Thanks Kenny,
Appreciate your kind words. want to get the fo'c'sle railings on next, might do that after work today, then the fun of the funnel rigging whilst I still have room manouvere before fitting the boats.

Thanks Mark & Julian,
Onward and upwards, foc's'le railings. the after sections have some interesting curves to bend in one piece, but I got there.

And fitted.

Well nearly, I did the corner down in the end.
The bow sections were easier, all straight sections. All fitted and ready to get the trained spider out to to stat on the funnel stays.

More soon.

Many thanks for your kind comments, I must admit I am aided by the quality of the Kit, which has very few vices. White Ensign's etch, Master models turned brass & the Artworks deck. All of which, so far, are combining very well.
No progree this weekend unfortnutely due to a combination of the ongoing work on the house and Dog sitting a freinds Labrador. (Labrador's tails and models do not mix!)
Hope to get some more done next weekend.
More then

Great build Simon, nice work with the bow railings. With my ham-handed touch, just looking at them scares the Bejeezus outta me.

Thanks Al,
I will admit the after sections of the foc's'le railings scared the whatsit out of me, with two curved sections in one run, but very accurately etched to fit, with all the stantions in the right place, I just took it one bend at a time.
This is the cause of the current hold up, she looks quite harmless here, but that tail is a weapon of mass destruction when she gets excited.

Her owner is back for his trip shortly, so hopefully some progress this weekend.

The Funnel rigging, and there is a lot, firstly my rigging material of choice, copper wire is straightened, by rolling under a steel rule.

The horizontal wire at mid height was added first,

Then starting from the back the stays are added, and there are quite a few.

Had to have a break after that, to save what is left of my sanity.
More soon.

Thanks Mark, I agree, funnel stays can be troublesome. In this case, the horizontal connecting the funnels made it more "Interesting".
The lower stays are completed.

The upper layer was much simpler as far the drawings I could find, and that was quite straight forward.

Before starting on the boats, I decided the 4 main guns forward of the after superstructure. The plastic barrels were cut off and the breeches drilled to accept the replacement brass barrels.
.
These were a vast improvement. the gun mounts were assembled, quite a tricky process, as the sides of the mount had one face at the front of the mount that glued, so whilst that was still soft I lined them up on the base and the barrels were part painted.

The barrels were fitted, as were the brass handwheels.

Painting of the gun barrels was completed & the guns, and the guns fitted.

Next on with the boats.

Thanks Julian,
I am pleased with them, the basic kit mounts are pretty good, but with open guns in this scale I was concerned they would be a bit bland and toy like, and with the Master barrels and WEM handwheels, they do look the part.

After somewhat of a break due continueing works on the house, which are no finished, apart from unpacking everything, I am back on the Varyag.
some work on the boats, I must say I am very impressed, especially with the pulling boats, moulded in upper & lower halves, split at the thwarts, and fitting together very well, below pics need little in the way of explaination, exceot a wash on the bottom boars to bring out the detail and the wooden decks for the steam pinaces.

More soon, I hope. Might get on with the Bridge next, after a bit of tidying up on the boats.

Work on asembling the boats is completed, and the first boats added. I retained the moulded blocks & hooks on the smaller davits, for which the WEM etch does not include repacements.

The boats have had the lashings securing them to their racks. and I have started to rig the boats to the davits.

Having had enough of the boats for the time being my next move will be to do some work on the bridge.

A break from Boatwork, The Bridge, and a minor pitfall of using accessoriees from differeing manufacturers, the WEM floor differs slighly from the gap for the wheelhouse in the Artworx decking. Bit it diesn't look too bad.

The sides are then added.

The roof is test fitted, again the wood decking for the monkey island s designed for the original plastic parts so aren't pefect for the etched parts, but look better than my attemot at painting wood.

Back to the boat rigging next
