Hi Guys

Long time no see...

It's been a long spring, summer and early autumn - house-move related home improvements have kept me away from modelling; hence my no-show on the post-war destroyer and Th century cruiser builds, sorry.

However, things are looking up, my wife and I are now settled here in Surrey and my fantasy workspace is nearing completion. So, I'm planning to join my shipmates on this build. I hope to go with Cambric's HMS Triumph c.1915 just before she was sunk in the Dardanelles strait. Looking forward to this one - my first fleet exercise here at MSW.

Cheers

Karol

hello Karol,
the ship you want to build is in the time line, but i think that the build would be better off in the WW1 Warship Campaign, which deals with anything to do with the WW1 Naval War.that campaign starts May 15,2009 and it is not that far away.i love the idea of your build, but with this campaign i am trying to show the grace and beauty of the PreDread ships.

but to be fair,i will let everyone decide if your build should be in this campaign,
please let me know what you think about this build?
cheers,
Bruce

Hi Bruce

Sorry, perhaps I should have been clearly in my original post; HMS Triumph is most definetely a pre-dred battleship.

She was originally commissioned for the Chilean Navy in 1901. Whilst fitting out (I think), it became clear that the original owners couldn't/ wouldn't be able to afford her (or her sister HMS Swiftsure). Consequently, the Admiralty quickly bought both ships for fear that they would be bought by either France or Imperial Russia. Both ships were very fast and well armed, for their time, and would have posed a (perceived) threat to the Royal Navy.

Sadly inspite of the hype, neither ship had a glorious career with the RN; they were classified as Second Class battleships and after a brief stint with the Channel Squadron were subsequently mothballed. HMS Triumph (strangely) ended up in the Far East, where she was finally given the opportunity to shine when war started. Her first stab at glory was the successful (but bloodless) capture of a German colony on the Chinese mainland. She would later be deployed to the Dardenelles (to bombard Turkish ground positions (forts)), which is where she met her end (sunk by an U-Boat).

I suggested (in my original post) building her during her 'final' days as I thought this might be interesting - there doesn't appear to be anything in the Build rules to prevent showing a pre-dred after 1905; as many served/ survived beyond 1905 that would be reasonable, don't you think? If you're unhappy with that I'm more than willing to build her in pre-1905 fit.

Please don't take this as any form of slight, or as an object history lesson - we can't expect you to know every warship commissioned during this period.

Cheers

Karol

Sorry Bruce

I should of mentioned - neither the Triumph nor the Swiftsure were substantially modified during the lives. The objective of maintaining the grace and beauty of pre-dreds (if that's not a contradiction) would still be met (I think).

Anyway, I'll let you guys decide.

Cheers

Karol

Indeed, HMS Triumph justly qualifies for this campaign, gentlemen...but Bruce must make the final decision, as the campaign leader on this one...

hello all,
we have 3 for the idea.
i was hoping that this campaign would show the ships before the cold ,gray, impersonal warships that showcased most of the 20th century naval wars.
to me the Predread's were ship's of grace and beauty, the Victorian era of ship building.most have a mix of so many different calibers of guns, power plants, and new technology that would evolve into the Battleships,Aircraft Carriers, etc.
it was an age of the "little" War,Grand Naval Reviews with the colorful ships,a new Century of Hope.
i have read up on the HMS Triumph, and she does fit in the letter of the rules, but to me, the proposed dio is not in the spirit of the rules.
this is why i have reservations about Karol's build and think it would be better in the WW1 Warship campaign, but i will let the members decide if it is OK.and i will abide by their decision.
cheers,
Bruce

OK mates, we're like what, five days out from the start of this campaign?....and I have to tell you, I'm stoked...this campaign is a golden opportunity to bring to light these vessels, and discuss and learn about them as well throughought the various builds...I personally have been digging hard into my build research, and really enjoying it...almost there, mates!

I too am looking forward to this build. The more I study this time period of ships the more I fall in love with them. They are so unique and have so much personality. I am just hoping I can get my ship built and have it look decent. My build will be the USS Chicago. Of the recent Chicago’s recently shown, I have not been impressed with many of them.

So with that said, it will be soon time to start and I look forward to it!

This campaign will be interesting indeed.

The transition to steam and steel, the Spanish American War, the Russo-Japanese War, the gilded decor...as soon as my Pearl Harbor scene is completed the Iowa and Oregon are going on the ways!

I'm looking forward to getting my Royal Sovereign. Unfortunately, my reference on this ship is limited to a few grainy photos. I'll look for guidance from the knowledgable folks here at MSW.
