Luciano,

Thank you for the comments. I understand taking a break and building something different. The I19 is that for me as it is a simple build compared to the IJN Maya.

Hope to get the grey colors on her sometime this week.

Very nicely done David, it's interesting seeing how another modeller organizes the work flow on the same kit. I can't tell from your photos but did you remove the molded on steps for the conning tower ladders before you attached the etched ladders?

Cam,

Thanks, I have been watching your build myself. It is interesting to see the differences. I did remove the molded ladders before adding the PE. I am also thinking of leaving off the rear winches, not sure what they were for but I cant see them being permanently erected like that while submerged. Do you have a reference about that, where they permanently erected?

David - I found one in harbor pic on the internet that shows one of the rear cranes in the up position but none of the at sea pics I could find showed any cranes up, or the periscopes that high. I am doing my I-19 with the aircraft on deck and so will leave the cranes up. If I had to guess I would say that the rear cranes were just for taking supplies aboard.

Cam,

I finally received my copy of Osprey's IJN Submarines and you are correct. The Cranes to the rear of the conning tower on Type B1 Submarines are collapsible cranes used for supplies.

That being said I am going to leave mine off. You brought up a good point about the periscopes being so high, I may look at lowering a couple or all three, haven't decided yet.

Decision, Decisions....

Look forward to seeing more of your progress.

Hey everyone,

Well after applying the anti-fouling coat last weekend it was time to move to the paint shop.

I applied a coat of Tamiya Sasebo Grey to the I19.

After that it was staining the wooden deck. I attempted the same pattern that Michael did for his Type VII C, however I think it looks a little orange.

In any case, I used a couple washes of burnt siena oil paint, followed by a dark grey wash, and finally a little black.

Once that was done I applied the deck to the I19.

After that was dried it was time for the dockworkers to add the conning tower to the hull.

That's as far as I got. I am working on the railing and other fiddly parts, once they are painted and mounted I will cover her with a gloss coat and begin weathering.

Dave

David - I really like the staining on the deck, I might have to try that myself.

I19 is coming great Dave. The deck looks good.

On bridge roof in place.

A view from the rear, some of the detail does show.

Having given up on waiting foe the flyhawk etched strips from the orient, I have some North Star ones coming feom the Ukraine, hopefully here by the weekend.

Cheers

Cam - Thanks, I am not 100% happy with it so I might add some more stain to it. It looks a little orange to me.

Si - thanks, you Chikuma is looking good. That's a lot of Photo Etch on the back of that bridge, but as always you handle it magnificently. Looking forward to seeing it all com together.

Thanks Dave,

If the package from North Star arrives by the weekend, might be a lot more etch going down.

Cheers

Am starting my P-400. Although the box says P-39//N the box contains the parts for the P-400.

HI All,

The I19 departed Kure Arsenal and is currently conducting a patrol in the vicinity of Guadalcanal. The Captain has decided to start preparations for launching the scout plane to investigate the report of a US Aircraft Carrier and a US Battleship somewhere in the area.

I am not completely satisfied with the results of the E14Y1 Scout Plane. My first version was detected and destroyed by a crew of canine beasts which reside in the house. This one was a spare from the I58 kit. It has a molded on canopy which challenged my painting skills.

The IJN Pilot is from Northstas IJN Pilots set. Absolutely amazing detail from such a small figure. Puts the Fujimi figures I have to shame.

The Aerial Antennae started off looking quite good until my airbrush decided to stop working which required me to brush paint the aerial. That it where the paint gooped it together but since this was the third attempt I rolled with it. I did learn quite a bit with that challenge so I will remember it for the next time.

Well with that the I19 is complete. I will upload a couple of photos to the Campaign Gallery. Thanks for letting me shift plans Luciano, I appreciate it. Had a great time building my first Japanese Submarine.

Stephen nice subject, word to the wise, make sure you load that nose with as much weight as you can and then some. The P-400/39 has a nose up tail down atitude so is prone to be a tail sitter. Oh nice decal set, I got those as well

Si, good to see more progress, which is more than I can say for myself. See you at Southern Expo in a couple of weeks?

Dave that is one cool sub you got there, well finished and that wood deck just adds that final touch, figures are cool also

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the kind comments. I plan on placing her into the sea before long. I may need to wait until I complete my move but the intent is there.

Si,

Your Chikuma is coming along nicely. I know all to well the challenge of those brass strips. Keep at it and don't let it get to you. It gets a little monotonous at times.

Finally, I guess I can claim I've started.

It's a 1/72 P-400 from RS models. First kit of theirs I've ever tried.
Got a couple of the cockpit parts started. Should be fun.

A bit more progress on Chikuma,

Progress on the bridge, all the fire control fitted, just need painting.

Bridge finished.

Main turrets sprayed

Bridge fitted, blast bags on the main turrets painted, and test fitted.

Cheers.

Making a tiny bit of headway on the P-400.
Did some painting in the cockpit area; sidewalls, control panel, seat and floor. Snipped the fuselage off of the sprue and noticed the gigantic ejector pins inside the tail.

That's a spot of work to sort out.

A bit more progress today.

Took a break from the brass strips, capstans on, and anchor cables attached at one end.

Cables in place and some foredeck details on/

Foremast and searchlight platforms built, I used the Tamiya platforms and the eduard lattice structure, the etch on the foremast comes in the Tamiya kit.

The foremast fitted.

A quick overview of the build so far.

Cheers

Very quick update.

Searchlight platforms fitted.

Still plodding away with the brass strips, getting to really tricky bits.

Cheers
