 Suffrens in formation, that'd be a huge dio. Maybe if I had my own museum

And yes, I will be up to my armpits in projects for a year, I love to scratchbuild! The hulls will either be fiberglass over wood, or molded fiberglass if I feel like making the molds (not sure how much demand there is for Suffern hulls

Pre-dred? I'd love to, and looking at my possiblities I've got HMS Prince of Wales - Combrig, 700, Jane d'Arc - Comrig 700, and a Borodino class Imperator Alexandr - Combrig, 700.

Of these my best referenced is PoW but I wanted to portray this as a troop transporter at Dieppe - would this not count as a dio - or do I need special planning permission from MSW?

I'll see what what else is available.

Aye, Mr. Fulgoney, welcome to the build!

I've sent Bruce a pm about your question, in case he misses this Peter, and since Bruce is the leader of this campaign, it's his call on rules....

hello Peter,
i messed up and did not put in the rules and regs that dio's are allowed.multiple builds are also encouraged.i will send Mark to change the rules to show all of this.
thank you for pointing this mistake out to me.
cheers,
Bruce

Cheers, Bruce, this is very helpful not only because the pre-dreds are small ships in general.

Also I have the Russian Osylabya on the subs bench so that now is also a favourite. As I mentioned though it's easier to have a subject that is properly referenced.

Thanks for your advice.

Those would be the stacks, torpedo tubes, and cowl vents, mate...

Don't let resin, PE, and white metal scare ya mate...different media, different methods, but nothing that we can't help you out with...........

hello Mark,
thanks for the vote of confidence,i was looking for a build that was unique, and i think i found it.
it only took me 9 months looking at 40+ web stores to find it.and at Flagship Models webstore Rusty has 11 cd's on differant subjects with 2 of them by 1 of our shipmate.so they are now on my to buy list.
cheers,
Bruce

Wellll.... Since the time for this operation is fast approaching, I think I'll take the plunge with the 1/700 French armored cruiser, Dupuy de Lôme.

Amazingly, I'm not doing something Japanese. But seeing as how Japan didn't really build any of their own stuff in the Pre-Dread era, I'll go with the country that really pushed the boundaries, France. I love French design work, from their girls, to their cars, to their tanks, to their ships. The Dupuy de Lôme is the epitome of jeune école!

I'm also toying with the idea of maybe using the 1/700 model as a basis for scaling up to produce a scratchbuilt model in 1/192 or 1/96 scale... We'll see.

I have two nice Combrig Russins ships and just cannot decide.

First up is the Imp. Ekaterina Velikaya. I love the 4 turrets and she also has a bow crane that is totally unique.

OR we have Sisoy Velikiy. I have some better reference material on this ship.

Decisions can be such a pain at times.

I'm going to have to reassess my pre-dreadnought campaign choice. I originally wanted to do the Varyag cruiser, but in the chaos that is my life these days, I started her prematurely and for another campaign! So as far as this campaign goes, my choices are limited to a few Seals Models kits. I might search PacificFront and see what else fancies me.

hello Frank,
how much have you got done?if not over 10%-15% built,i am willing to let you use that model for the campaign.that way you do not have to spend money for a new kit.unless you want to.

Thanks Bruce, but I'll keep the Varyag in the cruiser campaign and start a new model for the pre-dreadnought....

hello Harry,
the rules state that you may build any Warship 1866-1905.the Shinano Maru was a merchant ship before the IJN took here over and made her an aux cruiser.
but with her famous history (first IJN ship to find the Russian Fleet) i am going to allow it.
cheers,

Well darn, I just got an email from Bill Gruner saying the Dupuy de Lome isn't in stock and to try again in a couple weeks. Now I'm torn between waiting to see if comes in stock or to build something else. Decisions, decisions...

I hate when that happens. Just when your mind is made up that happens.

I think I have my ship decided on, the Russian Pre-Dread Sissoy Velikiy. Now, do do her in white or black?

I decided to go with one of my other choices of French builds and build the Charles Martel. I still wanna build the Dupuy de Lome sometime, but this way I've got a solid project in time- I made sure to call Mr. Gruner this time to confirm this was in stock.

With the Martel and her sisters, you can see the beginning of the design that developed into the Tsesarevitch and even the Borodino. Plus, by being a battleship, the Martel is a true pre-dread- as opposed to the de Lome, which as a cruiser, technically wasn't.

hello all,
@Dade.
interesting choice,i have found very little in the books at my house (i have a full set of Jane's ships in storage, published in 1910 i think).can you tell me some of her history and ship/class data?thanks.
@Jim,
are you going to build her for the turn of the century?if so,some of the info i have on the paint colors were:black hull, white upper works, yellow funnels with black tops.not sure what the deck colors were, but i will keep looking.if you are going to build her for the Russia-Japanese War,she would have been painted all gray.hope this helps.
cheers,
Bruce

ahoy mates, thought you might like to see my scratchbuilt Knayaz Suvoroff. It's aproximately 1/100th scale. It was built behind the Iron Curtain 20 years ago or so and was a radio control battle ship which was able to fire BB's at an opposing vessel.
