Could anyone point me in the direction of a rigging plan for the Arizona?
Tia,
Julian

I believe the drawings at the back of Paul Stilwell's USS Arizona book depict some of the more prominent cables and lines aloft. I have also studied photos of the post attack wreck: you can actually see the severed cables that ran between the masts hanging from the intact mainmast down the the burned out boat deck. Also, many of the prewar photos in the Stilwell book contain shots of the rig on both masts, though you'll have to squint to see them!

Over time I've come to believe there weren't comprehensive plans by the Navy; there were actually separate "systems" that were in play. For example, I found these drawings, but they don't have any of the flag signal halyards, etc.

Update August 27th: on suggestions by Karl and Tracy I have painted the bird-bath deck a red brown colour to suggest linoleum. The MG's have had the backrest and gun-sights added from the WEM set:

Wow, Julian, that new deck really pops, and the use of a brown really sets off your other details up there. Beautiful!

Thanks Karl, I doubt if we will ever know if this is historically correct but it does break up an otherwise very blue and grey build I am glad I followed up on your remark about the light grey deck

Julian

Hi Julian,

A terrific build so far, looking great. You have the patience of a saint lol, lol. Love the detail but she will need a large cerw to make her look alive .

Excellent, just excellent work

Thanks Alan,
currently reaching that awful stage where it becomes difficult to stay focused and not get distracted by other seemingly more tasty morsels in the stash.
There aren't that many crew members included with the Arizona and they are mostly nasty little vinyl characters with big heads and hats looking like Roswell aliens in drag
cheers mate,
Julian

Hi Julian,

Yes, that's a problem with long term projects. When I got to the crew compartment in the MAS build I'd about reached that point and instead of makling some half decent seating for the bunks used those aweful sandbags lol, lol. Something that will probably haunt me to the grave lol, lol.

September 22nd update: Have been AWOL for a couple of weeks due to health and work Now back to the grindstone I have fitted the light MG's on foremast and stack platforms. The boat cradles have been fitted just forward of C turret. At the moment mass producing launches. after that it will be a long haul installing piperails and accommodation ladders :

Forgot to mention the liferafts on C turret and the paravanes on B turret, (yes, white. Probably not correct but I like the contrast and at least you now notice them ).
cheers,
Julian

Hi Karl.
Thank you very much,
Modern paints and an optivisor

Without the optivisor I can't even see the railings on the launches
I am lost without my "Viewmaster"
Cheers,
Julian

Hello Julian, I was wondering what had happened to you. Glad to see you back, and happy that you are feeling well. Those small boats look sharp. I am impressed by how cleanly you attach even the smallest photo-etch pieces. With my fumble fingers, those kind of pieces scare the heck out of me. I am not sure, but I think that on the launch, those two white painted objects forward of the midships openings were navigation lights. Maybe someone can shed more light (no pun intended) on this. You have certainly made a lot of progress and I am happy to see this thread continuing. Al

Hi Al, I am almost 100% sure that the square objects you refer to are the port and starboard navigation lights. I have given them, (and the other lumps and bumps), a coat of Vallejo liquid metal silver to draw attention to them and give some contrast. It is most certainly not an accurate depiction though, you are right on that.
cheers,
Julian

September 23rd update:
Boats, launches etc. Call them what you like, they are all fitted bringing me onto finals now for the Arizona. Tomorrow I'll spray all the pipe rails and start fitting them.:

Julian, I am still amazed by this build! The detail is fantastic! Do you even have room to display it?

Cheers!

Hi Julian!

Will you be installing tie-down stays for the boats? In 1:200, their absence would jump out at you.

Hi Stefan, yes, I have decided where to display the build. Mrs. Gremlin56 will probably take a rather dim view of the proceedings though
How did moving house go?

Good morning Karl, yes, will probably get around to that. Do you have a reference on how the lashings looked? I can't imagine they used two single cables wrapped over the entire stack.
cheers,
Julian
