One more question. I'm still deciding on what to build. Do we have to build a kit or can someone scratchbuild a carrier from styrene for the build to count? I've been considering scratching out a IJN Ryuho.

Morning all (or at least it is in the Rockies where I am)!
This sounds like just the excuse I've been looking for! Now, what should I do? Choices:
Enterprise CV-6 Midway 1/350 Trumpeter Hornet plus Nautulus conversion and deck
Shokaku 1/350 Fujimi kit
Illustrious 1/400 Heller with WE brass and bridge.
Hmmmm... Well, at least I've got some time to think about it!!

If anyone is interested in the Heller 1:400 British WW II British carriers, I have a pair of the Illustrious and a Majestic for sale.

I think I would like to be on this one. I have the Trumpeter 1/700 Yorktown and the Dragon 1/700 Hancock - think I'll go with the Hancock as it has a much simpler scheme to paint for a naval novice like myself

Gunny,
I have glued together the hulls of my 1/350 Lexington, Shokaku and Enterprise. I have also filled the bow of the Enterprise with resin and ground the shape down to make it look a little more correct.
Does this work put these models out of the running for the group build?

Gentlemen,
I don't know how long I have been looking at this thread pondering participation. I have to say that I do not really like flat tops, even though I have a soft spot for some examples of that type of ship. Anyway, ever since I re-started modelling 10 years ago I did make only one carrier. I have plenty in my stash, but I never got around to build another. I think, the major reason is that the least of things I like about modelling is excessive repetitive work such small AA on Yamato. A carrier looks really cool with a deck full of planes, but all that repetitve work? It scares the sweet bejesus out of me! On top of it I'll have to build a whole lot of AA for almost any carrer, too. I'd always fear that I can't finish it.
Now within the last 18 months ever since I joined MSW, I really got to like the idea of the campaign building, as it pulls me for- and onward in the building process. So I finally I got my act together and joined the show. Let's see, if I can get a carrier built within one year.
Concerning Non-US and Non-IJN there wasn't any recommendation for the HMS Biter (1/700 L'Arsenal) or HMS Colossus (1/700 L'Arsenal) which I should add at this point.
Lot's of choices in my stash: USN, IJN, RN and ... Free Frensh Forces.
Of cause I again tend to do something off the beaten path so I will most like build the
1/400 Bearn of L'Arsenal.
As she was rated as too slow for fleet duty, she served as a plane transport during WWII on convoy duty. Her history is far from spectacular, but I believe hat the kit at hand is very nice and deserves to be build.

Hey Guido, if sparse AA fittings is your thing, anything from the Royal Navy in the first half of WW2 will work--the RN was always behind the power curve on AA firepower in that conflict, so a British carrier from 1939-42 will be rather light in the flak department.
--Karl
P. S. The Bearn will be an excellent subject to model. I hope the references are adequate.

... I'll still have to do a deckload of planes, even with a RN carrier from behind the curve
The references are quite sparse. I hope Jacques will be able to recommend some stuff. The cool thing about the late Bearn is that she comes in a measure camo. I never did one before. It'll be a challenge.
I am off to meet with a club friends in Hamburg over the weekend to plan the next year's shows, visit some museums, take a harbour tour, etc.
Now you all go and build a model!
Guido
PS.: Thanks Neil, I'll do my very best!

Ahoi everyone,
I did not decide yet what specific carrier or scale I will do. This is first time for me participating at all.
The one year time frame gives me hopefully enough space to finish something worthy.
Could someone please guide me on where to post the WIP when all gets started?
Thanks for the patience.

Nice to see you onboard Dariush!
I was planning to build my Saratoga with all of the bells and whistles, but dang I am not sure I will have the ability to do it. So, I might build the Hiryu, ala Mr. Bell.
I need to win the lottery so I can retire and build models full time!!

Hope to get a lot of inspiration (and perhaps help) from Frank and Renato.
Looking forward to get started on this project .... better order the remaining PE and woodendeck

@Jim: Thank you for the nice words.
Saratoga, yes, some bells are ringing here.
Is it the Trumpeter 1/350 kit?
Sure worth the effort. No matter the scale or you do it in this campaign - you may be interested in this:
USS Saratoga (CV-3): An Illustrated History of the Legendary Aircraft Carrier 1927-1946 by John Fry (ISBN 978-0764300899).
Do not look for too much technical reference in there but be prepared for a load of high quality pictures throughout, answering most model builders questions.
NTK Hiryu is one of a kind CV to work on as well. However, also one with sparse detailed pictures. There is a Profile Morskie on the subject. Also of interest is this one book: The Imperial Japanese Navy No.3, ISBN 4-7698-0453-9, pages 214-232 - hard to find and all text in japanese with english captions only for the pictures.
Whatever you decide, good luck with it.
@David: Thank you for pointing me to the right direction. I yet have to figure how to post in there.
@all:
Best of wishes to everyone.

Guys,
I think I'm leaning towards Enterprise using the Trumpy 1/350 Hornet, but as mentioned above I've already glued the hull bottom and top together, filled the bow with resin, and ground it down to a little more correct shape. Is it cheating to use this kit if I don't do anything else to it before January?
Thanks, really starting to look forward to it!
Michael

Dariush,
Yes, my Sara is the Trumpeter kit. I want to do her in her pre-war look and fit. If I go with doing her I will have to give my work bench a good old fashioned cleaning. Thank you for the heads up on the books my friend.
Michael,
If you are looking at the Enterprise you will really love a project I am currently working on with one of our members. Look for it early in January.

This is an easy one: http://nautilusmodels.com/ I have their Hornet deck and their Enterprise/Yorktown deck. Excellent products!
