Dipping the lug is when the yard is dipped around the mast when going about so that the sail draws away from the mast on each tack.

At first I thought it was about chiefs sitting in the chiefs mess eating doughnuts.

You are right Jim ! (about the sail not the chief's mess...lol)

Here's a typical lug sail rig (variation on a gaff rig)

I was minding my own business when a bunch of bad people took me. I have been held against my will ever since.

I now spend my time a long way from Wisconsin where I was born. My captors have said I can go home if certain things are done, but my leaders will not negotiate to get me back.

I was moved to a new home recently. Now I am treated like an animal in a zoo.

Who/What am I?

Okay, here goes...

" I was a ASW weapons system used on cold war Canadian ships and when in hunting and firing mode, I would sway back and forth compensating for the pitch and roll of the ship. What am I?"

Hint:
"I was a British development installed on RN ships and ships of other commonwealth navies including Canada. I was used in combat probably for the first time in the Falklands."

Yes sir, you're correct!

I don't know which made sailors more seasck, the rough waves or watching the limbo barrels in the deck well move around wildly compensating for the roll and pitch. Absolutely nauseating to watch but once you became transfixed with the movement, you'd usually had it and needed to lie down.....or put your face into the spray...

Here's a pic...

I was the first of my kind in the US Navy. Prior to me they used different terms for the same thing, because the US Navy wanted to break with traditions of European Navies. I was granted this term because of my actions in a famous battle. I served my country for 60 years.

I have been honored in many ways , including two postage stamps and 6 ships to carry on my name.

What/Who am I?

I was looking up spies in the academy, not admiralty.

Time to start over.
