Cool, Al it seems like you can start a second (third?) career as an interior decorator
Nice carpet -don't forget the ashtrays and the paper sheets here and there near the desk, a bit of coal and a shovel near the heater .. what can I think about more?
uh yes, I can remind that the posters hanging on British walls become waterlogged really very fast, so maybe some weathering on Churchill's face
Great work, I can't believe I will have the time to do 3 of my own dioramas while you're still on your first very huge floor

Morning JBA,

How's the young one, not giving you too many sleeples nights I hope.

Thanks for the feedback. Paul organised me some great posters, one or two will probably be fine, but I don't want to over do it. I'll weather them in a bit when I decide what's best to use and where to place them..

I have maps/charts and documents that will be around the radio area. A small shovel and a poker will be needed for the fire and some ash underneath.

It's more likely that you will build 20 or 30 small dios by the time I get this one done but that's half the fun, anyway I still need experience in developing techniques and skills and working with a lot more materials so there's no hurry, I'll just keep plugging away until it gets done.

Working on the No 19 Radio at the moment, a Formations one, which is a neat little kit. Have to go and look up some references but I hope to get it done and installed onto the table today.

I have some books and might make a small shelf or two to hold them.

What are you up to at the moment. I lost track of stuff as my PC crashed and it took weeks to get it fixed, a long story .

Enjoy the rest of the weekend. I have a few days holidays next week so I'm looking forward to a short break.

Cheers

hey Al I just saw the post with your tiny radio on it, it really looks very cool and detailed -the only thing I can see with spending so much time on a single project is that you might want to hide the early stuff in some corner of the diorama because what you will end up with last will be better mounted/painted etc etc!

For the rest, nay, baby doesn't sleep much I have a SBS on my latest dio out soon on HForma, and there are some posts at MSW about some scratchbuilt naval guns
keep us posted!!

Hi jba,

No worries. My stuff always gets re-visited, what I have at the moment is the basic main kits being built. They can be changed /upgraded if necessary, although I pretty happy with the overall standard and the trucks will look different once the loads and crews are sorted out properly.

I doubt the boats will see much change although their is always the possibility of changing crew figures as other options become available.

When I get a moment I'll track down your latest projects. Picture framing/map hanging and sorting out the wee small details to see how things look.

The formations N0 19 set is a real good kit. Just needs a touch up hear and there and a couple of connections to figure out lol, lol.

Have fun and enjoy what's left of the weekend.

Hi Guys,

Yesterdays progress:

some updates, changes and thoughts.

Some additions so far, have added 3 pictures, a kettle and pot, bucket of coal and coal shovel, 3 boxes and an oil lamp to the stove area. I have sooted the area above the stove.

In the Radio section, have added a large pot 'spitoon' maps and documents and a haversack hung on the chair. On the main wall between the two rooms I have added a sea chart.

I have decided do remove the telescope as the stand was too large for the area but have reworked it in a different fashion for the Observation Deck and used the legs to make observation binos.

I have included a couple of shots of the work done so far on the Fisherman's Hut, but that has a ways to go yet, shutters, glass and some internal and external fishy things are needed there.

Still can't think what's best for the round wall. It looks odd without the clock (sorry Glenn I ruined it in the wall plastering) so perhaps I should replace that first. I've made some more haversacks to hang on a hat stand I'm attempting to make.

The Pin Up Girls look really great, I wonder if Paul might enlarge them!!!!!

Rest Area

Radio Room

Fisherman's Hut

Still lots to do on this one:

New Telescope stand and Observation Binos

Cheers

It's really shaping up Alan. I can hear Edward R. Murrow and Glenn Miller coming over the radio and talk of rationing.

Hi Kenny,

- nice one. Glad you're enjoying this. I notice the first officer has stoped contributing to the thread, people can be very strange don't you think!

Anyway, the hat stand is drying as I type, looking glasses are done and some books are almost complete. This will leave the rounded wall for which I'll have to find a replacement clock. Some chart/map boards leaning against the wall might be the best way to deal with that bit.

I need a couple of tea mugs around the place and maybe a bottle of milk and a couipe of wine bottles.

Post some pics later when things are dry. I have a few days off work which is great.

Thanks for your continued support.

Last of the updates for today.

Books

This is the last of the updates for today. I've added 6 books. Somewhere in a box form a past life I should have one or two of the old Tamiya newspapers. When I track them down, I'll cut out some text and paste it onto the white pages.

If I add the clock again, a few boxes, magazines and tea mugs apart from the headphones that might just about do. Figures I'm undecided upon yet; perhaps a chap at the radio or a couple of officer types and a clerk if I can find suitable poses. The 2 Resicast figs I used for scale woudl do if I changed their head gear, I'll see nearer the finish time.

Been a fun two days.

Cheers

Hi Alan,

Really sorry that I missed this thread... will explain in your "other" thread

To be honest... I'm quite flabbergasted (sp?).

I really like the newer layout - the one you showed yesterday or Monday? - of the radio room.... IMHO the telescope really limited the flow of the room.

I really love all those little details.

Hi Rudi,

Thanks for the reply. I thought a telescope would be cool and a watery think, but I couldn't make it work in the space, just looked odd.

Thinking on the layout for a few days now I should place a bottle or something on 1 or 2 of the window ledges.

My main stumbling block is the rounded wall, not quite sure how to finish that off yet.

On the windows I'll need to show them protected against blast, cross taped. Anyone got any thoughts on how I might best do this? I'll try some masking tape, cut into thin strips

More experiments.

Thanks for the feedback. No worries on the posting thing. It can be a lonely like at sea

Taped windows to follow later!!!

Cheers

Hi Al, hope the morning is being nice with you,
no tape for the windows, could be too thick and on some light angles could look weird at the place where you cut it, I would suggest some paper tissue, like when you have got a cold, one of the strips with glue on it, that's the only material i can think who could be thin enough..

Hi jba,

I've tried a bit of tape, this is the result!!!! Reluctant to start to glue anything onto them at this point as a cock up is a definate possibility. This looks a bit broad, don't know if they could be painted on wth any accuracy or I could get the strips narrower!!

AlanL,

Forgive me for being a newbie at all this but.......were windows protected in this way during the war? Also I having trouble seeing your diorama as a whole because I have seen the great lighthouse, the people, and the vehicles but how will they all fit together? I hope I didn't miss an earlier explanation, just curious, I think what you’re doing is fantastic but I want to see the whole diorama (I know I need more patience).

As nice as the light house is Alan, it's all the little personal details you are adding that's bringing it to life.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for that, you might have saved me a lot of unnecessary work. I have that image in my head from somewhere!!! However, I've just had a look through Images of WW II which is a collectionm of pics form the Daily Mail mainly of War time London and I have to say I can't see a protected windoy anywhere lol, lol. Thanks that would be one less thing to do.

re the layout of the dio, it's been on going in a variety of posts for some time but here a coule of shots of the layout. You need to imagine the harbour which will be about 8" in hight with the building, trucks etc above the boats. It will be low water with the boats below the harbour wall, if that makes sense.

Overview from the harbour entrance

Top end of harbour with LH

Trucks on the sea wall

Top odf the pier, goods area

There's about 20 pics on site, I'll see if I can find the original link.

AlanL,
All I can say is WOW! Thats going to be a huge dio, I was wondering if you have a way to disconnect some of the dio to make trasportation easier? Mainly I say this because you have to get it to the shows after you complete your work because you have to show it, right?

And thanks for posting the pics again, I can see how everything will be going together a bit better now.

Ahhh, taping the windows, getting ready for a hurricane....errr, I mean air raid. Nice touch.

Frank, windows were taped to keep the glass in larger pieces if it broke.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the input. I've had a re-think on the windows from what Frank said and the pics of war time London I've just been looking at and I think the answer is to compromise, tape one ot two with a much thinner band and leave the rest as clear. The other option they might have used is brown paper taped over them!.

Thanks guys I'll think on it.

Frank long way form show time yet, and that would depend on whether or not it turns out good enough. Showing stuff isn't something I've ever done and not sure it's for me, perhaps something to think about for the future, have to get it built first

Cheers

Gator,

I was just wondering if it was a common thing to tape the windows in ww2. What is a hurricane any ways? Is that a rain storm don't see that kind of stuff in the great lakes area. I know when I was down in your area, a rain storm was more like having water pored on you...LOL

Hi Kenny,

I thought it would look right. This effort is too think and after the conersations I might go for a compromise?

Cheers
