Hey all,

Here is my submission for the Campaign.

It is Trumpeter's U/350USS North Carolina. I will also be using AM kits from GMM, WEM, Master Models Brass Barrels and a Hunter Wooden Deck.

The Trumpeter kit is set in the 1945 fit so I will be back dating it to the 1942 fit. Little bit of a challenge but I think I am ready for it. Going to be a great campaign, thanks Luciano for creating it.

Hi Luciano,

You know what's coming, as you were there when I bought it, but my entry.....

USS LAFFEY, DD459, Dragon 1/350th with the GMM fret for the Bensons, not a perfect fit, but the best I have.

As soon as I have a vacant slipway, her keel will be laid,

cheers.

Dragon 1:350 USS Laffey DD-459

Well this is going to look like your project has a twin, Si! I picked up the GMM Buchanan set to go with Dragon's Laffey kit. I don't plan to start her any time soon though, I am going to work on a water base first. That should give me time to watch other builds and get some ideas of how I may want to proceed with my first ship.

I am looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

Hi Paul,

Sounds like you are planning a waterline build, well I am going down the full hull route, so not quite twins... But close. Looking forward to seeing your approach.

Cheers.

First picture -the Box. Using a Revell issue of the UDT Demolitions boat kit, I plan to make a Landing Craft Personnel boat with Ramp (LCP(R)).

OK, not sure when I'll actually get started on it, but here are the start pics.

Box a little the worse for wear:

But the plastic is fine:

I think I am going to make a switch from the Laffey to a Tamiya Fletcher. I picked one up on Ebay w/ a GMM set included pretty cheap. Looking it over it strikes me as a far easier kit to build as my first ship. I have been working on my water base and so far I'm very happy with how it is turning out. 3 coats of gloss medium down after sculpting the swells and waves, maybe another 2 or 3 coats and then it will be ready for paint.

Just finished Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, what an excellent book. Now I really want to model some ships!

Paul,

Good choice of kits. Are you building her as the Fletcher or another ship. Regarding the book, incredible read and one he'll of a motivator for ship building. I am going to build a few dios from that book, my favorite being the Samuel B Roberts verse the Haruna. Can't wait

My entry for this campaign.

I am excited with this subject because it will be my first attempt to paint a camouflaged ship! Aside from the Gold Medal Models photoetch set, I also have a couple of references to aid with the build, as well as a masking set from Gator (the same company that made the Gator's Glue).

Thanks,

Joseph

Guy's looks like we have some nice builds in the making from you all.

Nicolas, great to have a figure here and a scratch build to boot

Michael P, not seen that kit before so I'm interested in your build.

Michael S, a P-39 in the big scale, nice!

And to all you ship guy's, looking forward to watch what you do, as for my build, there will be a slight delay while life (work) is in the way. I hope to be able to get to the bench by mid September.

Back in 2005, Kit NetWork Contributing Writer, Alan McNeilly, did a superb build of this kit in British service:

Member Taffy3 had done one, too!:

Keel on the USS Laffey is laid.

Upper and lower hulls fitted together very well indeed.

Dragon are oft criticized for over thinking / over engineering, but the this piece of design they got very right. The bulkhead at the break of the forecastle, with its watertight doors in place awaits the fitting of the decks.

The decks in place and another good fit.

More soon.

Working on my water base. My first attempt wasn't very good. I went with paper towel over my pink styrofoam but it looked awful. I think I used way too much acrylic medium when I applied the little squares of paper; I ended up with some serious wrinkles and ridges all over the surface when it dried. Likely from the medium shrinking as it dried I am thinking? Regardless of the cause, I scrapped it and started fresh.

For the second effort I skipped the paper towel and used plain white printer paper instead. I also applied a very thin layer of medium this time to glue it to the styrofoam with a second thin layer on top to seal the paper. This one came out far smoother. Four layers of acrylic medium so far and it is starting to look extremely smooth, I am thinking 2 more should do it before I paint.

So far so good, more to come soon.

Michael thanks for the links.

Paul nice start on the base.

Si, coming on nice.

Here is my entry for the campaign, it was going to be the cruiser USS Astoria but due to time constraints at work I'm having to look at something easier and quicker while the Nasty Arsty will get built in the Cruiser campaign instead of the Graf Spee.
So the victim is,

Nice choice Luciano.

A bit of progress on the USS Laffey.

Shafts and rudders on.

Started on some sub assembles, B gun deck and lower bridge,
and test fitted.

As this lady is a one colour scheme, lots of sub assemblies, and then get the windy stick out, loaded up with sea blue.

Cheers, Si.

Ok with a couple of hours before I start a set of nights I thought I'd get some paint down.

Windy stick in action again, I must be feeling ill

Basic painting done, some touch up (radio) and then detail paint. I'll nick the seat belts from one of my dual combo kits which can be replaced later.

Now to find a photo of the radio and any cables that need to be added.

Greetings!

I'll be jumping in with the USS De Haven DD-469. I'll be using the Tamiya 1/350 USS Fletcher kit with GMM photo-etch, Niko Models K-Guns, and 5", Twin 40mms, and 20mm R/S Lockers from Alliance ModelWorks.

I have a few Campaigns to finish up first, but I wanted to "check in" sooner rather than later.

Daniel

Gents,

I apologize for my absence, real life has left me with little time so I have been a silent observer over the past few weeks. Time is now available to build and comment.

Si, your USS Laffey is coming along nicely. I have her in my stash so I will be watching your build with personal interests

Luciano, nice start on you P400. Very interesting plane. Sorry to hear about the Nasty Asty but excited to see you build a plane.

Paul, your water scene is coming along nicely. Looking forward to seeing it finished

Nicolas, very impressive start on your figure. Have never seen a scratchbuilt figure so I'm interested in seeing how you progress

I did a little more work on the North Carolina. Was able to sand her down enough to get the deck to fit in the hull. Now to mount it. Will have updates for the Maya this weekend.

Builds are all looking great

Coming along Si.

Welcome Daniel, looking forward to see what you can do with the Tami Fletcher.

Dave, where's the pictures? Just kidding, I just so want to see what you do with this fine ship. Best shape of the US fast battleships in my opinion.

Some fine looking starts here! I've got the base "Bell" green on the interior parts of the 1/32 P-400:

 photo 20150906_122702_zpswmddnnsr.jpg

I'm kind of fitting this in between bouts with the Airfix Javelin for another campaign. But I'm getting decals on that one so the end is in sight!

Michael
