Magnificent, show-stopping work, Julian!

It has inspired my plans for the 1:200 Arizonas in my brood (yes, I have more than one). Since we are now in the realm of overlapping anniversaries (American Civil War, War of 1812, both World Wars), I am organizing my diorama building and photography to coincide. Having an in-depth build log like yours is not just a treat, but another useful reference for my intended Pearl Harbor model uploads in 2016!

Do you have opportunities to publicly showcase your Arizona in Europe?

Thank you very much Karl, glad that the build log is of some use It has been a rather short journey, ( 5 months all told), but it is rather photo heavy. I am now adding the final touches, second Kingfisher, rigging, crewmen etc. and then I will fit the stand and try to find somewhere to park the Arizona.
I have no plans to put the model on display anywhere: I enjoy building big models but that also means big storage problems, (lots of my builds live in the attic )
Cheers,
Julian

Hi Julian!

I like 'em big, too. Last weekend I bagged a Graupner 1:33 Me-323 Gigant kit on the SALE table at my LHS. Good kit, but the problem is the 1.667 m wingspan. I've determined I will have to depict this big bird in flight in a violent bank so as to stow the model near vertically! I have other lengthy dioramas as well and I've decided to call it "Furniture Scale" since that's pretty much what I'm building.

To carry on, I've resorted to installing legs to the undersides of diorama bases to allow one dio to be displayed straddling above another on the same table space.

Hi Julian.

I only just found this thread and am plowing through it.

One question, have you had any experience with the Mk1 Designs Arizona set? It is not cheap but coming with wooden deck etc I am thinking of getting it for my Arizona in the stash.

Furniture scale is an excellent description Karl I must remember that one.
Glad to hear that somebody else is also attracted to the biggest boxes in the store. Freud would probably make the connection to compensating for not having enough pocket money as a child
I have just seen the biggest model box I have ever set eyes on in the local model store: Trumpies 1/16 King Tiger. I hope I can withstand the temptation

Hi Warren,
no, sorry. I went for the WEM PE set and was very satisfied with their offering.
I have no experience with after market wooden decks at all, ( Jim is sending one to me for a review). I have been following your Wingnut builds: very impressive and beautiful looking models.
cheers,
Julian

If like that one, you'll LOVE Dragon's new 1/6 M4 Sherman. How's that for a big box?

At the risk of sliding off-topic, a massive M4 is really tempting since you can do so many things with Shermans and their hulls. On board the Midway, I already have the 21st Century M5, the old Hasbro M3 halftrack, and this cast soft plastic Hetzer, all in 1:6. In fact, I call it the 41st (after the ship's hull number) Armored Division, "the most powerful armored division afloat."

Any final pics Jules? This girl came out a beaut Sir.Been awhile since I have poked my head in but have built alot of a/c of late and reading "The Rising Sun" by Toland my naval attributes are churning again. The rigging scares me on the Graf Spee need to finish her first(80%) but I am thinking PrinzEugen or the Pride of Baltimore in 1/48 wood.Give me your snail mail and I will be sure to mail the wife all purchases made in the foray of plastic to be certain you stay in hot water Cheers Sir

Hi Kevin,
This build seems like a long time back now I never got around to doing a final set of photos of the Arizona, the final effect just wasn't what I really wanted to achieve. With the benefit of hindsight a lighter colour-scheme would have worked out more suitable to my style of weathering. Still, that is how the model turned out
cheers,
JUlian
