Very nice man cave and shipyard Jan,
I understand about lack of progress. After Telford I am will be good to get the shipyard up and running again.
Also looking forward to seeing some progress on the Hood.
Cheers mate,
Si

Ahoy Jan
Very tidy and concise workspace.
The sink is very handy indeed for cleanup etc.
Looking forward to the next update.

Hi Jan,
I too appreciate your man cave/shipyard setup - handy, and so much tidier than my own! I look forward to more Hood progress too...

Wow, just about another month past since my last entry here...

Still busy with all kinds of things. But I got everything squared away and I hope I get one small update up next weekend, at least one before Christmas and New Years standdown (aka leave)

Jep, essential supplies always handy to my right...the shelfs are stronger than they look!
One more crucial investment - after I had unboxed all my stuff and moved in, I found out that I have no suitable chair for my shipyard...not quite hard to realize, but with too much going on I kinda missed that...

So thank you all for still bearing with me and for your comments on my new workplace! I hope it will be busy soon!!

Cheers,
Jan

Dear all,
today I have something very rare and strange to show. I believe you could call it an update...

Well, not a substantial one I admit, but I wanted to get things started in 2017, and so I decided to spend at least some time at the shipyard. No chance to really get into things, to continue where I stopped will take some more time. So I started with a new subassembly, the funnels.

parts are rather clunky and especially the grid is very solid and needs some robust work. Fit is ok, but the parts simply are not clean and smooth.

So it is helpful that the funnel gets a clean shave and all parts are replaced, mainly from Eduard etch.

The grid is rather fragile, but in two parts at least you can get the 3-D bend right.

The eyes on the bands lifted and the grid prepared

And finally some test-fitting in place

That's already all...but at least one final update for 2017!
With that I wish you all Merry Christmas, happy holidays and a a happy New Year!
And once again, thanks for bearing with me and my glacier pace...2018 should see better progress!
Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,
The funnel bands and grills, though seemingly small improvements, are the sorts of details that really give depth and resonance to a ship model. So what if it takes a while? Your funnels are looking great!

Jan,
Excellent work on that funnel. I always have a hard time with the PE to make the grill at the top. I must say you nailed it perfectly.

Very nice work on the funnels Jan. And can I say, it's great to see you back at the bench mate.

Those extra details provided by Eduard really are worth the extra effort and time. Gosh they even included eyelets! Little details that really make a first class kit!

I know the satisfaction of achieving little projects! And they all help towards the build so nice work on the funnel.
Merry Xmas Jan and hope 2018 sees Hood move out the dry dock on to the shelf.
cheers

Dear all,
thank you so much for all your kind comments!! Thats really great

I am so happy for myself that I got the work at least recommenced still in the old year! Next year should see my shipyard back in full swing again - well, you all know that I'll never be the fastest one (glacier race, Russ?!? )
 )
A Merry Christmas and a happy New Year once more to you all in this dear and kind MSW community!

Dear all,
I wish you all a happy new year and all the best for 2018!!
And thank you all for following along in the new year, too!
Real life does not allow all that much modeling time, but I have a small update to show, the funnels are almost done - some touch ups, and one correction I have to come up with a good idea yet to be done. And painting.
Here are some pics:
The pipes need some extensive cleaning, this all reminds me of issues Russ had with the Prinz Eugen kit...

Pipes installed, second funnel build and all PE added. You can clearly see the main issue I have - the pipes are too short. I have to come up with some smart solution here...

And both test fitted:

So that's it for now, and I won't have much time during the next week, so I hope to have the next update ready in two weeks. My glacier has a slow start...
Thanks for looking,
Cheers,
Jan

Great to see some progress Jan,
It is disappointing when you get poor components like that, especially when they are prominent spot like.
Sure you will come up with something,
Keep up the good work mate,
Cheers

Happy New Year Jan!

Great to see some progress here too!
Those pipes! What can I say? Trumpeter! Arrgh!

I reckon your best chance is to cut them off below the bracket and cut some extruded stock to the correct length with the angle sanded on the bottom and just glue them in...

Keep chasing that glacier mate.

Thank you very much, Russ and Si!!
A quick update - I spent quite some time thinking about the piping with no smart result. In the end I did a pretty pragmatic approach, not really smart, rather fixing it somehow. Even if the gaps are clearly visible, even standing out, they are small and there is not much material needed. So I came up with the idea of cutting gun barrels from older kits that were replaced by turned brass barrels in small slices and try to fit them in. Good thing that I almost never throw modeling stuff away...
So it's mainly 6" and 5,25" barrels in small, uneven slices, glued in place with gator glue and some surfacer. After some careful sanding and touch ups it should look ok...

Then I started working on the superstructure underneath the aft funnel. Lots of sanding, fit is mediocre at best. Doors, ladders etc. sanded away for PE replacement, and some surfacer on.

Thanks for looking, I should be able to find some bench time and have an update next week!
Cheers,
Jan

Good to see some progress Jan,
Nice fix on the funnels, they will look just fine once you have some paint on.
Good luck with the vent grills.
Cheers

Good start to 2018 Jan!
I think your pipe problem is very common in styrene kits. I am surprise given the growing complexity of the aftermarket kits that those manufacturers havent looked at resin or brass replacements given they are such a prominent feature.
Your fix looks good and will no doubt be fine under some paint.
Cheers

great solution on the pipes Jan

Keep plugging away mate, all these little steps will eventually get you to the finish line!

Hi Jan,
I agree with Michael about the commonness of the problem with vent pipes on styrene kits. I don't find fixing these simple but time consuming problems to be the most engaging part of model building, but I guess it is all part of the game! Anyway, your solution works quite well, and once painted up an in place alongside all the other details no one will be the wiser!

Still alive!!

Thank you all for you kind comments and encouragement

Well, I was hoping to get some time last week - didn't happen. This week actually was planned as a weekend away, but I made it home and found some time - should find some more tomorrow.
Here are a few pictures.
Original:

after cleaning for PE

same for quite a few more...
Some structures (after funnel area) assembled

The pipes opened a little bit, I hope to get the right impression with some color

and finally - refilled the oil for the compressor and got the windy stick back to work...

Masking and grey will follow tomorrow, as will - I hope - some more progress.
Thank you all,
cheers,
Jan

Great to see Hood receiving some bench time Jan!
Those Trumpy issues are a challenge, but you're handling them very nicely!
Hope you were able to get a bit more done over the weekend!
