Finally got around to putting down some paint and while the paint dried I had a go at the Holland class and Resurgam all three in 1/144. Although I could of entered the Holland and Resurgam in the campaign I forgot to take before photos so they appear only as this is what I'm building along with the Typ II.
Resurgam is in black satin primer, finish will be black metal work and wood.
Holland part built still needs fine detail, screw and periscopes.

Nice trio Luciano.

Your type II looks very good indeed, as do the two oddities.

cheers

Hi Everybody
I'm calling this one done. The initial build was quick and easy and the initial painting went okay. But when I started to give the sub a wash, clumsy me started to break things off. First was half of a forward wing (not sure what to call it, it wasn't the dive plane). Broke that part off 3 times and then I broke the periscope in half ( has a slight bend to it now). Tried a light weathering with some rust showing. Think I over did it a bit but I don't think the pictures show it.

Its been fun and I might try my hand at another one. Some awesome builds going on, can't wait to see some more being completed.

Just saw this one (don't come the way of the Swabbies too often ).

Sometime back I picked up this little kit from one of the FB forums. I liked it because I didn't have anything from this company, this size, or this delicate (the PE is tiny!).

Photos and basic start this morning:

The hull consists of two halves and the deck. ALL of the PE in this kit is optional. The last page of the instructions covers the PE placement otherwise through the three steps its only the styrene part.

The plastic deck has two protrusions that I'll need to remove before the PE deck goes on - those two parts will need to be transferred then to the PE.

Waiting for the glue to cure before I clean up the seam and drill out the holes in the hull sides.

Some more on the little sub:

PE deck on and the two pieces of the from the styrene deck transferred. Rudder parts added and the conning tower started.

So, I did some digging around and yes, it appears to be the same sprues (three), however the Mirage kit has no PE(?).

A bit more work this evening. Conning tower on (the gap will be filled with thin CA(?). The prop shafts are brass rod; the styrene ones were not the same length.

Oh my...the rails. Thinnest PE I'll have ever worked with. #11 (for the conning tower) is broken - I hope I can fix it.

Ahoi Mates!

Time for me to join the fray with my SS-1 U.S.S. Holland, the first submarine in US naval Service. It is in 1:72 scale, I will try to place a figure with it to better see the size of that ship. Compared to my finished Typ IIA of the same scale it looks ridiculous tiny :-)

It is a multimedia kit out of resin, one photoetched platine and some thin brass Barrels. Iīve bought it directly from Iron Shiprwights during a Special sale as I find this tiny boat very attractive.

I do plan to place it surfaced at an water diorame out of colored Crystal clear epoxy. Well, I never did this before but I want to try it out now. Wish me luck...

and this is what is inside exactly

flank speed ahead!

Cheers

Hi there!

Here is my weekly update of my SS-1 U.S.S. Holland build:
After having a closer look at the provided resin parts within the kit my enthusiasm considerably dropped as the quality of the parts is mediocre. The casting of many parts is just bad and warped, some parts are additionally broken and for some parts I dont find how to place inside the construction manual. But at least the boatīs hull is of very good Quality (just at the bottom side are some bubbles but no one will see them later).

I wanted to install the flood vents first but, as I told before, because of the unusuable quality I was forced to build them scratch out of styrene exept the one for the main hatch. What I need to do next here is to put putty inside the recesses and sanding the surfaces after.

The main hatch was molded closed but I did want to show it open together with a sailor lurking out to have a better size comparison. I did found an (hopefully) appropriate sailor with binoculars which will do the Job. the hatch inside was detailed as far as my skills did allowed it.

I also did ordered a base for it at the Carpenter which should be finished around the end of next week.

Thats it with the weekly Progress of my little project. Following are some pictures for you

Cheers

Ahoi!

Small update: I installed the topside photoetched floodvents and sanded down everything to get a smooth Surface. The first two frontal etched floodvents were not installed because of the missing engravings at the resin hull... Instead I used the etched parts as a mask and drilled everything by Hand

Cheers!

Ok my short construction is finished now. Part numbers was absolutely manageable even if I had to make some parts out of scratch by myself.

It seems that some details were changed frequently at the boat because almost every picture of the real one Show it with different small changes. I kept myself with the trustable construction Manual

side- and diverudders with their separat steerings

completed boat

Next step is applying the primer!

One question to the experts: What would be the appropriate gray color shade for the upper hull? Vallejo would be nice as I have a lot different from them. Thanks ahead for your help already!

Cheers

Holland is looking great Thomas.

The figure really gives it scale.

Hi All,

I have shelved my build for the last few months due to many, many frustrations with doing some of the modifications I wanted. Sometimes things never come out the way you really want. (go figure) Just some typical modeling angst I guess.

But now that we are down to 2 months, I think I need to get back to it and just say what the heck, and complete it whether I 100% like it or not.

Hopefully next week when I get back from Biz trip I will start up on it again.

Simon and Jeff thanks a lot for your encouraging comments on my build; I will keep trying my best at it.

Today I was able to spray the boats bow in black, nothing exiting:

As the boatīs paint dried up I finished the spotting sailor with acrylics and, if you consider the size of the figur and my miniscule figur painting skills (did not more than about 15 or so), Iīm very pleased with the results so far:

I hope I will get my base for the boat from the carpenter tomorrow

Cheers

Hi,

I call my SS-1 Holland itself finished. I did apply a Panel wash and some decent rust with oil Colors. After this treadment I installed the sailor and made the rigging with Uschi van der Rostens 0,3 mm Lycra thread. The US Flag was done out of a whine bottles lead shaped in form and decals from Verlinden.

finally I couldnīt resist to show a small size comparison: I placed the boat in front of my Type IIA U-Boot (which was already a small submarine) with the same scale to show how tiny the Holland was. Unbelieveble how 8 men did fit inside the hull.

Unfortunately I didnīt get my base from the Carpenter in time. But he promised me I will get it next monday. When I have it I will try to cast the resin water around it to Show it steaming surfaced at full speed.

Great looking boat there Thomas!
I know what an effort it is to make something out of an Iron Shipwrights kit having been there myself so well done for persevering with the build.

cheers
