I wasn't trying to slag you off or anything mate.. You are a master at the rigging game and I am a slack one who ignores it, mainly because I think in 1/350 it would not be visible at the distances we look at things from. But that is just me..

Cheers
Warren

Hey warren,

Didn't think you were, just my feeble attempt at a witty reply.

Seriously mate, being an old seaman I like to put some semblance of rigging on davits, cranes derricks etc, but in this scale it personal how far you go, and I wont knock any modeller that chooses to do less, or even more rigging than I do.

Heres to some good modelling in 2014

Yay verily..

They didn't expect people to stand on the top of the main turrets in a battle with the huge guns firing under them and incoming fire everywhere trying to disable the main guns.. did they??

And I thought flying jet fighters was exciting enough...

That reminds me of a poem..

The boy stood upon the burning deck,
his pockets full of crackers...

Well, yes, used to really p*** off Mrs. Gremlin56 by teaching the more "educational "ones to my sons, (now 23 and 27).
A very enjoyable one was about the young lady from Lemmer who's father was a piano tuner. I won't say anymore because it would certainly be my last performance here on MSW ...............

Sea Shanties on new years day, great way to stat the year!.

Seriously placing light guns on the top of main, and even secondary turrets goes back to the pre dreadnought era, and went on to the end of the battleship era.

Warren, you think those guys had a hairy time, imagine being on the bofors mount on top of an Iowa class main turret.

I doubt if the light guns would be manned when firing the main battery Simon, the blast would make for a very exciting experience up on top of the turret. That's why the Yamato had shields around most of the AAA positions.

No Warren, you are not even close It's really disgusting

hi Julian,

In reality I suspect you are right, the other thing, especially with Dreadnought's wing turrets, not only would you have the blast and concussion of the main guns to contend with, but 12pdr shells from the guns in the superstructure whistling past your ears.

I think it is why in ongoing refits the more exposed 12 pdrs were removed.

Onwards and upwards.

The last bit of etch added to the forward davits, this was the rope ladders for access to the bots, both stowed and swung out, and the manropes.

The small dingy has been fitted to its davits and the rigging for the whalers, started, I then realized the coaling derricks on the after end of the superstructure needed to go on first.

The whalers ready for fitting.

and fitted.

The great fun of building a kit with two add on sets is missing bits that would have been easier to put on earlier. In this case the forward pair of coaling derricks. There are four more to go on in total, two just behind the bridge wings, to two coming off the base of the mainmast. Pontos provide parts for these. Each turned brass boom needs its mount inserting into the lower end. I had a quick clean out of the mounting hole with a micro drill bit and a pin vice, the etch slides in perfectly.

Here are all four with the hinge pins fitted awaiting a squirt of TS66.

mounting plates, parts 123 from the pontos set are added to the just below the fo'c'sle deck leel at the front of the superstructure, one derrick has been fitted and glued to the rear outboatd end of the bridge wing, the other has been dropped into its mounting plate, and needs securing in it's stowed position.

A general view of where the build is at. Q and Y turrets have had their 12pdrs added and detailed as well.

Main top and after coaling derricks next.

I just love all those ships boats, youve done amazingly fine work painting them. I especially like the whalers with the long sweeps stowed inboard.

The Pontos set comes with some etched "spiders", exactly how I am going make them work I don't know. watch this space... It might be a masterclass in how not to, we shall see.
