hello Peter,
looking great i like your water, are you going to do a feature on how you do it? with the Divine water Campaign starting soon,if would help the ones(like me) who do not do water effects.
cheers,
Bruce

Hi, Bruce, Mark asked me to do the water methodology some time ago now so it must be in an archive somewhere, however the method is explained in the early stages of this build. Having said that, there are still things I would want to do to improve the Averoff build. Don't forget that in real life it looks a lot different. The art is to have good photos and reality at the same time.

Cheers,

Peter F

Here we are then with the final batch of pictures before the Easter break, and they show my attempt at rigging using the Caenis fishing line together with paper/stationary glue.

I try to cut the strands to length to save cutting afterwards, however, the method I have used to tidy up , and as shown, is a heated pin head to burn off the excess. This actually does work but all due caution should be given a all the elements of this routine have potential dangers. Treat everything with respect, and have a good Easter.

Fine rigging is difficult to see, and if that is the case then I have suceeded. The next stage is to tighten it all up which comes next...............

Hey Peter

For tightening the Cenis line...

do try using the smoke method--as I do in stretched sprue.
Unlike the needle the heats source is constant- so you dot keep having to remove the workpiece to free up hands to relight etc etdc
have a peek here: it shows the method of smoke

Averoff is looking good!

Nice to hear from you, Jim, and what I meen by using the needle is to finish off overlong ends, and not just tighten them up, and so........

over Easter, I've finished the rig, and tightened up the slack with an insence stick - photos to follow!

Peter. F

Hello, Peter!
By scoring another 23 points on the March progress evaluation you have taken the leaderboard for good!
Congratulations for winning the contest!
Here's to the well deserverd winner not only by putting up a great shown and extraordinary modeling effort, but as a role model of consistancy over such a long period of time!

I am sorry for not being able to put up a better fight this time around! Next time...

Guido, you are very kind but it appears that I won by having the least commitments. A year is a long time in which everything can happen, and does.

I beleive your prize will be at Telford, so that gives you another 6 months or so to complete, so, best wishes for that, and best wishes to my fellow modellers who are heading for the finish line. Like another other marathon, its taking part, and completing that is so satisfying.

BTW, Guido, are you still on the same email I use to contact you off site?

Cheers to all

Peter F

OK, it starts with what looks like a bit of a mess but actually its the start of one end of the rig which is stuck in place and allowed to dry. The glue doesn't take that long so it's all done very quickly.

As I mentioned, the rig is tightened with hot smoke. There are breakages so its a question of doing the broken sttands again...........next time.

1 x feast of rigging in place!

HI Peter - Looks great! I especially like the photo with your hands in it. It really gets across the scale of the model and how skillful you've been with all that delicate work. Congratulations on a terrific build. Barry

Cheers, Barry, thanks for the encouragement.

So, now its forward with the crew figures. There's still some rig to add but so fine that it won't pick up on the photographs, you'll have to beleive I'm doing it!

Outstanding work Peter, the rigging is spot on. You've given us an amazing tutorial which will be revisited over and over. Thank you for your perseverance and for the step by step lessons.

To end this month, I have started on the crew figures, and await some feedback on uniform appearance from my Greek friends. I think that the colour would have been white, and I hope this is the case as they will stand out well with the grey backgrounds.

I have selected the "usual suspects lineup" off the Gold Medal Models fret, and given them all a wash in paint cleaner to prime them up. The problem with pe figures is that they are all flat, and dietary habits may have been better in those days but they can end up looking like Ginger Bread Man from "Shrek". To try and avoid this, it is necessary to give them some bulk and so a coat of pva - or two helps give them a more three dimentional look.

Also, when the colour has been sorted - white - I will use acryllic paint like tootpaste to finish off the effect.

Finally, the greeks in the Indian Ocean will have a good tan if not naturally olive brown and so the nearest colour in my oil paints box will be administered in appropriate dollops.

Then, to place them all aboad - next.................

Peter F

Next month I will be finishing up, and completing the photshoot to include my two techniques - hopefully. And, its the final month but what of month 13??? The ship will be finished as far as the competition is concerned but you didn't think I would be finished with it, did you?

I will have three x images of crew which will be posted shortly but in the meantime, and to conclude the build, I will be doing live photography at the Lancing West Sussex UK Model Show on Saturday 16th May. This will be the indoor version of the photoshoot, and will be followed by my second method of presentation - which I prefer, which will be the open air shoot.

This second method involves going down to the beach - there's nothing like the real atmosphere, and taking shots holding the ship up to the sky for full cloud and daylighting effect.

These posts should both be on the site next week - subject to weather with the second method, and I look forward to sharing my finale with you all
