Hello all,
It looks like there is a lot of ships that are needed to be dry-docked, I hope that the shipwrights can handle all of the work.
Great work done so far and thanks for the photo's and updates.
Cheers,
Bruce

Hi Bruce!

Just stumbeled over this campaign, always thought it had something to do with displaying ships in the drydock...

I have the perfect project going on for this, a Tamiya 1/350 Fletcher with GMM fittings. I first started it probably 10 years ago and restarted it mid June of this year so that would fit the time frame. Only problem is that I don't have any pics of before the restart, only as of yesterday before I slapped on a coat of hull red to the underside. Can I enter anyway? Can I, can I, can I?

Cheers!
Stefan

Hello Stefan,
Sorry about the late reply. Your build is allowed.
I informed Mark (Gunny) that I would be away from the site for awhile, Miss Mary (My Cousin) went in hospital with 3 massive infections about 2-3 weeks ago. She was there for 7 days including 4 days in the ICU so I was there the entire time. After her release I have been taking her to different Docs for further medical help. That has been for the last week or so. She is now doing better and I am back on the site as much as I can.
Thanks for the photo's and the updates,
Cheers,
Bruce

Thanks for having me! Glad to hear your cousin is doing better.

So this will be my first posting on MSW, I hope to learn a few tricks. First question: what is the best/usual/recommended building/painting sequence? Right now I'm working in components (most of the stuf above the main deck isn't glued yet) and will have to hand paint quite a few things, including the main reling which I'm planning to add after painting. The deck is giving me a headache already... Next I will probably airbrush the sides in the dark camo color and then mask the pattern with cut outs from the build plan (which Tamiya kindly provided in 1/350 scale...) Would appreciate any tips!

Cheers!

Hello Stefan,
Most ship builders build in sub assemblies, paint them then attach them together on the ship.
for your deck mask off what is not to be painted and then use a deck tan or deck wood paint. some of the are a little dark, so you can add a little white to lighten them up. I have been playing with using deck wood for A/C lighten up with white in areas that would have a lot of foot traffic and darker near the superstucture and edges of the ships. so far it looks not bad but I think I can get a better look as I try other shades of colors.
HTH,
Cheers,
Bruce

After a bit of break, a small amount of progress on the HMS Hesperus,

20mm added to the bridgewings & 1 of the two quad 0.5",plus a start on the depth charge throwers. torpedo tubes and platform for 3" gun scratchbuilt added (I did use the etched supports from the WEM G/H class fret)

Maya is finished. Once I find the wayward USB cable, I'll post some pictures.

Some small progress on HMS Hesperus over the weekend. the port side now has all the throwers added and their depth charges. Also in the process of Modifying a L'Arsenal 3"/50 to look more like a Britsh 3", I appreciate this will not be torally accurate, but it will look something like it. The Biggest Issue I am having at the moment is the 24 ready use depth charges. What is included in the Kit are just T shapes, and some poorly formed. I can scratchbuild them, adding some Arbor detail, I am tempted to put this on hold & get on with HMS Bentink, (Captain class Frigate) using the GMM set and seeing how many etched arbor plates I have left, and maybe show her low on depth charges.

anyway, progress in photo form

nice update Simon; I appreciate the detail you go in your build blog, very useful and informative.

I am a relative hobby-returnee, having come back to the hobby almost couple years ago. The PT boat was my first entry into a campaing; the USS Kidd was my MSW Community contest build, the Nimitz was the Hollywood theme campaign; the Adams was the Cold War Tin cans entry. As you can see, I did not finish them (well, Nimitz was finished and posted, then got damaged). I had a shelf above my work bench, which came loose and came crashing down on the Nimitz and Kidd. I had to do some preliminary repairs and will complete the Adams and Kidd as part of this campaign.

Here is my “Dry Dock” (I keep the partial builds wrapped in bubble wrap):

Wife bought this piece of furniture at a flea market, old fashion “roller desk”, works great as a reinforced closed dry dock!:

Keeps the build dust-free and away from “bumping” accidents and rogue falling shelves.

Finally, we have the Adams, saved in a Tupperware container:

I will probably start with the Kidd first…. I have already fixed the radar masts that got destroyed when the shelf fell. I will have to use whatever electronic sensors I have left, so the build will not be 100% accurate. I also need to fix the helo. Since the MSW community build was OOB, I will keep the same “rules” for this build and will only fix the stuff that broke without adding any scratchbuilt extras.

Thank you for your kind comments James.

Good Idea, the bubble wrap, my dry dock shelve does tend to suffer from the dust problem.

looking forward to seeing some more updates.

Not likely to get much done this weekend, off to "Navy Days" at Portsmouth, HMS Daring & HMS Dauntless, our new type 45 destroyers will be on display, so should be interesting.

Hi Guys,
Got back into model building back in February and started this Opel Blitz in March. The Rules and Reg section stated any model and Im sure some of these trucks were at a dock somewhere in Europe. So I thought this would qualify for this Campaign. Its been sitting like this on my work bench since April, for a couple of reasons, the main 1 being that I had surgery on my leg in May and haven't been able to get down the stairs(been working at a makeshift bench in the kitchen).
Photobucket
It was sprayed with Rattle can paint but it turned out terrible so it can use some improvements
Photobucket
I have been stealing the Jerry cans and barrels for other kits so before I have no cargo to put in the rear I think I should finish it up
If its approved I'll sigh up and get working on it

Hello Sal,
You are right about it saying any model allowed. I meant site specific, But I will allow it as I did not state water vessels only.
Thanks for joining up and start your engines, Green light.

Hi Bruce,
After making my post I went back and read through the whole tread. I didn't realize the it was ship specific until I read the whole tread and then it was to late to edit the post. Thanks for the offer to stay but I will not join up here but thanks anyway

Some progress on Hesperus, I have reached the stage where I it is juggling what goes on in which order. As the vessel at this time had a pole foremast, I need it & its backstays in place before I put the boats on.

I have fitted out the fo'c'lse head, anchor cables, windlasses and put the foredeck railings on, added the Bridgewings, and the lower section of the foremast.

The mainmast is not a worry as it is vesigial at this stage in Hesperus's career, with a DF loop on the top, and provided on wem's G/H class fret,. The boats are alos coming from WEM's captain class frigate set, not quite 100%, but far better that ISW's which do not appear to be accurate & are poorly cast & detailed

This weekend i managed to get the foremast up and the standing rigging in place. and the somewhat vestigial mainmast up as well, altough not yet rigged.

next job, finish painting the mainmast & standing rigging, signal haliyards then boats.

Hi All,

What a great way to get me to jump start the old Uboat build. Here's the new starting point minus an inch of dust!

Originally begun as an entry for the "Camoflaged Ships" campaign, but got put on hold while I packed up everything (including the wife) and moved to Hawaii. Am now settled in and have managed to eek out some space to get back to getting some modelling done. A Tamiya 1/350 Fletcher, which will be completed as the USS O'BANNON (DD450) in the camo pattern in which she was commissioned in 1942 before being repainted prior to being deployed to the Pacific to participate in the Solomons campaign. Some Eduard PE (as much as my fat, clumsy fingers will allow) along with L'Arsenal 5"/38 mounts. If I can find a 1.1 mount, I'll add that too, if not, well, maybe the ship will just have a tarp over that mount when it comes to finishing photo time.
