Except for slicing the occasional tuna, not much I would guess. I wonder if Italeri got the dimensions correct? I seem to remember seeing a drawing of a similar hull form with a larger 'fin'. Al

July 25th update:
Underwater hull sprayed and weathered. The first Kingfisher is in progress and the aft mast is now under construction:

I think the weathering is fitting, not too dilapidated

Thanks Simon, the trick with the masking liquid works again.
Still wondering how to make a stand to put this monster on.
Cheers,
Julian

Julian, this is turning out to be another stunning build! Impressive. I wish I had the time to work as much on my models as you seem to have... My Indie is still nowhere and won't for another month or two as we're moving to a new place...

Keep it up!

Cheers!

Good morning Stef,
Thank you very much, glad you like the build so far
The underwater hull was painted as follows:
First a layer of Vallejo grey ground.
A layer of Vallejo Panzer Aces Track ground colour.
The trick with the sponge and the masking liquid.
A layer of Lifecolour schiffsbodemfarbe rot.
A good clean up with a stiff brush to remove the masking.
Two burnt umber oil washes.
Finally two thinned washes of AK interactive dark slimy green.
cheers,
Julian

And now for something completely different as they said on Monty Python's Flying Circus: A change of pace and venue while pondering how to make a stand for the Arizona. A quick excursion to the "Dark side". A paper panzer so that I can do nasty and very not-historical things with camo and subject. It is very very very off topic here so my apologies and my promise that these will be the only photos of my Panther II with field mounted "Jabo-panzer" on turret roof and engine vents and intakes that will be posted on a ship site and forum.

All photo etch fitted and ground paint sprayed on.
Hope to be back on track with the Arizona very shortly.
Julian

Stunning work on the Arizona Julien. I love it . I too had to have a break from doing the Hood so build this one for a change. Tamiya's 48 Scale 2 1/2 Ton. Fell together and what I needed at the time....Cheers Mark

I sure wouldn't envy anyone who was stationed in the aft fighting top, they had one helluva climb to get to their stations. She looks terrific Julian, I especially like the way you weathered the lower hull. Al

A nit-picky question here, perhaps, but in 1:200 scale it is relevant:

Would the deck part of the clover leaf and birdbath platforms in the light gray portion of the main and foremasts be the same color as well? If so, they would have been subject to scuffing from the dark-soled shoes worn by the crew and I would think the reflected sunlight from having not only bulwarks but the deck in near-white would have made standing watch up there irritating.

I have not seen a definitive photo of the decks of those upperworks with such a scheme, but think applying a deck gray would be appropriate in the absence of such documentation.

Just a thought...

Actually, I'm reasonably certain the area was covered in un-painted linoleum. No proof yet, went looking in the Pearl Harbor records earlier this year and busted. But there are color photographs of Battleship Idaho pre-war with linoleum,

Hi Mark, Kevin and Al, sorry for a rather tardy response. Just spent two weeks on holiday in Greece Thanks for the kind comments It must have been like top sport climbing all the way up to the birdbath ....................

Hi Karl, I hadn't really thought this through but you definitely have a point about the light grey paint on the birdbath deck. The crew working there would have been fried alive and snow blind from the glare up there
Thanks for the head-up
Just out of curiosity Tracy, the linoleum would have been a red-brownish colour?
cheers,

Could anyone point me in the direction of a rigging plan for the Arizona?
