I was thinking there was less as of a step-down in the larger scale as the deck is much thinner in 1/200 than it is against 1/350. You know what I am trying to say? eg, 0.5mm in 1/200 is much thinner than 0.5mm in 1/350...
Yep, get the gist. If the deck is the same thickness for 1/200 and 1/350 that could make a difference. Things show up big time in 1/200 though.
Hope you are right and I am wrong.
cheers,
Julian

Julian,
I'm finally caught up with this long build log, and your Wasp is looking great so far. As you know, I'm working on the Iwo Jima with the MK1 Wasp set, and I have a question for you. Does the MK1 set come with railings for the lower deck? THank you.
Terry
It certainly does Terry and I am currently working up courage to remove the railings I fitted using the kits parts and replace them with the Mk 1 railings. They are a lot more sexy than the plain Jane railings in the kit, (my biggest problem as a modeller: impatience

)
Cheers,

Coming on great Julian, The hanger is looking busy, will add some real depth to the finished model.
Si
Hallo Simon, not busy enough yet. I will be adding some fork-lifts and a couple of choppers. I guess this is a very busy spot on the real ships. I only hope I get the Leds to work so I can see what is going on inside

Julian, looking good. One comment on your Osprey, the two bands on the propeller blades should be more to the center (I believe they mark the center of gravity for load handling equipment to lift the individual blades). See the photo at the link here: http://www.clker.com/cliparts/c/c/9/9/1257579401687242020ayqnls.png
Regarding the decals, I used a Xerox Phaser that uses some sort of waxlike material that worked great and had no run issues. I also used an HP inkjet. I sprayed the decal sheet with a clear gloss lacquer after priniting to fix the ink. With careful handling, that works, too.
I am looking forward to seeing continued progress, the ship looks great!
Thanks for the tips Thomas, I'll try a coat of laquer instead of acryllic, ( should have thought that one through more : water based paint in water

)
I'll bear the head up for the stripes in mind when I fit the other Ospreys.
Thanks and cheers,
Julian

Julian, though not my cup of tea, I really dig your work as always. You're an inspiration! Nice work on the home made decals as well!
Cheers!
Stefan
Hi Stefan, nice to hear from you. How are things in Switzerland? Snowed in yet?
Are we going to be able to entice you back to building ships again?
Cheers,
Julian

Nope, not quite, the snow has unfortunately all but melted in the lowlands...
As for ships: I'm actually back at the Independence now thAt I have finished all else and will re-launch the build log soon. But with now two kids in the house the going is very slow... The gallery being down all the time doesn't help either...
Cheers!

Hi Scott,
I sprayed a light coat of Vallejo matt varnish over the decals. This protects the ink but went gelatinous when put in water. I have since found that liquid decal film is available to protect the ink so that will be going order soon. Was fun making the decals and working out how to get things up and running.
cheers,
Julian

Hi Julian,
So how did you solve the decal problem?
I'm about to make some of my own, but will be using a laser printer rather than an ink jet...
Thanks!
Scott

If the varnish is completely dry it should not have gone glutinous in water Julian. There is something not right there... ANyway, you have solved the problem so who cares!

You may be right, I may be crazy.

Its no big deal now Warren, I'll get some of the liquid decal film this weekend and print and coat a new batch.

Time to start building Daniel
It is nice PE to work with.
Interesting to hear your opinion on the MK 1 offering

Julian, I had only the time to compare the KA airwing PE with the WEM offering. The KA rotor blades seem to be a bit crude/gross compared to the WEM ones.

But the ship parts look nice! Hope to understand the instruction sheet, though.

Scanned images of WEM PE - WASP the ship

Images of the landing craft and airwing. The part 13 was missing from the ship fret and shipped seperately in the little bag,

Stuff looks good.

As I plan on doing the Wasp kit as ESSEX LHD2 (I served on ESSEX CVS-09), I also got the decal set from Hawk Graphics.

Interesting to see the differences between Mk 1 and WEM:
Daniel points out correctly that there is a big difference in the rotor blades suplied by the different firms.
There are a couple of items on the WEM sheets that I would have liked to have:
the jib with pulleys for the Tilly, the tow bars for the tow trucks and the masts for the LCU's. I am very content with the sheet metal MK 1 used to make the PE parts though: it can take a lot of mistreatment during the build.

Took the plunge yesterday and removed the PE rails in the well deck supplied with kit. I ran a micro brush soaked in debonder along the join and let that work in for a few minutes before gently pulling the railings off. Easy as pie
After a clean up of the join I am now in the process of fitting the Mk 1 railings. Photos to follow this weekend.

Looking good, Julian! You make me want to add LEDs to my Wasp, too...

I also know the downsides of the Trumpeter aircraft; today I spent the whole morning building, painting and pimping (with WEM PE) an MH-60S and an SH-60F.

I'm going to post some pics of the completed Freedom LCS when it's done (helos inclusive), but I can't promise anything, since I'm doing another week of military service next week.
