Thank you Sean, no worries, the story will go on...I hope to get a small update up tomorrow or Wednesday...

Si, much appreciated, I'll deal with the 20mm extensively at a later update. The master Oerlikons are just great, but not that easy to build - I had more than one 'loss' over time...

For now - Cheers , first workday of the week finished,

Hi all,

a quick update, this time on the ship itself.

Hangars will be open, so first to cut out the plastic hangar doors, starting with little triangle shapes to avoid too much stress on the thin remaining frame.

Brass hangar doors from WEM:

Some work on the boat deck, mixed WEM and Eduard parts for the boat cradles.

Boats test fitted:

And a little work on the funnels:

To replace the funnel caps with PE, the PE parts have to be cut to allow for the final 3-dimensional bending:

For now - thanks for looking!

Hi Jan!

brilliant work you're doing here! I really like the way you're opening up the hangar and the secondary armament looks fantastic!

The Pom poms and the quad .50 calibres really stand out!

She's going to be a beauty when finished!

Thank you very much, Russ and Julian, that's much appreciated!

Another brief update on the story, continue with the funnels. Here's a little bit of creativity again, with the delicate funnel caps they look pretty empty. Now I would imagine that they were not empty, but rather filled with pipings from the different boilers. Not sure if that's correct, but I thought it just looks better

Detailing the paravanes

And the Walruss, I wanted one with folded wings to fit into the hangar:

However, it does not fit - either it is to big, or the hangar bay ist to small...hard to say...

Now what to do? I thought that a half-way folded aircraft on its way out or into the hangar would conceal the missfit

And finally some work on the boats:

So much for now, next part in a few days...

Hi Jan,

Looking good, very tidy etch work on the boat deck and the boats, the funnel uptakes certainly look convincing.

First class, Jan!

Those pesky walrus hey? must've been a real tight fit to get them in the hangars on the actual ship too, I'm guessing.

I do like the open structure...

The funnels with 'my' uptakes

and finally some color on the Walrus - no decals yet

For now - thanks for looking, more soon!

Hi Jan,
Love your minature Walruses!. In which of the many etch sets you are using did you get the etch for the planes. I have a Walrus for my Achilles I am building for the Battle of Atlantic campaign that would like some enhancing

cheers

Ahoy Sean, thank you very much!!

Michael, for the Walrus, I used the kit that's included in the Trumpeter Repulse kit and the PE from the WEM set. Good thing is, both - the Trumpi planes and the WEM etch - are available separately. You can get a box of four, I believe, of the Walrusses and a tiny etch to support a couple of the planes, they offer it on their WEM Hompage.
The planes are not perfect, I almost liked the Tamiya ones, that were included in the PoW kit, better but they are ok when you use some etch, but some filling and sanding is needed.
The etch I partly abused to produce the folded wings - I did not use the stanchions provided for the floating devices under the wings, that was to tiny for little effect to me - but this very parts I turned around and used them to attache the cut off wings. They proofed flexible/bendable enough so that I could easily adjust the angle of the wings quite considerably without doing any damage
Thanks for your comments! I like your Achilles project very much, something out of the ordinary, never seen this kit or one of this cruisers built, I'm following you but normally don't post there as I am not participating in the campaign

Cheers,
Jan

Hi Frederick,

thank you very much, I feel truly honored!! That's very generous!

Now let's continue a little - this time the single 4" HA need some work. As Si already pointed out for his destroyer, there is not all that much after marked equipment around those guns (yet). For my guns, the base was the plastic parts from the kit, Master barrels and some leftover-etch from an earlier project...

Here the kits part to start with, lefthand side already stripped down to the parts needed

Breeches deprived of their barrels

and the difference that the Master barrel makes:

Splinter shields from the PomPoms served as the replaced 'steps' around the gone

Some more 'stolen' parts make it look like this:

Even if not perfect, I think it's a nice improvement over the original molded guns...

Provisionally installed on the after superstructure

And finally painted in 507 A

So much for today, thanks for looking in and the next update should be there in a few days!

Very nice work Jan,

Especially like what you did with the 4", those open mounts really do need a bit help, and few of the upgrade sets look after them well.

Making notes for when I get round to mine.

Cheers, Si

Thank you Si! And again I apologize for some days of sloppiness, just a few pictures of the general progress and tomorrow I should find some time for a more extensive update I hope...

Now here is the forward superstructure developing, first details like cutters installed...

...of course the highest deck is only dry-fitted so far.
More soon!

It is really immaculate work Jan. Genuine museum quality. Skip any weathering, this is too good to "blur" the effect.

Julian,
thank you for this - too much praise If you know where to look you'll find your fair share of little mishaps...and quite some steps more to go, many of them with the potential to spoil things if they go wrong. But I'm seriously considering your advice to skip the weathering. She's going to sail beside my 1941 HMS Prince of Wales where I applied some 'soft' weathering, not at least to cover some smaller glitches...

Michael,
your copying the 4" will be an honor for me , should you need some more details or pics let me know, I am more than happy to provide whatever I can!
You are doing a great job on your Achilles over on the campaign, I really like your work!!

I really appreciate your support and comments!!

All right, lets get on with a brief update, I'll keep it brief despite some considerable effort because I showed this before in my earlier abandoned threat - it's about the triple 4" mounts.

Again, wild combination: some kit's parts, Master barrels, and a mixture from WEM (golden etch) and Eduard (metal color etch).

That's how it would look OOB - not all that bad, but...

The used parts:

Stripping the kit...

Barrels added:

replaced gun carriage

...and small stuff added:

Bending the splinter shields/housing:

And test fitting:

For now...more soon! (one of these dangerous promises...I hope I keep it this time...)

Jan
